Show W Page Millard County Chronicle 2 Progress April 1 Put on a happy face Comment in poor taste Write write write! As an Army brat I traveled with my family extensively I probably saw my grandmother less than a dozen times in my life But my mother made all her children write to her every month It seemed like such a little thing It was just a minor chore and I never thought much about it But my grandmother told me once when I was grown that in many ways she felt closer to me my brothers and sisters—even though we lived thousands of miles to some of my cousins who lived right there in town When I became a teacher I found that a good way for kids to learn how to write is for them to write And wnte and wnte and write So my students visited a retirement home made friends w ith the graying residents and bee ame pen pals w ith them Angela w as upset one day because her pen pal never once wrote her a letter When we u on our project w c knew there would be problems with pen pals w ho have poor eyesight and arthritic hands but we always got excited at the prospect of having our letters answered But Angela never did get a letter from her pen pal Ever She did however receive this note one day ‘‘My aunt recently passed away As we were cleaning out her room we found several letters on her dresser tied w ith a nbbon They had your name on them The nurse told me about your school's pen pal program My aunt was very ill and could not write back but I am told she would show your letters to all her visitors and have them read them to her over and over again I’m glad she had you as a friend" think tonight would be a good night to have my boys wnte to Grandma Dear Editor After reading the “Roily and Wells” column in the Wednesday Salt Lake Tribune and finding the quote from the Utah Farm Bureau's Banquet by their President Ken Ashby of Della we feel it is time to come forward In defense of many hard working farm families and other citizens in West Millard County we ask you to not judge all of us by the obvious pxjor taste inappropriate bias and crude comment concerning the meeting and shaking hands with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed by the Bureau's president Surely the Farm Federation can find someone more able to voice their opinion and opposition to current piolicies and practices without becoming so disgustingly insulting Dorathy P Damron Beulah P Bassett Speak the same language Dear Editor After reading the March 18 issue of the Millard County Chronicle Progress I was greatly concerned at the article entitled “County Commissioners Take Wrong Turn Job Candidates Steered to Dead End" also the balance of meeting minutes the first part of the title couldn’t be more accurate I feel the first and most important job of the Commissioners should be to represent the citizens of Millard County in a professional and responsible manner I was very disappointed in the lack of these qualities shown especially those displayed at an opicn County Commission meeting This is not the first of the problems shared at these meetings though I feel it should be the last We are all human and fallible therefore we are all capable of facing the responsibility of our errors I would hope that commissioner Baker would publicly apologize to Commissioner Moon Mr Newman and to the countywide citizens to whom he serves I am not suggesting that no one else could be partly responsible for some of the misconceptions concerning the original job description or the way the whole matter was initially handled I am suggesting that it's time to make amends to anyone directly affected and to the many citizens who are offended distraught and concerned by the behavior and professionalism shown by our elected government officials Because if you represent me you are spieaking for me and we do not spak the same language Sincerely misrepresented Lisa D Waters Offensive representation Community Calendar i Mondays CL'FS Food Bank pm 162 West 100 South Delia Every Tuesday Basic Life Skills classes pm Turning Point Delta Technical Center No Charge Every 4th T uesday Social Security Rep Delta City Offices Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Lunch at M E Bird Center for Seniors p m Lunch at Pahvant Senior Center Fillmore noon Fillmore Utah Family History Center open afternoons until 10pm Tuesday and Thursday English as a 2nd language 7 pm Delta City Library Wednesday Full Gospel Fellow ship Church biblc Study 7:30 p m The Millard County Chronicle Progress USPS Publshed every Thursday at Delta Utah 84624 by DuWiI Publishing loca'ed at 40 3X W De“a Utah Pob'ser-Edte- Susan Dutscn B Pegdg - but I'm becoming one now And I m and we are on the brink of completely convinced that our world is a destruction I’m also certain that I will see the end of human existence on this planet I hop with all my heart that I’m wrong But I don't think so I’ve gotten to the pjoinl that I don’t want to pick up a newspaper or listen to the news want to keep the horror and madness at a distance It's a dangerous attitude for a journalist to take I walk a thin line On the one hand I believe my readers deserve to know the details of the news because only the details carry emotional impact If I wnte that a man rapd a woman you can more easily discount the repjort than if I say that a man forced a woman to the gravel covered ground slaked her arms and legs and made her whispr sweet nothings into his ear as he forced himself upon her Which repiort brings the image to your mind more clearly? Which repiort disturbs you? Which repxjrt will you remember? And what specific feelings bubble up inside of you? The news is brutal If my repxjrts are loo “raw" for your taste keep in mind that what I don’t repxjrt would make most of you recoil in nausea (And I do worry now and again about the families of those I repxjrt about Probably more so than those who are the focus of my articles I wonder how much they worry about their family members while they’re engaged in whatever it is they are doing) But do you ever wonder why a lot of reporters are notorious drunks? One writer says he drinks a lot in the morning so that he’ll be drunk by noon and dead to caring about those he writes about throughout the rest of the day (Maybe most pwople drink think about because they don't know how to deal with the pieople they care about - it) I don’t drink At least not nearly enough to make me not care about those whom I write about I know how impxjrtant the news is I know that there is jjolential to change pjeople through the news process (hopfully for the better) And yet it is such a bitter