One program featured Wayne and Board of Health to meet Economic Development: Another Approach In considering the range of economic development options facing any comYet it is a highly munity one often overlooked strategy is historic preservation successful development tool that has a history of success unrivaled by most other techniques The reason it is usually passed over as an economic development In strategy is that it is not considered “fast track" or “contemporarily stylish” the field of economic development fitness historic preservation is the aerobic of economic development developing a healthy economy with slow base building economics The primary emphasis in historic preservation development is the celebration of local history the one aspect that truly makes one community and one the region different from another It is ironic how communities strive to import latest design fads from other parts of the country to make themselves seem unique when the one aspect that truly sets them apart from anyone else is always right at home Travelers from all regions of the country are pretty much like ourselves not interested in seeing another community’s variation on a theme mall but rather that aspect which makes that community unique: for example its history its local sense of self Recognizing this collective experience and turning it into money is what historic preservation development is all about These abstract expressions of local place reside in each histone building Not even Disneyland’s Main Street can be as authentic as your own Establishing an economic development strategy on historic preservation creates local pnde local jobs and a quality of life that is a part of the community already not a “new" image that is developed by consultants from the outside Cities who have built a solid economy on historic preservation development have done so while restonng their historic buildings creating a design sense of the development of a quality pride and respect from the citizens and through environment attracting other businesses to relocate The three main ingredients in historic preservation are: main street development and the restoration and reuse of a community’s historic buildings Each of these elements works in concert with the others For example as the Main Street commercial area prospers it affects and strengthens the historic residential areas as well as increasing the number of visitors coming from outside the area Does Your Heart Good American Heart Association ft It has been announced by Commissioner Robert Bessey of
