husband Dell was the administrator of the new facility in 1963 and had very little help in terms of staff “He was in charge of doing the billand the ing the medical records lab work" she said “He was expected to do that all by himself So I came to work for him during the first two years with no pay I guess you could say I was the first volunteer for the hospital" At the end of the two years Mrs Ashby received another job offer only this one would pay She said that when she showed signs of taking the other job the hospital was able to come up with funds to entice her to stay and continue the work she was doing “I’ve never been sorry I stayed" she said "I have enjoyed working with the patients and the staff of the hospital They are my neighbors and friends and it's been nice to feel like you are able to hclpthem in some way through the work you do here at the hospital" Over the years Mrs Ashby said she has seen many changes come about in health care Changes not only in the technology available to patients and health care providers but changes also in requirements made on hospitals by the govern me nL “I think one of the major changes was when Medicare was enacted in 1966" she said "We were suddenly faced with new requirements in admitting billing and the keeping of medical records And over the years the involvement of the government in medical care has continued to grow to a point where the number of people involved in keeping track of everything has grown to require many more employees Mrs Ashby said she also took pride in the fact that she was working in a hospital that had been built by the community she was part of through donated labor and funds Yet she said as the years went by the challenges for the community and that original hospital were becoming very threatening “Several years ago we began look ing around the country and there were small we hospitals closing everywhere looked" Mrs Ashby said “Dell recognized that like those hospitals Jiat were closing Delta was faced with many of the same problems and appeared to be headed down that same road unless something was to be done" At that point Dell Ashby approached the hospital’s board of trustees and a move was made to enlist the aid of a hospital corporation in keeping the doors of the hospital open in Delta It Delta Public Health will sponsor a cholesterol Screening Clinic on Jan 24 the needs of the community But as the when it First opened community grew so too did its “There is no health care needs comparison between what we had then and what we have now” she said “If we were sbll in the old hospital we would not be able to care for the patients properly In the old building we only had one emergency room bed Now we have six We literally had people sitting in the hallway in their hospital gowns waiting for Times change according to Mrs Ashby who still remembers Dr Bird's original hospital in Delta “He performed a great service We honestly couldn’t have then done without that hospital or him" Mrs Ashby said “But we grew out of the need for that facility just as we did w ith the old hospital Our community has grown and so have our needs I personally believe that a lot of lives have been saved that otherwise might not have been because of our ability to take care of people because of this new hospital” Originally from Hinckley Mrs Ashby said she is glad she has been able to stay in Millard County and raise her family which consists of Five children and 15 grandchildren "Our love of the community and its people has kept us here” she said “We believed this would be a good place to raise our family and it certainly was" In her retirement she said she plans on spending time with her family and doing a lot of reading “I’m just going to do the things I haven’t had time to do for the past 40 years” she said Food Handler Class Schedule For 1990 Cholesterol Screening Clinic Cantaloupe was through that move that Intermountain Health Care a corporation in the intermountain west based in Salt Lake City built a hospital in Delta and one in Fillmore and took over management of Millard County’s health care operations in 1984 “I think I can honestly say that Delta would not have the quality of hospital it has today if it were not for Intermountain Health Care “Many people did not feel we needed a new hospital and they voted the bond down They need to realize that it was not their taxes that paid for the building of this hospital IHC came here and built the hospital with their own funds because of their commitment to rural health care in Utah” Per-
