against a wildland backdrop however can be a dream turned into a nightmare in the event of a wildfire More than 300 homes on average are lost each year to wildfires in this country according to the National Fire Protection Association From now until August 2 the NFPA rates the potential for experiencing wildfires in the West Desert as “high” The danger in eastern Utah is rated by the organization as “extreme" Some fires cannot be prevented but the following are some tips from the NFPA to take the help protect your home and life in case of a wildfire (for additional information and local regulations consult your local fire protection organization): PLANNING Site A level site is safer than a sloped site as fire spreads more rapidly uphill Access roads are necessary to allow access to your lot by fire fighting apparatus as well as your evacuation If your home is to be built on a be sure that the radius is a minimum of 45 feet so emergency equipment can access and turn Remember as with indoor home escape plans you should know two ways to get away from your home in the event of a fire Fire Protection Capabilities Check to see if the area has an adequate water supply and a fire department within close proximity BUILDING One of the major causes Roofing of home loss in wildland fires is untreated wood shake or shingle roofs Choose asphalt tile slate asbestos concrete shingle sheet metal or fire retardant treated wood shingles or shakes Decks and Porches Be sure any wooden decks you build docs not face a slope Again slopes act as chimneys and flames smoke quickly carrying upward Also be sure lo wire mesh or screen any open areas under decks or porches to keep ou: sparks or embers Windows Thick tempered multiple pane safety glass is the safest choice for windows especially those which may face a sloped area Nonflammable shutters and fire resistant - drapes add extra protection should the windows fail Be sure to cover vents Louvres with wire mesh no larger than 14 inch to prevent sparks from being drawn in Be sure to screen your Chimney wire chimney with noncombustible mesh screening Addrtss Will fire fighters be able to find your house? Be sure that your home andor lot are clearly marked can Vegetation Landscaping greatly enhance the appearance of your home But did you know that what your choose to plant and where you plant it can have an influence on your home’s fire resistance? Clear weeds brush and other vegetation from within a minimum 30 feet from your home Fire resistive plants are available which can actually create a safety zone or fire break around the house Check with your local fire protection organization for a list of fire resistive plants which will thrive in your area Fire Protection Features Every home regardless of location should be equipped with smoke detectors on every level and outside each bedroom Of equal importance to the installation of detectors is proper maintenance Be sure to regularly test the detector and replace batteries at least once a year Also an interior automatic sprinkler system is another important fire protection feature you should consider Electrical W ires The safest way to provide electricity is through underground wiring MAINTENANCE Clear dead vegetation and debris - Tree limbs overhanging a roof can act as effective fire catchers and spreaders Gutters and eaves clogged with foliage and other debris can accumulate and can easily be ignited by sparks and embers Clear these regularly Store firewood away from house - Firewood should be stored well away from any structure including a house garage fence and shed Avoid outside burning Windblown sparks are the cause of many fires Before burning check with your local authorities on the legality and requirements for outside burning in your area Develop i contingency plan -- Does your family know what to do in case of a fire? Have yew developed a home escape plan outlining two exits from every room? Does your family rehearse the plan regularly? - - |
