Maybe it just me but I felt that way when I took my son and some of his friends oul to the site of the Gunnison Massacre just a few miles west of Hinckley A stone monument is located there but the plaque has been moved to the Great Basin Museum due to vandalism If you’d like to be a little dramatic you may want to read the account of the massacre of seven men in the G unnison parly by renegade Indi ans (you can pick one up at the Chamber ofFtce) while you sit on the bank of the river Following that experience you can drive to Deseret stop to see the restoration of the Mud Fort (we also have a story about that structure) and then go on to the Great Slone Face w here you get the satisfaction of seeing not only a rock formation shaped remarkably like a face in proFtlc but also some Indian petroglyphs painted on rocks nearby The delight of Stone Face is that from the base of the hill it doesn't really resemble a face Then as you begin the climb about half way up you pause for a breath and there it is! There arc easy trails to hike up to the lop for a wonderful view for miles around You may also be surprised at the number of lizard species some of which are really colorful So for some family fun and memories or for a different kind of date try this Job Well Done Dear Editor We are writing to express our appreciation to the acting Principal and staff at Millard High Schtxil for the excellent job they did with the 1994 graduation exercises in light of the disrupting events immediately preceding the convocation We would especially express our gratitude to Mrs Baugh who gxs far beyond the call of duty in cncourag- ing her students and doing her utmost to see that each student succeeds and understands the subject matter Wc have had six of our children graduate from Millard High School in recent years Our youngest child recently graduated in 1994 and wc would like to take this opportunity to say thanks for a job well done Scott & Iris Speakman Parade Chairman Says Thanks Dear Editor Looking back on our July Fourth celebration I was quite pleased w ith the great fun enjoyed by many Local citizens and visitors alike commented on how Millard County is a great place to be on Independence Day I hope that everyone enjoyed the many activities Some commented that the water activities were loo excessive Hopefully people can understand it was in fun only As parade Chairman I am especially appreciative of all the parade participants and all who helped make the parade a success this year commend those who showed their pride by cleaning up around them after the parade and other activities You were an example to all of us A little bit of community pride goes a long way in making our area a better place to live Thanks again Evan Maxfield Delta Parade Chairman Neivcomer's Point of View By Terre To whom it may concern I have read in the Progress the last three weeks about how terrible the graduation ceremony at Millard High School went Two students were not allowed to participate in the ceremony after having done their 12 years in the education system of the Millard School District Apparently another student a couple of years ago was also not allowed to participate in the funeral like ceremony because she couldn't leave her class work at B YU to be at the practices the last week of school (finals at BYU arc over about one month before graduation at MHS) I am a graduate of Millard High School and have very enjoyable memories of my graduation When I was a senior at MHS I was told that if I didn’t attend all the practices which by the way were all held on school time I would not be allowed to participate in Students have graduation exercises always been required to be at school during school hours Missing school is called sluffing which requires punishment as prcscibcd by district policy Students must be held accountable for misconduct Being late for school is also a violation of district policy and also must be dealt with according to district policy The two students in question were late or sluffed the practices and as such were dealt with accordingly It seems to me these two students made their own decision not to participate in the ceremony Why blame the teachers and principal for the students misconduct They knew that they were required to be there Graduation is the culmination of the primary and secondary education in the Millard School District The graduation ceremony should be a memorable event I suppose it would be memorable if it were conducted in a circus like setting All the students could wear anything they wanted: jeans sneakers baseball 4 caps and any other attire that happens to be the fashion statement of the day They could sit anywhere in the auditorium that they desired They could say anything or sing anything they wanted The ceremony would be just like any assembly or other school function The thing that makes graduation a special event is the proper attire the cap and gown and the solemn manor in which the ceremony transpires For the majority of the students who graduate from Millard High School that graduation is the only graduation they will ever have It must be special and traditional in order to maintain the dignity and It uniqueness of MHS graduation would be a very chaotic situation if the students each chose w hich letter of the alphabet they wanted to walk through There are certain traditional things which serve to keep some continuity in of our ceremonies the graduation school Millard High School has always tried to give its students the best education and memories that it possibly can The teachers and administrators make extraordinary efforts to prepare our young people for life out in the world My children arc third generation graduates of Millard High School The graduation exercises at Millard High School are the nicest well organized and smooth running that I have witnessed I am proud of the fact that I graduated t from Millard Except for the minor urban ce at the end of this years ceremony MHS graduation was very well done and has made some very good memories for my MHS graduate and me Thanks to the faculty and staff of MHS for doing the things necessary to preserve the traditions of Millard High School Sincerely Phil Whatcott Class of ‘67 Smith Month Where did The Utah Press Association tells us that July is they ever get the idea that summer in Millard County could cause boredom? Now I’ve heard the complaints from some teens that there’s just not enough to do around here I’ve even been told how nothing to do tempts some otherwise good kids into causing just a little trouble All can think about is how much imagination is being wasted by the young and yes the NAT SO YOUNG may be a newcomer but some ideas hold true to an area no matter how long you’ve lived there In Millard County for example wc have swimming boating watcrjct skiing ATV events rodeos derbies libraries museums ancient volcanos historic sites the list goes on and on of residents I’m willing to bet that many the haven’t been to all the possibilities that even remotely interest them And who says we should see or go only once? But for those who aren’t the outdixtrsman type or who just want something to do to pass away an evening why not try something original and get together at one persons home or try something really rare and just stay home with your family You don’t have to stare at one another or watch TV (Although with the variety of video cassettes available that's not a bad idea) I shudder to think that those living in Millard County arc unable to seek activities that will stave off boredom and possibly promote trouble in a setting Enjoyable Memories of MHS The Millard County Chronicle Progress Chisholm Policy Attention The Millard County SherifFs Office has a policy of supplying names of all people charged with felonies or serious misdcamcn-orfrom the age of 16 to the newspaper The Chronicle Progress will publish the names Reservations for the use of the Hinckley Town Park may be made by contacting Jay Riding at Just A Thought Dear Editor When you go to see a parade do you take note of the men watching? When the flag goes by how many hats are not removed? Here and there one comes off and there seems to be an instinctive straightening of the shoulders These seem to be the older man probably It’s interesting to watch the folks watching the parade Arzee SUMMER FUN EVENTS MHS Wrestling Clinic Fillmore Arts in the Park Territorial State July Park Fillmore Men's siowpitch Reg Park Delta BC Championship Park July City JuIy 16: Barrel Racing & Pole Bending Clinic MC Fairgrounds Della in the Park 10:00 am Delta July 18: City Park DHS Football Camp July July 22: WSRA Rodeo Hinckley 7:30 pm USS Swim Meet at St George Rodeo Hinckley July Julv 33: Pioneer 2 mile Race Hinckley 8:30 am Parade Hinckley 9:30 am WSRA Rodeo Hinckley 7:30 pm Scipio Rcxico 7:30 pm Scipio Sunset View Chicago Pi Delta Brought to you by these businesses: Delta Antelope Valley RV Park Dick Turner CPA - Tolley's Carpets Delta Drug & Gifts - Mom’s Crafts & Fabrics Fillmore Steve ’s Tire & Oil DearJen Delta Droubay Chevrolet Equipment & Fillmore Millard County Credit Union I t t |
