Show Page 6 Millard County Chronicle Progress February 24 1994 Delta South Elementary Delta North Elementary In The News news Nielson honored at Legislature Production performed “The Cowboy’s Birthday Hash" was the title of a recent dramatic production performed by Delta Middle Schtxrl Performances were given at DMS in December and at the Delta North Elementary in January Left to right in the picture: Winston Snow Jed Moms Cherilyn Stubbs Sarah Christensen Marci Christofferson and JD Stanworth - nr? On Thursday 10 February 1994 Mr Eldon (Bud) Nielson was honored by the Utah Slate Legislature for his many contributions to education He was the special guest of Representative Michael Styler that day Mr Nielson reported that he enjoyed his visit to Capitol Hill very much! (It was undoubtedly a nice break from the classroom) Mr Nielson is currently a fifth grade teacher at Delta North Elementary This is his 34th year as a school teacher We have appreciated very much his many contributions to education in the West Millard area He is a very dedicated and hard working teacher He has very high expectations of his students and because of those ex pcctations his students perform very well We join with the legislature in honoring this truly great professional and w ish for him continued happiness and joy in his teaching career Margaret Murdock Murdock aids school Bud Nielson Mr Sock It Bassett and the snowball barrage To Me “Sock it to Mr Bassett” was a great success Students at Delta North Elementary donated a pair of new socks to the homeless for each snowball or wet sponge they wanted to throw at Mr Bassett In December 234 pair of socks were sent to the Utah Food Bank in Salt Lake City from Delta North students to be given to the homeless Tuesday February 15 students who donated the socks were invited to “Sock it to Mr Bassett" They played games and soaked Mr Bassett with snowballs and wet sponges DNES Busy Bees “Bec"ing of Service had a great time for themselves and helped someone else in need Mr Bassett was a stationary target and took the “socking" in goixl spirits Food for Outstanding band performance Delta Middle School Band was well acclaimed for their Valentine Day performance which featured flutists clarinets and saxophones as shown in the above pictures Students have worked very hard to achieve expertise in their performances They look forward to other programs this year Melixly Whittaker directs the DMS Band America at Tri-De- ls One of our long time residents Lina Peterson Dennison has passed away in Salt Lake Funeral services were held there with graveside and burial in Fillmore Stephanie King went through the Provo temple last week Those going with her were Sandra and Eldon Morris Chcrie Shame Rowley lone Christensen Mortenscn Kathy Morris Brenda Jones LuJcan Hales Sharon Wright of Salt Lake Jonathan and Sarah Boone and Myron Western of Provo and Aunts Elma Fraicr of Pleasant Grove and Carol Hardy of Hinckley Also attending were Jill Petersen of Salt Lake and Ward and Dorothy Killpack of Della Carol is visiting her children in the Pleasant Grove area and Doyle Steele is spending lime at the Fraicr home Beryl Hardy was hostess to the Rook Club on Thursday Guests other than members were Gcri Taylor Chris CropKelly Talbot per Diane Finlinson Valerie Mason Sharon Wright and Carol Palmer Ava Tolbert sister to Vclda Riding has rented the home of Sharon Wright Sharon has employment in Salt Lake and is living at the present with her daughter Shannon Lovell Since Sharon doesn’t plan on reluming any time stxm - Hinckley needs a reporter Please don’t let the Hinckley news go unwritten Region by Heather Jensen Historian On Tuesday February 15 the participated in their region competition at North Sanpete Many hours were spent practicing and preparing for this event The performed a routine in each of the four categories: prop military dance and novelty They received superior ratings in three of the four routines and qualified for state in the novelty division The girls would like to thank all those who went to arc now support them The looking forward to competing at state which will be held Saturday February 26 at 800 am in Cedar City LINK O puzzle below using these words from this month s GHOsPOCRIlfR mystery We gave you two letters to get started “This was an experience that I will never forget!” said committee chairman Danielle Gondcr "I loved expressing my ideas to the kids and then have them respond with enthusiasm” The Delta FFA Chapter in conjunction with both the South and North participated in the Food for America program The program sponsored by the Mobay Corporation enables students to learn about agriculture The committee goes into the school and teaches kids about agriculture production processing distribution and trade and marketing as well as food nutrition and safety the environment and careers in agriculture The committee consisted of Danielle Gondcr as chairman Briana Stcfanoff as Kirby Peterson Nathan Peter Christina Deardcn Stcfanoff Heather Nicholls Sandi Greathouse Greathouse and Andrea Stanworth As a committee we would like to thank all of the second grade classes at Another fantastic Chapter I aid that works at Delta South Elementary is Margaret Murdock Margaret grew up in Idaho where she met her husband Roland After he attended school in Logan for three years they moved to Delta so that Roland could assume the position of the Agricultural District Inspector In June they will have been here 35 years With nine children six boys and three girls ranging from 37 years of age to 6 years we are fortunate that she can find time to work at our school In recounting some of the events from her elementary school years Margaret tells us that her school did not have but went from first to Kindergarten eighth grade When she was in third grade the hot lunch program was started She recalls that it cost about 25 cents a day However to this day she and her sisters like tuna fish sandwiches lettuce and a bowl (not cup) of hot chocolate because of their menus from school lunch They held great esteem for their school principal Because they loved him so much no one wanted to do anything that might upset him She remembers the old “Dick and Jane" scries as the tool used to teach reading To this day Reading and English are her favorite subjects A list of some of her family's favorite books are: "Daddy Long Leggs" "Where the Red Fem Grows" “Anne of Green Gables" “Treasure Island" "Wizard of Oz" "Black Beauty" and the "Little House on the Prairie" series She also enjoys yard work With the wealth of experience Mrs Murdock brings to our school children each day we deem ourselves lucky to have her on our staff The average number of homeless persons on the streets and in shelters in Utah in 991 was 1 834 The average number In 1993 was 2425 both the North and South Elcmcntarics All of the kids were very cooperative and made the activities fun and exciting We hope that as well as educational while teaching the students we made the program interesting so that they will never forget the experience We would also like to thank Mr Bassett and Mr Corey for their cooperation in preparing for this event The Delta FFA Chapter is hoping to add this activity onto its annual list of events Drivers saluted The teachers of DSE want to give all of the bus drivers a mighty salute! Each day they bring our students safely and cheerfully to school only to turn around and return them home in the same manner One teacher observed that a certain bus driver had something kind to say to each student leaving the bus This brightened up the teacher's day as well Bus drivers you are doing a terrific job!
