Our arc is really fairly new historically speaking a settlements go m Utah Several communities in West Millard date from the such as Oak City Leamington Oasis Deseret and Hinckley Delta incorporated in 191 after 2 or 3 years preliminary settlement is really the new kid on the block except for Lynndyl which dates from 194 with more growth after 1915 from the railroad The wonderful old homes seen in central rural Utah are not to be found in Delta In the older surrounding Millard communities there are some and they should be treasured and preserved Delta however has very few significant buildings which remain from its initial construction phase There are the N S Bishop house the Avery Bishop house the Edward Bunker house (Kousin's Floral now) all before 1912 And there arc others to be sure bu il t before the depression years A great number of houses were moved in to Della from the outlying farms which failed then Many many houses were moved in from the North and south tracts as the farms were lost and the original owner sold out or went bankrupt and the properties were sold for back taxes A lot of Delta architecture consists of a of put together structures Many started from the cheapest manner of construction and then were over the years Other house resulted from one house being moved in then later another would be bought moved in and added on to that to make more room As m most communities there have been a few nice well built homes all along but in Delta it seems there were fewer Second Wes running south from the stop light by the Chevron was known early on as “Silk Stocking Row" It was a much desired street on which to own your home in the late 9 30' s Most of those houses were built from scratch not moved in Here and there throughout town there is an occasional house that Liberty -A obviously was constructed as a home and not a fixed up The point of all this is that the architecture can tell a good deal about the history of an area Ours tells of the late start Delta had the economic hard times that plagued it m the early years and also displays the boom and bust periods The boom periods reflect first good seed crops plenty of water no blight or sects Then another year would be so bad that crops would not produce From the period just after WWI when the Sugar Factory was built there was some prosperity until the when the Sugar Factory was shut down After the WWII there was some success in mining which permitted some nice homes to be built Still later when beryllium was discovered and Brushwellman came to West Millard more good homes were built as in the first Pendray subdivision Still later with the advent of IPP several other subdivisions were added which gave new areas and many nice homes to the community Over the years some of the first little houses became vacant Left unoccupied they slowly lost windows doors roofs and porches Sometimes the fire department has burned them for practice so that they wouldn't be a hazard Many times homes were taken down to make way for some new structure or remodeled so extensively that their original design is no longer discernible Some of the uniqueness of Delta's history is found in the story of these move on house and certainly in the occasional well built first commercial houses and downtown buildings As years go by more of the little houses will be taken down as they fall into disrepair With the Reconnaissance survey (see other story) there will be a good record of their existence some photos and if they qualify a little history That will be all that remains of them and that era in Delta’s growth Musical Celebration of Freedom Special this year for the Della City Fourth of July Celebration the West Millard Cultural Council is presenting an extraordinary musical over the past 13 years photo courtesy of Lowder Two good looking American boys about 20 years of age all dressed in business suites white shirts and ties knocked on the door of the home of a lovely lady in the small German village of Wendlingen (near Stuttgart) They asked if she might have a room they could rent LD S missionaries had approached Kathe Stumer previously and she was known to be of a good disposiuon As a young child she had seen the devastation that war brings the heartbreak of families and the hatred that can come between countries Kathe talked with the two young elders at great length explaining why she wouldn ’t h ave room in her big house for them True the house was large but had been built for just one family one kitchen one bath But as Kathe Stumer talked she was thinking back in lime to World War II when her parents had lived in just a few of those rooms and had taken m refugees to fill up the rest of their home Following the war both parents had died and Kathe was left alone with the memories of peace and safety their home had brought to so many people Slowly Kathe responded to the missionaries need with an answer of "no” qualified with "Let’s all think about it for a day or two and then you come back and we'll sec what's best” Elders Brad Lowdcr and Warren Clark knew they had found a place to live in the village where they both needed to be This was in 1978 Kathe took her responsibilities to heart and fixed hot cereal for her “sons” each morning before she caught the train to take her to the city where she worked In the evening when the young men came in after a busy day of tracing and teaching she would have some warm food for them On one night a week when members of the LD S Church have their traditional Family Home Evenings the Elders and Kathe celebrated with home movies or stones or games and refreshments The Elders completed theirmissions and returned to the United States Over the years Mission Presidents were calling at the Stumer home to ask if Kathe could house an extra Elder or two tcmporanly And on occasion they asked for permission to hold zone conferences there The npples of love were beginning to spread across the Atlantic Ocean to the shores of North Amenca As each Elder Kathe's home the Mission President would call and ask if he could send another fine young man to take their place To date Kathe has lost track of the numbers “I think it is at about 90” she said not long ago I’m the mother of one of those two Elders who first appeared on her doorstep 3 years ago looking for a place to live Our son’s letters home were filled with love for his new mother My first letter was one of appreciation to Kathe for her many kindnesses to our son She responded in beautiful English but had written in the old German script which was difficult for me to read In the next letter I asked her if she would mind Executyping By profession she is an tive Secretary so soon we were sharing our lives with each other across these many miles At the end of 2 years our son had returned home and with him he brought dirndl handmade to my a beautiful measurements a gift from Kathe to her new sister in American We needed
