in Southern Utah have affected wildlife in different ways The dry spring in early 1989 resulted in excellent conditions for upland game Chuckar and grouse numbers have improved over the last year or so Cold wet storms in the spring can ebe devastating to upland game bird nests Pheasant numbers appear to be higher than last year in the Delta area hut still lower than usual Big game was affected differently this last year The extremely cold winter and dry spring conditions resulted in lower antelope fawn production Pregnant does rely heavily on lush green growth of vegetation in early spring The very dry April we experienced caused this spring growth to cure and dry up earlier than normal Fawndoe counts on the Southwest Desert Unit dropped from approximately 75 fawns per 100 does in 1968 to 34 fawns per 100 does in 1989 Since this antelope unit is a draw unit this drop in fawn production isn’t as serious as it would be on an open buck deer unit Most of the open buck units are dependant on yearling bucks for the majority of the harvest Preliminary preseason counts are showing a continued drop in the mule deer fawndoe ratio The cumulative effects of bad winters on s deer herd in the past are often overlooked For by sportsmen example the great majority of bucks harvested on units are 2 12 years old Two years ago many of our better unit experienced Consehigh fawn winter kill quently few legal deer are being seen this year prior to the 1989 deer hunt A good segment of this years harvest died two winters ago Fewer deer were reported harvested during the archery hunt in 1969 Deer hunters are asked to be sure of your targets before firing Last year the illegal harvest on units almost exceeded the legal harvest Many herd units have had other big game species transplanted on them At least three elk that were in the Canyon transplanted east of Delta were shot Range during the 1986 deer hunt These transplants are financed by you sportsmen to increase the recreational use of elk in Utah Help protect your investment know what you are shooting at and report violations witnessed in the field eral friends contributed a little under 300 hours of work in planand constructing ning designing the unloading ramp was comWhen the project and Mike his troop stood pleted hack and looked at the new unloading ramp and said “It looks pretty good The Forest Service and users of the new unloading ramp want to say thanks to Mike and his helpers for a job w done Snow College offers concurrent enrollment More than 260 high school stuarea are dents in the getting a head start on their college education through a cooperative program with Snow College called concurrent enrollment to Snow’s dirtor of According Mel JacobCoritin uing Education sen not only are students getting Snow College credit but that credit is completely transferable to other schools in the state system Concurrent enrollment means that a high school student is enrolled in cine or more college courses at the same time heshe is enrolled in high school The concurrent enrollment courses are taught at the high school by high school teachers and the credit that the student earns counts for of high school graducompletion ation requirements as well as for college credit Currently seven high schools are participating in the program They include Delta Gunnison Marti Millard North Valley Sanpiete North Sevier and South Sevier Instructors at each of those high schools work directly with instructors at Snow College to make sure that their respective students are receiving the same instruction In order for a student to qualify for the program heshe must be a junior or senior and have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3 5 (275 for vocational students taking vocational courses) or higher and a GPA of 3 0 or better in the subject for which the student is applying The student must also have the recommendation of one or more teachers Classes thst are being taught this year under the concurrent enrollment program include courses in English Composition Algebra Trigonometry' American Civilization Chemistry Computers Woodwork Drafting Cabinet Construction and Welding Students can earn up to 16 (and sometimes more) hours of credit while still in high school which is the equivalent of a full quarter of college And while students do pay tuition for the credit it is only a fraction of the normal college tuition In a time of increasing education costs concurrent enrollment can help students and parents make the most of their education dollars Venison Meat Balls a
