“Don’t give breast cancer a place to hide!” With this announcement from the American Cancer Society the East Millard Unit of ACS hopes to reach women throughout East Millard County with a lifesaving message concerning the early detection of breast cancer The Society has chosen Mammography a highly effective technique used in the early detection of breast cancer as the theme of its April 1988 educational Residential and fundraising Crusae campaign Marlene Whicker Chairperson of the East Millard Unit said: we’ve had remarkable success with mambreast in treating early mography cancers Finding a tumor at its onset means that less extensive surgery may be performed and that the chances of survival may be very high My own case as an example because the cancer was found in a very early stage I have a 90 percent chance of complete recovery and have been cancer free for 3 years" As part of this campaign more than 50 trained ACS volunteers will go distributing a folder entitled found my breast “Mammography ' cancer early and may have saved my life!” to the residents of East Millard County It includes ACS guidelines for breast health and important steps for a woman to follow to help prevent breast cancer a “Mammography of the breast may often detect a tumor before it becomes large enough to be felt even before the woman or her doctor knows it’s there said Mrs Whicker “It’s important to realize that mammography not only saves lives but also saves breasts” she added Despite evidence that mammography is an effective tool in Finding early breast cancer only 19 percent of women over 50 have annual mammograms According to Mrs Whicker “500 in Utah will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and all women should therefore consider themselves at risk for this disease The local hospital through the efforts of IHC has placed a Dedicated Mammography Unit in the Fillmore Medical Center this eliminates the need for women to travel to other areas to get the mammogram done it is my hope that women will take advantage of this convenience and utilize this unit" “We hope to dispel women’s fears about breast cancer” Mrs Whicker said “Although it’s the most common it type of cancer among women doesn’t have to kill them! We hope that by providing women of Millard County with more information about early detection of breast cancer and mammography they will become more careful about their health that means becoming more aware of their bodies too” she continued For more information about both Residential Days and mammography be sure to contact the American Cancer Society East Millard Unit at or PAHVANT VALLEY Senior Living” issue April 1988 by Nancy Price Graff entitled “Words Wit and Wonder” Mrs Graff invites children to open book of surprises- -a package of a poetry She discusses Shel Silverstein’s contributions and points out the “magic found in poetry where every child can be anything they want to be and color things any color they wish We hve four Silverstein books which are vary popular with the young people Among the advantages of reading poetry to and with young children she Susan quotes a mother of Colorado Butler as saying “We like poetry because it has words that stick in your heart” This mother takes advantage of rainy days bedtimes trips etc to share poetry with her children— it only takes a minute— not like reading a novel or even a short story Robert Louis Stevenson is another of her favorite poets He has also been such a favorite of ours that we have a new copy of “A Child’s Garden of Verses” to keep up with demand Mrs Butler also thinks “poetry has taught them (her children) something else important “Poetry has magic in it” she says explaining that the powerful words and emotions in certain poems have helped her children better understand themselves and see new
