St George Friday Nov 18 for his contribution to public health in Utah The Health Officers Association of Utah has begun presenting a plaque each year to the person the group feels has done the most for public health in Utah during the previous year Dr Mark Nichols president of the group - ICr’ UV - Bonnie and Sam Bringard show off the cutter horse saddle they made for a customer in Las Vegas on saddle starts at about $850 A saddle is made of a wood base with a rawhide cover Sam says Saddle bases are also made of Ralide a plastic form Sam and Bonnie don't care personally for the plastic form “It’s just like a car” Bonnie explains “If you get a car you want it to be the best That’s the way a saddle should be You get out on a junky saddle you’re looking for a wreck” Sam says the wood and rawhide base is stronger Bonnie does all the sewing by hand “Except on the hard part of the she says "I don’t do that That’s too hard for me to push through but I do all of the stirrups saddlebags and all that It’s all done by hand” Sam and Bonnie have a 1903 Singer machine their in store they use patching frequently Sam also repairs old saddles “Some are riding their Grandpas saddles” he says “Some of them don’t fit these modern horses The old Uny saddles are We have wider horses narrower nowadays” Sam and Bonnie pointed out a 1879 saddle base with a spread and a new saddle he was workspread ing on with a He makes more than just saddles “I make just about everything in the western line” he sajs “I make belts wallets saddlebags chaps you name by Ken Rand Sam Bringard has been messing around with leather since he was nine years old Today Sam and Bonnie do leatherwork for profit but it’s still a lot of fun Sam’s Saddlery opened for business about a month ago at 298 West Main in Delta on the corner where Delta Drug used to be Sam and Bonnie are sharing the building with Carolyn’s Upholstery Sam and Bonnie are Delta natives Sam says he’s been making saddles for about 10 years but he’s been in leatherwork all his life “I just started on my own” Sam says “I didn't take it in school or Most of what learned is anything When Sam was nine he took the tops of old cowboy boots and made holsters for other kids to play with He sold them for 15 cents each His first tools were an old pocket knife a hammer a nail with grooves filed in the head for a stamp and a file for his background tool He was 19 at the time Sam made his first saddle while "A working on ranches in Arizona friend of mine was a saddle maker He was working for Ralph Shimmm in We got together and we Colorado started making a few out in Arizona just went from there” Until recently most of Sam’s work was out of Wayne County where he rode for Jack King “I made about 15 or 20 over there” he says “and six or eight down in Las Vegas” Another saddle is in Dameron Valley near St George Good saddle makers are few and far between “It’s getting to be a lost art” Bonnie says Sam says there is a saddle maker in Kanosh a couple in Cedar City one in St George and a top hand in Ogden “And they’re all very good hands with leather” he says “Some of the better ones I’ve seen aie right here in Utah There are some good ones in other places but I've seen some darn good ones right here” Making a saddle takes time about but it all 100 hours Sam estimates depend' on how fancy a saddle a night Many bopped but few Sam also made a leather carrying case for a vacuum cleaner The leather case was commissioned by Electrolux salesman Gordon Burke Winter is a busy time for saddle makers Bonnie says “People generally aren’t using their horses as much and they need repair work in the winter because in the summer they use them all the time” For anyone interested in learning “Take a leatherwork Sam advises service to local public health is hereby presented to Commissioner Warren E Jensen on this day of November 1988 by the Health Officers Association of Utah an association of local health officers dedicated to the preservation of the public health and the promotion of wellness in all” Jensen serves as chairman of the Public Health Board for the six county area in central Utah which includes Sanpete Juab Sevier Wayne Piute He has been and Millard County credited with helping solve some administrative problems in the organization Seeing a need to train rural health care officials Jensen organized a training session that included officials from every board of public health in Utah The state helped provide lecturers for the workshop held at Bullfrog The state also helped pay costs of the symposium The session was so well received it will become an annual event To accomplish that a new state organization for all 12 public boards of health has been created The organization will meet quarterly and organize an annual training session for health officials One suggestion Jensen passed on that was enacted by the new organization was that leadership be alternated between rural and urban professionals Jensen was elected first president of the group He will serve one year Some tax refunds still not claimed The Internal Revenue Service has 373 refund checks worth more than $142000
