This is not the most common commoditybdt one which Kathy Mincer the wife of Converter Station Manager Norman Mincer made for a friend To go about the seemingly odd task the friend brought of the aniKathy an accumulation mal’s hair (Samoyan Husky) that she had saved from repeated combings Kathy then went to her spinning wheel where she spun the hair into yam Knitting needles were next and within a short time a beautiful patterned shaded brown sweater emerged Admiring observers were none the wiser as to the origin of the material and as far as they were concerned it might as well have come from the local department store This is just one story in Kathy’s involvement with spinning and weaving Current visitors to the Mincer home will find a large room above their double car garage housing two spinning wheels a large wooden loom and countless shelves containing raw material fabrics threads and all other appurtances necessary for the art of spinning and weaving Kathy’s love for weaving began a number of years ago when she and Norman were living in Arizona Both loved lamb (chops that is) but were unable to find them most of the time to find the quality and particularly they desired This resulted in raising their own sheep Doing the compassionate thing they spared their small herd of two from the discomfort of the Arizona sun and sheared them to Kathy this took all According day At the conclusion of the arduous task she began feeling the wool and was fascinated with its texture The next day she was and softness on the phone trying to find out about She was able to find a spinning class taught by Olive and Harry Linder the foremost spinners in the United States and the rest is history Kathy herself became one of the most skilled spinners and weavers’ She was the first in the country spinner in the United States to receive the “Certificate of Excellence” for spinning from the Hand Weavers The certificate is Guild of America At the time five award a weavers applied for part one and two weavers for part two Kathy was the both parts only one to complete The certificate consisted of: Spinning 40 samples of thread made from all natural fibers 2 Weaving the thread into samples of material and telling how each could be used 3 Complctingan samples thread of 4 Producing 100 material from the spun 5 Making 4 finished pieces Kathy’s were a women’s suitof silk and wool a cotton dress a long wool coat and a silk dress The spinning process first takes the raw fibers and turns them into thread or yam After the fabric is spun on the spinning wheel it is woven into material of the loom The four most common fabrics are cotton wool flax and silk although there are literally hundreds of from rabbit hair to whatever can be fed into the spinFlax is the material ning wheel from which linen is made To the novice the raw form of wool cotton and silk appear to feel about the Flax is ropelike in consissame tency finKathy has many beautiful ished products in her studio Not is she and a a weaver spinner only but also a talented seamstress Her latest project was a set of living room drapes for her parents who live in Nevada Many colors in woven fabrics come from the natu- -
