History came alive as the two men narrated and explained linking the past with the present With Spor Mountain and flourspar mining sites set as the destination points the trip began A brief stop was made at the Topaz relocation site then s with Chad and Ray relating and patiently explaining mining the trio proceeded on to operations Western States Minerals for a view of mining in operation w did Chad and Ray get into it? Where did the interest and knowledge develop and grow? It all with their began apparently a Pennsylvania P Spor steelworker George traveled from Pennsylvania to Missouri to Colorado to Utah It was in Utah that he developed an in terest and love for prospecting and mining Both interest and love were passed on to his children especially to Chad and Ray As the years passed the town of Joy and the Drum Mountain area became integral parts of all their lives In 1872 the Drum Mountain Mining District was formed in the mountains straddling the County line It was formed for exploration of gold silver copper lead iron manganes and bismuth Harry Joy and Charles Howard mining engineers from Michigan toured the area in 1879 reorganized the district and renamed it Detroit the name of their home town Harry Joy who later was to found the Packard Motor Company in Michigan and his partner established mining operations and a smelter at the new town of Joy The little town was a supply point for miners and ranchers in the region A number of dwellings were erected along with a hotel a cafe a store and several saloons Joy at its peak boasted a popula- - rJ mining cabin near Spor Mountain tion of 500 Along with the hotel saloons and stores there were two wagon repair shops and tent dwellings for the residents The “queen” who ruled supreme- -a queen who had the soul of a Mae Laird To nt these surroundings Chad and Ray first went when they were very small boys Of this town and Aunt Mae they recall many stories and hold fond memories As with hundreds of western boom towns Joy’s history was born with blood and disaster Since no great fortunes were ever made there tales of honor seem to be its lasting legacy Many stories surround the memory of Aunt Mae in the minds of the Spor brothers She had traveled from mining camp to mining camp she had a colorful background she had had her face disfigured by a flying beer bottle in a saloon she had character According to Ray Spor “She was an angel She never turned anyone from her door More often than not she would be the first one out with a rope and lantern when it was reported that someone was lost in a blizzard or miss- - ing from a long trip” Then there was Matt Evans a young man from Pennsylvania He had traveled west arriving in Joy After imbibing too much he was kicked out of the Joy saloon The next day poor Matt was found just outside the establishment frozen stiff His grave is the onand it conly known one remaining tinues to be marked with flowers all year round the “Mad remembered Chad Spor Russian” It seems everywhere he went After several people disappeared esapades the “Mad Russian” disappeared never to again return Having visited what remains of Joy the trip continued to Spor Mountain which was located in 1936 by Chad Spor and his father They were just “prospecting and ran across it” This district lies on the west side of Topaz Mountain in Juab County and it was there that fluorspar was first discovered and brought into production by Chad and Ray Fluorspar the Spor brothers informed as their mining areas were visited : -- ’ v Mk v ‘ ?
