Thank Goertz Luckily Millard County the Delta Hinckley and Fillmore areas have had a low number of rabies cases As I said luckily We have only been in the Delta area approximately two years and I see the possibilities of increase Two important yet simple steps could prevent this: rabies vaccinations and restraining your pet (dogcat etc can equally pass it on) at home! We have sat and counted the number of dogs running loose on given it astounds me! Over one day I counted 10 difI have ferent dogs noticed the “regulars”-doyou see loose around the town One seems a little different-now gets around on 3 legs rather than 4 At the groomery we have dogs come in ridden with fleas The owners cannot figure out where they come from as they state (and I see daily) the dog running loose Please through the neighborhood! people-tdog can wear a flea collar or be flea dipped but the dog’s bedrid also be must the of ding pests and the best solution is keep your pet aC home Throughout the country dogs (both purebreds and mixes) are stolen daily the numbers are staggering The dog napping business is lucrative Dogs are stolen and resold in another times to research laboratories (Utah has 14 such labs) where they live by Jane Beckwith Foreign Correspondent School is so different I don’t know if I’ll have time in one try to tell all the differences The school is large by Delta standards 1400 students in three grades The school is perched on a hill so once I get up here the view to the ut sea is nice but the trip is a 40 degree climb in 68 percent humidity By the time I reach school which takes 25 minutes I’m soaked with sweat including wet hair I didn’t know that wrists and ankles could sweat The school has three wings each five stories high so even after get here I usually have another climb to class It’s a good thing the elevation is low or I’d have a nosebleed The first two floors are for the seniors or grade 3 the next for grade 2 and the poor grade sophomores have the fourth and fifth floors They suffer other points of discrimination They all belong to the “Keep the school yard clean” team Since I’ve been here they have had to go outside and weed the grounds and sweep up hile the juniors and seniors have stayed in class The school even has a garden with tomatoes and sweet potatoes and students must care for that The students do all the cleaning in the school Every corner of the hall has a broom closet and students are assigned various parts of the school to clean bathrooms teachers’ rooms stairways Each class has its own room (Grade one has 11 classes each with 47 students in those rooms) so those students keep their own rooms clean They erase the chalkboard sweep and mop the floor everyday Students are given assignments every week in the homeroom They do a surprisingly good job although not exactly Teachers walk around thusiastically and supervise during cleaning time which is right after lunch Students sort of work their lunch off and don’t seem' so sleepy fifth period The teachers have a large area with their desks bunched according to what the teacher teaches English Math etc There is also a sink and refrigerator six copy machines and one of the school PA mikes I have yet to hear the PA used for before school lunch and except after school The desk is sort of by itself but he keeps everyone current and is always writing comcharacters on the plicated Japanese board Oh yes each bank of teachers' desks has its own phone One thing that has been interesting is that salemen come to the teachers’ room and put out quite a salepitch So far I’ve seen a stereo salesman surance and travel agents It’s so odd to watch the students approach their teachers Nervously they enter the room walk to the teacher and bow ask the question or hand them an assignment bow walk backwards to the door and bow again CirculationComp CirculationProduction Commercial Printing Dutson Shellie In Advance Subscriptions 00 per year County County $1000 per 6 months Out of County $2000 per year Out of County $1100 per 6 months In In Copy Single POSTMASTER: PO 50 cents Send Address Box 249 Delta Advrrounf Ponsfc Utah changes 84624 to at I 'Uu’fi’cC— out a miserable existence being used for experiments Is that what you want for your dog? Don’t think because of where Delta Fillmore etc are that we are exempt from this We know from experience when last spring someone was making avid attempts to steal one of our dogs! During the following time period I was contacted by numerous people who had had dogs stolen! This area is susceptible In closing I urge you to restrain your pet so it can remain such the rest of its life and make sure your pet is up on rabies as well as other vaccinations By the way during the past few months my daughter has been bitten loose by 3 different Luckily nothing drastic has happened What does it take to get people to take the extra step and restrain the pets? An incident like in Denver? A “friendly neighborhod dog” suddenly turned on a 3 year old child (the child reached through the fence while the dog was chewing on a bone) the dog came over a chainlink fence and literally tore the child apart I will not go into the assorted details I think you can get the The message point is your “neighborhood” dog can turn and do a lot of damage The parents of the 3 old above found out the hard year save a child in Delta Kim Foltz f— t V t Today a teacher told me that parents call the PTA and ask teachers to discipline their students for doing something wrong at home Very different ‘I hear that this school is a strict one The principal who only speaks Japanese has a very commanding use of Japanese which even I can understand-not the meaning but how much he means what he says The first day of school Sept which was really the first day of the second term-the students met in the gym fof an opening ceremony (Japanese people love ceremonies) Anyway when we got to the gym (There is no auditorium) the students were all ready standing in long lines single file across the floor They were wearing the school uniform white shirt with a blue design on the pocket and checked pants for the boys skirts for the girls Boys had on blue and white tennis shoes girls red and white The boys had mostly the same hair cut and I only counted four ribbons in the girls’ hair Outside the gym was the biggest pile of shoes I’d ever seen 280(5 shoes neatly stacked in rows Students must wear street shoes when they walk to school then change to green or blue slippers then change again when they go to PE or the gym It’s hard to keep track where to wear which shoe Anyway the first day of school was incredible 1400 students lined up in rows all in uniforms all quiet at attention The principal introduced me and I had to give a speech with Japanese sentences It was terrifying The normal type of greeting in school is for one student to say something and they— all the students-bo- w to the teacher After my speech the principal and I left the stage He bowed to the students then turned and bowed to