uncomfortable job What is news? Nearly everything And yet there is a lot that is not news I don’t care for example who you share your bed with - or to whom you piray (As long as your bed partner is of respxmsible age and agrees) These are prsonal choices and no body’s business but your own If you piray to God Heavenly Father Earth Mother that’s of no interest to me If you want to pray to the sun in the morning and the moon at night I don’t care These are the two most intimate relationships you will have during your life time This information is not news And yet in small towns even this kind of inspction is thought of as news And it’s the worst part of small town life Voyeurism takes the place of concern pjeeping gets confused with watchful protection It's another fine line it’s a lot easier to do if you don’t get involved in the news Don’t worrybe happy If however you’re like me and believe the news is a means to educate teach inform well then I guess the first drink of the day is on me and change Here's mud in your eye! Buy a cheap novel Dear Editor: I have wanted to write for some time and express my concern for the type of journalism that frequently appears in the Chronicle I have put off writing before out of respject for the status our local papier and its personcl (sic) evidently enjoy I reasoned maybe I just don't understand what makes good journalism But after spending an hour reading the March 25 issue and in particular the front page feature article on the trial of Lester Anderson I feel compelled to write I understand that the ncwspapiers of America function on the emotional sue that the public has the right to know I agree with that right I believe there are many cases when information and truth is essential and the newspapier is an excellent source for accurate news I do not understand however the need for information included on the front page of the only newspapier in the county which is nothing more than sordid details of a trial that effected three picople the victim of hich is not a local pierson The quotes espjecially those which were admittedly considered invalid (by the girl friend of the accused) weren’t even news - they were heresay The point is we all know the men involved in this case We know their families We all know the families of Kim Taylor The details of his Not good (sic) activities were extremely offensive to me What do damaging details have to do with repxjrting the news? What about the issue of compassion for those innocent pieople involved? On another level where else but in a small town newspapier would a news item of such limited impact be given so much front page space? What does this say about not only the pioeple (sic) who chose to run such a story but those who read it? I suggest if the Millard County readership wishes to read smutty details they buy a tabloid magazine or cheap papierback novel where the characters are fictional and not picople in the community and their innocent families We need to know the results of the trails (sic) of the pieople who commit crimes in our commun ity It discourages repetition of such crimes We do not need a detailed account of what went on at the trial We don’t need to know exactly what “acts” where when and how they were committed to be formed citizens I am ashamed of the picople who print this and the public who continually read this without complaint And I wish to express my deep sympathy to the families and loved ones of those personally affected by these stories Claudia Hyde A former subscriber Richfield Utah Please direct questions or topics you would like addressed in this column to the or editor of the Chronicle Progress or to Sheriff Ed Phillips business Dear Editor: The businesses in Della say shop at home What a joke We went in a business on Delta’s Center Street We asked for an article The clerk said “It's all put away I know w hat you w ant but it's pul in a box in a comer Maybe Walker Lumber hasn't Bail What is bail? Who determines the bail amount? Why do some pieople have to pay bail and others don't? What hapipns to the bail money? Right out of Webstcrs Dictionary comes t good clear answer to the question: What is bail? “Money or credit dcpiosiled with the court to get an arrested pjerson tempiorarily released on the assurance that he will apjpar for trial etc at the pro pier time" The local courts accept cash or bail bonds but sometimes may accept cash only Bail is returned to the pjerson or company who pjosied it once the matter has been resolved in the courts Bail bond companies charge a fee for their services usually Who determines the bail amount and why do some pieople have to pay about 10 bail and others don’t? Well to begin with it should be clearly understood only the court can set bail and this occurs either directly from a judge at a bail hearing or from a bail schedule that has been prepared and apjproved by a judge For most the bail schedules are charges such as traffic citations and minor misdemeanors somewhat standard throughout the state For the more serious offenses many factors are taken into consideration by the court at the time of a bail hearing Things such as the type and seriousness of the crime charged the criminal history of the defendant whether or not the defendant has any local lies to the community whether or not any risk for further problems could be caused by the defendant the list could go on and on Depending on all factors considered the court may decide to impose a very high amount of bail or on the other end of the scale the court may allow an “OR” release which means the pierson is allowed to be released without pxisting bail They are released on their “own recognizance" Finally what happens to bail that has been posted? I mentioned earlier that bail is returned to who pjosted it once all matters have been resolved but what about when someone who is out on bail fails to show up in court when ordered to do so? The first thing that usually happjens is the county attorney requests a warrant of arrest to be issued from the court and it is usually issued Then after a priod of time if the defendant hasn’t been picked up or turned themselves in the county attorney will ask for bail for forfeiture and if cash bail was pjosted the cash is turned over to the state and county If bail was pjosted by bond then the bonding company is required to redeem their bond with cash and the cash then goes to the state and county put stuff away yet” To me that is not good business therefore I guess I will take my business and tax dollars and go up north We drive from Lynndyl to shop in Delta HaHa!
