"Remember what c used to do to Isaac?" Natalie Chortles Kirsten’s eyes light up with delight "Oh boy do I?! We would” and she dashes off intoyet another tale of sibling warfare and revenge This scenario is so commonplace that it sometimes seems ludicrous to imply that siblings even get along with each other at all but research Terry Barnes and I recently completed suggests quite the opposite We found that not only do siblings for the most part have fairly amicable relationships with one another but they play a critical role in the development of each other’s positive self image We studied young children in either third fourth or fifth grades who were oldest in their family They had at least two but not more than five younger siblings and were living with both natural parents Through questionnaires we measured the children’s perceptions of themselves their perceptions of the warmth power and conflict in their relationships with their two younger siblings and their perceptions of the warmth and involvement in their relationships with their parents Similar to many other studies we found that the warmth children felt in their relationships with their parents was strongly related to the children’s own positive self image Howevci in this study the amount of warmth ar d responsiveness the felt betw een themselves and their next two closest siblings was most strongly related to the children’s positive perceptions of self Perceptions of parental warmth were very important but perceptions erf sibling warmth were most important of all to the development of a healthy Why was this so? Keep in mind that the study participants were children in middle childhood They were elementary school students Although for children this age parents are still extremely important peers are becoming very important as well Age- - and siblings probably seem almost like peers and as such that went and teamed all about the county and how it operates and I just feel like I’m a winner whether I win or lose I have absolutely no regrets" — Peterson said meeting people was Peterson lamented what he called one of three things he enjoyed most "the ugly rumor syndrome" in the camabout the campaign Also “in this parpaign “That's where the grapevine carticular election more than any I’ve ever ries in a lot of cases false information observed" he said “there is a signifiabout people about me or about my cant level of interest in local governopponent” ment I think that’s very healthy I’m If be wins Peterson planned to very happy to see that” “organize and get ready to change scats He also noted he felt pleased “to be from the county attorney to county able to contribute some ideas that could commissioner ” If he loses "I take what improve the way government is run I've teamed from the experience and I around here" get on with life” he said - Take a close look at your employment benefits If there are layoffs would you get severance pay? How much will your health insurance cost if you are laid off? Federal law requires businesses to offer continued employee health insurance at two percent above the company's cost far up to 18 months after your job is terminated f you are a two income family you may w ant to look into the costs of medical coverage under your spouse’s medical plan in the event one of you loses a job - Examine your sources of emergency income These may include cash value life insurance policies individual retirement accounts and company retirement plans You should avoid dipping into retirement money except as a last resort Not only will this put you in a vulnerable position later in life but you w 31 pay a 10 percent tax penalty on the money you withdraw from these accounts Nobody likes the idea of asking for public assistance but if you are laid off you should apply for unemployment This is not a handout it is money you have been paying into the system while you were employed Lown says and family climate are increasingly special companions for each other In addition to the impact they seemed to have on children’s perceptions of self siblings were important to general fam3y dynamics Not only was sibling warmth most closely related to but the warmth children’s and cooperation felt between siblings was also most strongly related to the warmth and responsiveness parents displayed in the home If tales of sibling rivalries replete at family reunions have any grain of truth at all Terry and I hope it is a wee little grain for the quality of sibling relationships seems to have a significant impact and on parenon children's tal warmth and responsiveness as well groining sillily? Go figure like You frown when confused when you’re doing your taxes when angry like after you've done your taxes or when broke like (I’m not writing this too fast am I?) after you’ve paid your taxes Some things you can't do without smiling I’ll list no frinstances leaving the rest of this paragraph to your own subtle imagination and ample sense of ethics Humans aren’t the only species that smile The human smile may indicate merriment triumph or intoxication but when you see a chimpanzee gorilla or politician smile beware: the animal may be frightened and ready to bite you As cute as my grandson’s smile is I’m sure it comes as much from pleasure when his Mom gives him his bbiky as it does from relief of temporary gastric distress (By the way the last time I fed Taylor I think I solved the riddle of the mysterious Mona Lisa smile) So it seems many faces hide behind a smile some needing stiff jail sentences Severely clenched teeth does not a smile make Finally this may help explain the drawing: I don't pretend this column is senous social discourse After all I'm not I vana Trump I write this column instead of running up and down Main Street nek kid with my hair on fire which I’d rather do but the city has a law against setting one’s hair on fire And I'm running out of hair So I write for fun and the smile at the top of the column is a symbol of that fun Then again maybe it’s a secret code ROUTE continued company has never delivered gas before In the wake of renewed interest by CUG Mountain Fuel Supply Co officials have been in the area courting local mayors city councils and county commissions MFSC has not asked for franchises yet however Company officials say delivery in centra Utah w31 depend in part on whether or not they can tap an interstate pipeline Both the Kent River and WyCal lines will run through all three counties in central Utah CUG officials have said they don't require either Kent River or WyCal to build a delivery system to Delta Officials from both companies agree that the Utah Public Service Commission will likely not grant two companies permits to deliver gas to central Utah customers Meanwhile Ncphi is undertaking a third alternative by creating a municipal system tapping the Questar pipeline north of the city The decision to allow the pipeline through Fishlake National Forest will likely be implemented in late November Copies of the Environmental Impact Statement on the project are avail The Bill of Rights and Beyond (Editor’s note: Various celebrations are being undertaken throughout the nation now through 1991 the bicentennial of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights Here b our modest contribution: the text of the BD1 of Rights the guarantor of your personal freedoms) AMENDMENT I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances AMENDMENT n A militia being necessary to the security of a free State the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed AMENDMENT Cl No soldier shall in time of peace be quartered in any house without the consent of the owner nor in time of war but in a manner to be prescribed by law AMENDMENT IV The right of the people to be secure in their persons houses psapers and effects ig ainst unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated and no warrants shall issue but upxm probable cause supported by oath or affirmation and particularly describing the place to be searched and the persons or things to be seized AMENDMENT V No person shall be held to answer for a caprftal or otherwise infamous crime unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury except in cases vising in tJtc land or naval forces or in the militia when in actual service in time of w ar or pjublic danger nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life and limb nor shall goody good! rude and They kick alike txif tbere's a difference between a smile a smirk and gas I am comforted in the strength of a smile It is said frontiersman when he Davy Crockett kilt him a bar the critwas only three by ter In modern social discourse a smile cm scare a potential adversary espe"I’ve go cially if while smiling you say the negatives” I read that it takes more muscles to frown then to smile "Hm" I thought at the time Then “Ouch” I thought smile more Okay lazy people should often than the industrious right?
