school “The whole purpose of the blood drive is to gel credit for units of blood so that if a student needs blood he won’t have to buy it" said Mr Judd college physiology teacher and coordinator of the blood drive “I thought we had a really good turnout Approximately 120 people tried which was probably 60 of those were eligible” said Mr Judd “The class took about a week to set it all up Then we were involved by weighing and marking units" said Mr Judd “We all did different things” said Vickie Butterfield class member “Marc Jensen and I were m charge of finding out who was eligible and giving them permission slips Dan Corey and Chris Bloomfield pul together the skit and stuff like that We helped that day by labelling the blood and putting it in the r ghl cooler It was neat because I just thought that this could save somebody’s life someday" Some students said they were dizzy or faint after giving blood Carol an IHC blood service employee said that 90 of students reactions were psychological “This is a new experience for the kids so it’s more intense than at the adult blood dnve It requires more on our part to calm them down and help them through it But I think they're great to do this It’s a gift of love” People in need of blood don’t actually buy the units of blood they just pay for the processing which can be expensive said Valeene Johnson who is the blood bank supervisor at Utah Valley Hospital in blood drive “The blood goes through a lot of testing Wc have to lest for seven infectious diseases Then wehave tomatch thebloodof the donor with the blood of the patient to make sure it is compatible It runs around SUM) per unit" said Johnson According to Glen an IHC employ ee the inters icw conducted before the blood is drawn is the most important part “Everyone has to be screened carefully for two reasons One for the person receiving the blood to make sure that they aren’t getting rotten blood and two for the person donating the blood It is dangerous to donate if for example you arc pregnant or have a heart problem” The time it look to give blood ranged from around ten to forty five minutes and there was also different levels of blood amounts that students gave "It took me fifteen minutes to gtveone pint and two vials of blood" said Joy Gardner a junior who didn't think the experience of giving blood was very bad at all Marleah Anderson on the other hand had a not time giving blood “I started bawling after they pneked my finger By the time they were done getting blood was so tense that I didn't want to let go of the towel They had to have a guy come and hold my arm When they pulled the needle out blood squirted evedidn't even know it until they rywhere kept apologizing to me and started wiplooked down and there was ing my leg all over blood my pants" The blood drive was successful overall and Mr Judd plans to continue it next a “It's worthy cause and a lot of fun year The donors were really brave and it took a lot of guts to do it" Delta North in the News (tt It Vd h faLif ty I A Preschoolers learn about their bodies If you were to ask a student in Mrs Hcnne’s and Mrs Hosteller’s preschool class where their
