Ann Marie Mankm Deb Anderson Juliene Withers Sherry Alley and RaeEllen Hare DNES salutes Special Education During the week of January 14 1991 the Special Education programs of the Millard School District were assessed During the debnefing of this assessment the Special Education programs of Delta North Elementary were recognized for their excellence DNES educators were commended for development of their spelling program This program involves the student m writing the word reading the word and spelling the word After successful completion of this drill students are rewardedfortheirefforts throug h s tudy mg spelling on the computer Delta North Special Educators are strong advocates of the approach to learning They have spent many long houT preparing programs to help their students A program permits students to learn cording to their strengths It also serves to build particular areas of weakness in a child's learning process The leadership of our Special Education Department has stimulated greater for students learning opportunities throughout the school district We thank this dedicated team of professionals for their continued commitment to excellence in education Sarah Henke and Aaron Anderson promote Hope Chest DMS Hope Chest Student Class Representatives and other leaders at Delta Middle School are encouraging donations to help families of military personnel Dr Eleanor Dalton principal said "We want to show our support Many servicemen have been called from here and their families may wait 4 6 weeks for a pay check” Students and faculty are helping to show their patriotism by their contributions of everything from pennies and dimes to dollars “Ours is called a ‘Hope Chest’” said Mrs Dalton “We want to help our people endure" When the “Hope Chest" is full it ill be taken to the Fust Security Bank in Delta where the fund has been established Sarah Henke sixth grade is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Norman Henke Deseret Aaron Anderson is the son of Mr and Mrs Mike AndersonOak City They lilccother student representatives and officers at Delta Middle School are encouraging local support of friends and relatives who have been called to serve and whose families may Mrs Barbara Nielson Principal at Deha South Elementary was a guest of the Utah State Legislature in Salt Lake City this past week Each year a number of individuals are nominated across the state for their service in education This year our local PTA nominated Mrs Nielson for the many contributions she has made here in the Millard School District and especially for her leadership st the South Elementary She is a real advocate of quality education Principal Nielson has been the author of many programs that have improved the quality of education in this part of die state The award was presented in die legislative session it read as follows “Utah Slate Legislative Award presented to Mrs B arbara Nielson in recognition of distinguished service in education 1991 Mrs Nielson we congratulate you in this achievement The Delta South faculty and staff are proud of your accomplishment need special help "HOPE” is the acronym for "Helping Our People Endure” Fillmore Elementary Chipmunks on the go Good health yellow ribbons and teddy bears at FES Another week of learning at Fillmore Elementary School was highlighted by First Aid yellow ribbons and teddy bears In addition students continued to read for the Principal’s Moustache Removal Reading Challenge and also started reading for the RIF In Celebration of Reading Contest Meanwhile the teachers participated in a 2 day workshop entitled “Talents Unlimited” Student nurses Kathy Hunt and Cherry Wingct visited the third grades on Tuesday to teach the students about good health practices Basic principles of cleanliness and dental care were covered in the presentation Kathy and Cherry are enrolled in the Sevier Valley Applied Technology Center’s nursing program Teaching the lesson helped them to meet one of the requirements for their program Fillmore Elementary joined in the community’s effort to show our support for the servicemen in Saudi Arabia by displaying scores of yellow ribbons in front of the school The project has been spearheaded by the Fillmore Chamber of Commerce Mrs Wood’s first grade invited teddy bears to class for Friday and the response from the Teddy Bear commuOver 30 nity was very enthusiastic teddy bears were in attendance Mrs Wood’s first graders enjoyed many activities including Teddy Bear musical chairs sorting teddy bears and writing original teddy bear books complete with illustrations Students continued reading for the Principal's Moustache Removal Reading Challenge February 4 was to be the deadline for turning in slips The two classes which have read the most will provide their teachers with the opportunity to shave off Principal Charles Ferguson's moustache At press time Mrs Allen’s 4th grade was ahead with Miss 4th grade Mrs Rowley's Johnson's 3rd grade and Mrs Perkin's 3rd grade all with a shot for second place new reading contest was also troduced last week the In Celebration of Reading Contest sponsored by the NaStudents are tional RIF Foundation required to keep track of their home reading for two weeks If they read the minimum amount of time required they are entered in a drawing to be held on February 15 teachers learned some stimulating strategies to help students become skillful in l thinking skills These included strategies in the areas of procommunications ductive thinking and planforecasting A Dallin’s feelings about being an American (in his own words) American is a good place to live because it is safe You can choose what you want to do like go to Disneyland and stuff A lot of times you don’t have to ask the cop if you can do things cuz’ most stuff s not against the law It’s a good place to live cuz people share stuff “Our armies are trying to protect that other America from the bad guys” “We’re having a war so we can help die other people because Saddam Hussein is taking stuff and ruining dial other world” Wc want to get the war over because it’s dangerous We want the army guys for debate and So American Fork High School for individual events Nine competitors debated in and Lincoln Douglas areas at Pleasant Grove and two team members participated in oratory at American Fork Russell Kennedy and David Nickle x a team debated in die final round to each receive a first place trothink we took a phy Kennedy said qualified first place because the vote by the three judges in
