planning party the Millard Saturday September Eagle FFA Chapter officers held their annual planning party Travis Reid Casey Peterson Crystal Olson Kristin Bums Shawn Quamberg Royce Stevens and their advisor Mr Hunter were all present After playing croquet the officers had a pi timing meeting over dinner The group then went swimming It was a lot of fun and everyone had a great time Thanks to the Reid Shawn Quamberg Casey Peterson Kristin Bums Travis Quamberg Crystal Olson JW Davies and Royce Stevens along with their advisor Mr Ben Hunter attended the conference up Mu Pleasant canyon to help develop their leadership skills developing chapter friendships unity and commitment were sponsored by the state officers Games and group activities helped to keep the day fun for everyone and at the same time helped to increase the knowledge of the FFA program The Millard Eagle chapter returns home with new ideas and an excitement for the new school year The officers hope to make this the best the search for Extrarrestial intelligence” Such a phrase could come from the mouth of a debater this year The topic for two man debate or Cross Ex debate as it is often called is how to go about increasing space exploration Competition starts for DHS debaters November 4 with a novice tournament at Provo High The team will be competing almost every weekend until Region and Stale in March The team will travel to different cities around the state competschools ing aginst Mr Hansen the forensics coach has some goals for this year “I want to con tinue building a strong team and place better at second or first" Several students got a head start for this year’s competition by attending a two week work shop at CEU this summer Among the 160 students from Utah and neighboring states were nine chapter Youth City Council begins with a jig By Loretta Tenney Delta Youth City Council will begin the seasons activities with a dance The dance will be held September 15 1990 from 9:00-:30 pm at the tennis courts on Main Street It is free of charge and is open to all high school students The music will be by Curt Simmons Applications for membership will be available at the dance or applications can be obtained from the DHS office or any council member The fust meeting after the dance will be held Wednesday September 19 1990 at the City Council chambers The YCC is a youth organization designed to make teens more aware of how city govemmant functions and is under the umbrella of the Delta City Council The actual council was elected last May but won’t be sworn in until the fourth Monday of this month Dorothy Jeffery is the adult adviser of the group Jenny Wright is the mayor with Curtis Simmons Brooke Petersen Lisa Nielsen Jason Hales and Loretta Tenney as council members Dianne Hales as recorder and Shawn B ills as attorney At the weekly meetings problems are discussed solutions suggested and committees are appointed to investigate The proper channels for approving a project are followed and the project is either rejected or carried out One of the projects planned for this year is “Trauma Teddies" teddy bears that will travel with the EMT’s to comfort children who are injured or whose parents are injured Another project to be looked at is the beautification of Main Street Garbage cans and planters would be placed along Main to cut down on litter and to make Delta look nice Dianne Hales said of the beautification project “I feel that if we get it off the ground it will really be an asset to the community" The Council also plans to have a dinner for the residents of llte Sands Apartments and contribute to the program Last year’s Youth City Council helped with the community's project did Singing Valentines and sponsored a dinner for the Sands Elementary School broke the summer reading record this summer when 155 students earned the top award possible The 155 students who qualified read at least 50 books each and met other requirements during the summer The students were honored last Tuesday when they became members of the Royal Order of the Golden Chipmunk They also earned S500 cash awards from the PTA certificates and their names were read over the intercom system and enshrined in the Chip R Munk Summer Reading Club Hall of Fame The old record was established last year when 151 students qualified In addition to those earning
