difference between men and boy t is the price of their toys design Popular 1980s Kate Hellenhrand At last year’s ATV Jamboree the citizens of Fillmore thought they were ready for just about anything on wheels They quickly discovered that they hadn't seen it all when Jay Mannino pulled in with his outfit a brand new - 40 feet of Prevost Motor Coach gleaming stainless steel with bands of blue and purple sweeping across the sides and ending in a custom airbrush painting of a white pegasus on the back At this year's ATV Jamboree Jay and his two sons fourteen year old Christopher and twelve year old Jason were back this time pulling a Top Vine trailer filled with dune buggies ATVs and attendant gear From the reactions of the the Mannino Theatre of townfolk Transport continued to inspire wonder Mannino a scmi and businessman entrepreneur the theatre his obviously enjoys “Coach" makes He gladly offers a tour facilities to those of his brave enough to overcome their shyness "It’s my privilege" Mannino says w hen approached by yet another curious bystander It doesn’t matter that he is busy fillwater ing his 2(X) gallon system or that he’s trying to meet a deadline and needs to get back on the road he manages to find the time to sit and talk for a moment The interior of the Coach is surprisingly deluxe exceeding imagined expectations A similar Coach used commercially would hold 47 passengers but Mannino has designed his Coach to hold a seating area eating area complete kitchen and bathroom facilities and large bedrixim mirrors hide cedar lined closets and cupboards white washed oak woodwork and cabinetry ensure that all available space is usable the sofas and seats arc covered with smokey grey leather matching leather runners cover the thick nubby carpeting Polished granite countertops further the sense of opulence The lighting is defused every comer is rounded every surface shines A touch of a finger opens the doors to sound system and to a the electronic heart for the telecommunications network Three televisions are placed throughout the Coach a satellite dish rides on lop A FAX machine sits behind the driver’s scat Mannino says he is able to receive and send information via satellites (“Just like an airplane") he carries cellular and radio phones on board “I know this Coach makes a statement” says Mannino "but mine was - functionally designed" loves the desert and Mannino stresses that his Coach was put together for easy maintenance in the desert” The paint is a special type that is used on airplanes and the stainless steel withstands the sun and sand of sand favorite spots on earth dunes “I chase sand dunes" says Mannino “Fillmore is the only dirt event we do I’ve found all the sand dunes throughout the Western United States and now we go to them" Mannino and his boys have a schedule of sorts travelling to the Glamis Sand Dunes in California Coral Pink Sand Dunes the Little Sahara Sand Dunes the St Anthony Sand Dunes in Idaho - They take several months each summer to make the tours also driving up the coast of Oregon at die end of July Mannino says he makes frequent trips during the rest of the year He proudly shows off a photoof him “grabbing some air” on an ATV soaring over a sand dime on one of his - outings When the Coach isn't in use it's stored at a special garage in Manmno's California home base of Torrance Mannino is enigmatic about his business background but reveals that he a man is beginning as a mechanic the day after graduation from high school When pressed for details Mannino deftly diverts the conversation to his general business philosophy and he will say only that he’s involved in mergers and acquisitions seed capital for ventures is engaged in “passenger transport" has thousands of employees sits on boards of various corporations and is involved in teaching undergraduate courses in business at various universities "It’s foolish to be selfish in Mannino “Making money in andof itself isnot a noble goal It's the score card that counts The push to be productive" “I couldn't afford this Coach until five years ago There's nothing here that's spoonfed appreciate everything I've got If you start taking it for granted it starts being taken from you" Mannino offers sage advice: "Don't be afraid to fail Successful people have more failures than failures do" Mannino's current Coach is his fourth one and he says it is his last "I built this one to last This one has everything the others didn't I knew what I ordered everything specifiwanted cally and wailed my slot in line” The chassis is a 1990 Lc Mirage XL and delivery look eight months The interior was custom built by a boat builder and an electrical engineer The generator control panel shows the Aerospace industry influence ("The generator could light up Fillmore” says Mannino) lixiking like something out of The Space Odyssy" After “2001 another year the Coach was ready for its maiden voyage The Coach has been on the road for a vear now and has 42 (XX) miles on it "These can go 3 (XX) (XX) to 4000000 miles before they’re retired" says Mannino The Coach holds 250 gallons of diesel fuel can travel a range of 500 miles on that amount "On a gtxxl day we get six miles to the gallon" says Mannino The Coach moves easily at miles an hour but Mannino say that the Law says "you can't go above 55 mph when pulling a trailer" Jason Mannino like any kid lakes the whole thing in stride “Lotsof people have these” he says His father agrees "There is no limit to what people do with their Coaches They put chandeliers in them ornate furniture people turn these into SI (XX) (XX) to $2000000 homes” Mr George Bourcllc Vice President of Prevost says that there arc 550 members of the "Prevost Prouds" a group of entertainers stars and people who arc "very rich” They participate in rallies and other social functions and keep in touch through a newsletter “These arc people w ho have done well in life and who wish to travel leisurely and luxuriously" says Bourcllc “You can’t go to the comer store and pick one of these up” adds Mannino as he starts up the engine "But after all it’s just a motor home" - - - Celebrate the
