Show November Comments IS 69 16 Goodness gracious can sou believe Clinsimas is about upon us know hate to bnrg n up before Thanksgiving but as I have been invited on a little tnp to Taipei won't be able to complain about how close Taiwan right after Thanksgiving Christmas is because won 't be here so have to do it now Did that make any sense? Any w ay I have it figured out that there are 32 shopping day s until Christmas from nght no w but has e to deduct the day s I w ill be in Tai w an or pi an to do some shopping while there We gel tons of things from Taiwan anyway and I could buy direct and eliminate the middlemen have been trying to study up on Taiwan but the fact that I am really going just hasn 't settled in yet I w as elected to the NNA board and practically the next day find out Taiwan unites us to attend their elections and a film festival Tough duty Any w ay the basics o! Taiw an arc it is an island just off the China mainland north of the Philippines and south of Japan It is 235 miles long and 90 miles wide with a big mountain range runmrg lengthwise The mountain range has a peak that is over 12090 feet and the terrain a ally limits how much of the island is inhabitable There are around 20 million people there mostly Chinese and very anti Communist Agriculture used to be the main part of the economy but with 21 150 square miles and about 23 uninhabitable and a population of about 20000000 it figures out to about 2800 people per square mile a condition wmch seriously curtails farming Millard County is about 6’ 0 square miles and the population is about 13000 so we have about 2 persons pier square mile And the flip of the comparison is if you added about 17 million to Millard county Just tough for me to visualie I guess I’ll just have to see it to comprehend it How did get from Christmas shopping to the population of Taiwan? Just goes to show the the detours my mind will take to avoid the Christmas shopping issue Happy Thanksgiving - V Delta Area H' Mien Kceil l t i Fillmore Area ' 2 U j 1 Rugrrs Community Calendar Motor Vehicle Schedule- Fillmore & Delta weekdays Millard County Assessor’s Office 2nd Thursday of Month Great Basin Historical Society meeting 7 30 pm Even Thursday TOPS meets at Delta Middle School dining room 5 pm 10 am Wednesdays Story Hour Delta City Library November National Breast Cancer Awareness Month November 12 18 Geography Awareness Week November 16 Service Officer for American Legion will be at Delta Job Service (City Olfice Building) 2 3 pm American Cancer Society ’s Great American Association Diabetes American meeting “Reading Labels and Convert ing Favorite Foods” Ruby Vodak Speaker 7 pm Fillmore Hospital November 17 Fifth annual Utah women’s conference in Salt Lake Oasis Ward Holly Fair Dinner 6 pm Bazaar 7 pm The Millard County Chronicle Progress USPS Published at Della ever) Ihursday L'uh 84624 by DuWiI Publishing ai 40 Located 300 W Lull Delta Publisher Editor Susan Dutson Editorial Ken Rand Reporter Julie Ward (locru - Design Sales & Accounts Riley Wood Rita Robinson Sales Mallei Evelyn 5 Manager CHRONICLE PROGRESS Get results with ads Call Rita at Circulation Julie Gocrt Rita Robinson pm Ret Office Fillmore November 18 Suzanne Remkes and Adam Travis Pahvant Rowley wedding reception Senior Senter Fillmore 7 - 9 pm “Scouting for Food" 19 25 November National Family Caregiving Week November 21 Food Handlers Class Della Public Health 2:30 pm ($5 fee) November 23 Jerry Christensen and Chris Holmes wedding open house 664 East Tamarack Street (White Sage) Delta 7 - 9 pm November 24 Michele Hamm and Bradley Jeffery wedding open House 7 9 pm Della lst2nd Ward November 25 Delta High School Class of 1964 union pm 1PP Comm unity Center Mike and Amber Monroe wedding open house 7 9 pm Scipio Ward November 26 Elder Brett Wardle mission farewell Delta 1st Ward am Open House M E Bird Center Delta 12:30 - 4pm November 27 Immunization Clinic Delta Public :30 am & 4:30 pm Health 9 November 28 Kenneth Robison and Brenda Martin Fillmore lst4ili wedding reception Ward pm December 6 Blixid Pressure Clinic Delta 1:30 am & pm December 15 Signup deadline for Delta EMT class Millard County Office 71 S 200 West Delta January 4 “Systematic Training for Effective Parenting" model at Fillmore 24th January Emergency Medical Training Course Delta Tuesdays pm & Saturdays 9 am Advertising CircuUuonComp or Evelyn at CirculationProduction Commercial Printing 743-53- Shellie Dulson Subscriptions in Advance County $2000 per year $ 300 per 6 montlis Out of County $25 (X) per year Single Copy - 50 cents Deadlines In POST MASTFR: to changes PO Send Address Box 249 Delta Utah 84624 Rales on Request Advertising Second Class Postage Paid at Delta Utah 84624 Delta: or 864 2214 Fillmore: DUWIL PUBLISHING OWNED SUSAN WILLIAM COMPANY BY DUTSON WILSON & Media Man! Simply that in far too many instances teachers support wilderness Teachers leach their designation classes that wildnemess is wonderful and the more the better Teachers teach their students that industry oil and gas production and mining are bad and ruinous taht m an ‘s activities on publ ic lands are inherently evil and that wildnemess is a panacea Why is it that educators can recognize a pile of dollars and set up a hue and cry for it but they cannot recognize where those dollars come from or what is necessary to earn them in the first place? N ot one ed ucation representative has spoken out for preservation of essential multiple use on our public lands Not one has spoken out against further wilderness designation in Utah Where is James Moss and the State School Board? Where is Rolf Kerr and the Board of Regents? Where is the state School Superintendents Association? Where is the Utah Education Association? Not a wimper is to be heard from these people as our public land and its energy and mineral resources are being locked up by Wayne Owens and Company Because the education community has actually worked against the multiple use of our public lands that has and would continue to support jobs and public revenues I find the current dog fight over a pile of dollars to be a disgusting exercise in hypocrisy The whole sordid scenario is not unlike the story of die Little Red Hen Those who stand the risks and put forth die effort to work the land are the hens and once die money is made education becomes die little pig that would not help but is more dian willing toengourge itself widi the fruits of dial labor risk and investment Paul L Young Helper Utah tax Food safety perceptions By Dennis Hinkamp Consumer Information Writer Utah State University The food safety conference held in Salt Lake City a couple weeks ago presented two interesting lists The ranked list of consumer food fears: 1) pesticides 2) hormones 3) nitrites and 4) irradiation The ranked list of food supply risk priorities as determined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA): 1) microbes 2) nutrient imbalances 3) environmental pollutants 4) natural toxins and 5) pesticides 'The difference in the two lists shows how far apart consumers and the FDA are Consumers often feel outranged that the FDA isn’t doing more to address their fears when in reality the FDA is saying consumer’s fears are insignificant relative to other problems I have to side with the FDA on this one The problem with trying to measure consumer concerns is that they are generally If you had surveyed consumers five years ago the list of fears might have included artificial sweeteners asbestos and radon Three months from now the list may change The FDA in its wisdom has set priorities that are goals for a safer environment and food supply This is not to say that the FDA and agriculture in general aren’t trying to reduce dependence on pesticides DOVE continued mind Thursday Means said Thursday that Dove was not getting the speedy trial he is guaranteed under the law Madsen said Dove should have appeared 60 days ago Park said a defendant is entitled to trial within 30 days unless he waives the right to a speedy trial or the judge’s calendar is so full that a delay is forced Park said his criminal calendar was so full a November trial dale was not possible The December date was the earliest available for a trial Dove filed for Chapter reorganization under the US Bankruptcy Act two years ago while continuing to run seven stores in an effort to make enough money to pay off creditors hi February he filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquida tion process His properties were then sold at auction Christine Bruhn consumer marketing specialist at the University of California-Davioutlined the ongoing research in For pest control instance she said California is using the “bug vacuum” for some pests From my perspective as a consumer if you are worried about miniscule pesticide residues on food you haven’t given the subject of worrying much thought There are at least 28 things that worry and scare me more than pesticides food in food: Home ownership of automatic weapons drug kingpins drug kingpins who own automatic weapons nuclear warfare chemical warfare conventional warfare limited warfarew international terrorism the national debt the new fall season on CBS books Don Shirley MacLaine King’s hair Donald Trump’s ego Nolan Ryan’s fastball Mike Tyson’s left hook Roseanne Barr’s wardrobe pro wrestling people who watch pro wrestling drinking an entire super slurpee the stuff in the back of my freezer professional athlete’s salaries my uncle Norm’s secret chili recipe the Friday night crowd at the video rental store women who wear black lipstick the baby picture my parents have of me gravy heavy metal hour on MTV and McDonald’s in Russia AA MEETING SCHEDULE Monday -