the mike then before he descended the stairs he bowed to the stage As soon as he was off the stage a teacher introduced the next speaker: the principal The students groaned a little but not much They knew what was coming- -a 30 minute A teacher they remained standing translated a little of what he said: Be on time to class Do your best Study hard Do your best a little more on Be on time He left the stage with the same flourish as before bowing Then the students sang the school song and were allowed to sit on the floor They sat down in one gigantic wave first row second etc ’ It was also stated that we hid kn unfair advantage over Delta because we had a longer study period We would like to ask them “Since when is it unand well fair to be organized prepared?” Millard also was at a disadvantage Physics one of the seven areas while it MHS at offered is tested not has been at Delta Millard scored higher even in this area We would also like to mention that the score reported by Delta to be close was Millard— 20660 to Delta 16760— a difference of 3900 points We at MQIard High School haye enwe’ve had to joyed the opportunity compete wjth Delta in this event and we would like to wish them good luck next year but we feel that their chances would be better if they would paper We enjoy so much all the newsy articles We really do miss all the wonderful friends we made while ing in Holden from Oct 6 1972 to June 5 1986 We also enjoyed going to Fillmore and Delta Had lots of friends there too and We miss Evelyn Hawley Lawrence Cropper stopping by our house 200 N and 100 W They went to She the Chinese place in Milford always brought me some of her Chinese food She knew I loved it The most important highlight of the year was when our friends Neil and Renea Stevens brought our lovely Christmas tree to us After we had it all decorated and the house cleaned spick and span with all the Christmas I gave the decorations everywhere ladies a call for the pot luck at the Ruyfas Such a feast It was such a come them all smiling pleasure having through the front door Each one with food for the Christmas delicious children and wives Husbands spread Bryan and Clara Stevesn from their dairy brought about 3 gallons hot cocoa There were about 30 adults and After we ate the children 31 children went into the den where Santa Claus awaited them Then after talking to Santa each child took a bag of goodies from the goodies box Clyde and Lillian Wood were the oldest couple there But like the children they said they enjoyed it so much We gave a door prize for the ladies and men Hand lotion for the ladies and one time a wheel barrow of cut wood with a big red bow for the men Jim says he misses so much going to the woods with Clyde Wood Each took their own truck after filling them with would help each other cut wood unload then both would saw the wood in right lengths for the winter Just before we left Delma Bennett little told Tamra Ted Bennett’s daughter we were leaving She started to cry when Delma asked her why she cried She said “Well who will have the Christmas Party for us?” That is what we miss so much The friendship of the small community So much love is given and caring The one big mistake we made is that we left Holden We have often wished we were there now Best wishes for the holidays Edith and Jim Ruyf Support Nursing Education Many of us in Nursing Education watch the shortage of nurses increase in the State of Utah and the country with They are shocked and amazed that we teach 30 hours True the teachers here have more responsibilities 47 they discipline students for their behavior at home too They come to school at eight o’clock and never leave before five In fact the latest I’ve stayed is six but teachers are still here School ends officially at three but the clubs meet after that kendo English Club baseball bank— all the things If students aren’t in clubs and most seniors aren’t because they are studying for the horrible exams to get into college then some of them pay to go to juku which is tutor school Those last until seven or eight at night I am that students allow flabbergasted themselves to be in school so long No wonder the suicide rate is high As for me I’m a floating teacher I have no class I just meet with classes The students read every so often know gramEnglish pretty mar inside and out if it’s written They can write a bit They can hear and understand English a little less but they have the worst time making the sounds And there is such a push in the country for people to learn English that again the students feel a lot of pressure One of the entrance exams asks students (who can’t speak English) to find the word that has a different vowel on the accent of words like “discover” “discount” So the “destroy” students can and must learn to memorize More to come most RNs and LPNs still and nursing care centers for the elderly and handicapped As this legislative session commences 1988 in January we suppdrt our legislators and the governor in the big job they face next year and hope that health care the health professions and health education will not be found wanting when the appropriations are finalized or we will be at severe quality health care risk for ourselves and those residing within our borders Carol D Jeppson RN MA Roosevelt Utah where “A Part of ACTION” by Warren Ottley Is the food you eat before bedtime more fattening because you’re having it at night cookies cheese and crackers midnight snacks? That’s the question asked by the Harvard Medical School Health Letter It goes on to answer: “Many people think so but there’s not a scrap of evidence that shifting calories from night to morning will make any real difference in weigh control And anyone who tells you otherwise is merely perpetuating one more about fitness Like the notion that filtered cigarettes are ‘safe’ Or that caffeine is ‘not harmful’” Isn’t it peculiar that we “believe what we want to believe”? Of course there is no discounting the fact that a person with a terminal illness grasps anything that gives him the slightest dication it could help But billions of dollars are spent needlessly every year on nostrums remedies and equipment that have no redeeming value The American Lung Association is currently combatting the long held notion that it’s a difficult task to quit smoking They contend however that the “want to quit” is the first step From there on millions of Americans are proving that it can be done lots fewer are smoking than 10 years ago And there are ways to quit from group therapy sessions to the buddy system to physicians’ prescriptions Americans can be a lot healthier than we are by just wanting to be and following qualified advice Ottley’s Oddball Observation Whether or not a person will follow advice depends altogether upon how badly he is frightened New column Beginning next week Museum News will Chronicle Progress It by Matt Sheridan Park Territorial Statehouse Fillmore a new column appear in the will be written Manager of the State Park in |
