and to celebrate Velma’s 80th birthday The event was held at the American Legion Hall with an early morning beginning breakfast followed by games singing visiting and a program presented by members of the family on which a scrapbook containing letters from all of the family and a beautiful story entitled “Grandma’s Place” written by Velma’s grandson Brian Attorney Jackson of St George Following the program dinner was served which included lots of good food and a beautiful birthday cake with ice cream Those joining this special were Velma’s children celebration and Reed Richards of Beverly Georgia Douglasville Shirley and Stott Duncan of Moab and family Charles and Marguerite Jackson of Sdt Lake City and two daughters Julie and Cindy and her family Joe and Sherry Jackson of St George and their famihis wife and two ly except Bradley children who reside in California Stephen and Pat Jackson of Sandy and David who resides in family except California Jim and Sherry Jackson of Layton and family They were host and hostess of the event A number of out of town friends of the grandchildren were welcomed into the family gathering including Gladys Jackson Warner who was an honored guest She is the oldest living member of the Jackson family Charles Jackson son of Charles and Marguerite Jackson and his wife and children were unable to attend as he is attending the School of Orthodontics in San Francisco There were 52 famithis lovely attending ly members celebration During the weekend of April 11 Matt and Lee Townsley enjoyed a vist with their son Bob his wife Debra Townsley and their family who stopped in on their way to Montana where they spent a week visiting Debra’s parents Frank and Pat Davies and other members of the family They stopped in Provo and visited Debra’s sister Lorie and her husband Another stop was when they reached Logan to visit Debra’s brother Tim Davies Other members of the family Rena of Salt Lake City and Lauri of Provo went to Montana to spend a week with sister Debra her husband and family and relatives who live in Montana Bob and Debra will stop again in Fillmore and spend the Easter weekend with Bob’s parents Matt and Lee Townsley Rossini the composer worked in bed under the blankets best iihrspf By Gwan Hunter Librarian Fillmore 29 South Utah 100 West Literacy Classes The Adult Literacy classes will begin regular meetings May 5 Registration is still open for all who wish to use this free service of the library The classes will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 7 pm unless the students wish to change to a more convenient time To register a person only has to come in and write his name and telephone number or box number Mrs Lenna Bushnell has consented to be consultant and administer any tests which are needed Most students will not have diagnostic tests because the majority of those registered are taking the class as a second language However the class is open to English speaking persons who wish to improve their reading skills Materials have been ordered and will be on hand by May 5 If you know of anyone who may not be informed of the class who would be interested in enrolling please pass the word along New Policies There was a slight error in last week’s column regarding the new extended loan period Books are now checked out for one month except for reserve books which are still one week The error came in the explanation which said if a book is checked out April 15 it would be stamped May would be stamped May 15 and begin- - ning on May 16 if it has not been returned a fine of 5 cents a day will be assessed This policy was put into effect April 15 All books now overdue or which will become overdue by the end of the month of April may be returned free of fines Fines will begin May I Please bring money to pay the fine It will be a lot of extra work for the librarians and also added expense to send a bill Families who check out ten to twenty books at a time should be sure to form the habit of bringing books back on time Shelves That Love Built A new list of names for the nameplates for the shelves has been turned in to the printer These will be placed on the shelves very soon There Memorial are still shelves available Day would be a good day to have a name plate placed on a shelf for a loved one or for yourself and family Art Program A small group enjoyed the Art program presented by Mr Doug Jolley at the library Monday April 13 The videos presented were from the Profiles Mr Ed in American Art Series a Utah sculptor was the Fraughton subject of the first film demonstrating the making of a piece of sculpture and Mr John Stobart marine painter was the demonstrator in the second film These short videos are a wonderful way to introduce your children to different mediums in the arts Whatever we know about we may sometime enjoy but if we never know about it we may miss some real enjoyment in our even our life’s work The last Jerry Freeman took his sons Robert and Addison to Delta where they got another son Cody and all went to dinner to celebrate Cody’s birthday This was dad and sons night out and lots of fun ’Grant and Arleen Robinson went to Salt Lake City March 31 to attend funeral services for her Uncle Earl Anderson His passing was a blessed relief for him after intense suffering He is a brother to Arlene’s mother Laura Atha She will miss her brother He has been very very much thoughtful of Laura and concerned for her Because he was a retired person he was able to take her to appointments etc Georgia Birch of Springville has been visiting her mother Veta Rasmussen and staying with her at night during the past two weeks She spends the days in Fillmore helping in the home of her Harold and Mae Cahoon The latter has been seriously ill in Fillmore Hospital and later at the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo Mae is able to be at home now and is improving each day with the TLC from her husband Mrs Arthur Allen took advantage of the spring break by going to Flagstaff They left April 16 to visit his Ida and Dr sister and John Smithson and their family Also other relatives of his parents the late John and Rozelpha Allen who lived in Arizona before moving to McCormick then to Flowell Arthur and Beth planned to stop in Cedar City to say and daughter “hi” to their Ron and LaDawn Berkey on their way to and coming back from Flagstaff Noma Jackson had a wonderful visit with her two granddaughters former Flowell residents and the famione of the girls when they came of ly last week Bonita Lewis and Twyla Lewis Hall and her husband Brover Hall and their two little sons spent two days with Grandma Noma She said she just loves to have them come and they had such a good time The girls are the daughters of the late Fay Jackson Bundy and Wayne Lewis Bonita Twyla and Grover live in Las Vegas as does their father Wayne a former Flowell resident SCHEDULE OF VISITING PHYSICIANS Easter hats paraded by Evelyn Mallet Beads lace and butterflies chickens and Pepsicola cans gaily decorated some of the most beautiful and comical hats created as yet by ladies who participated in this year’s Easter hat event The Pahvant Valley Senior Citizen Center held their 4th annual parade and dance Friday night April 10 to the beat of the Meadow Misfit Band A Hawaiian hula girl in the person of Joe Barkdull of Meadow danced (grass skirt and all) to the accompaniment of the band and Clem Utley of Flowell who sang about the hula dancer and her charms Four couples from the Salina Senior Citizen Center were present and performed some special steps that were unfamiliar to the rest of the dancers very expertly done and delightful to watch They danced two numbers for everyone Ten pies were given away to lucky couples that landed on the right numbers during two “pie dances” Distinguished judges this year were Nord Wes Heward Betty Labrum Brockbank and Louise Brunson Theirs was a difficult job because so many of the hats were superior in orginality and After much conscienworkmanship tious deliberation they chose as winners six of the eighteen that were entered and commented that they wished all could have won In the pretty hat division 1st place went to Leora Allen of Richfield 2nd place to Verna Nichols of Fillmore 3rd place to Thelda Martin of Salina In the 1st place was funny hat AFTERNOON writers and readers April 13 and 14 were exciting days in the Pres Millard Fillmore Library! The celebration of National Book Week was based on the national theme: A Nation of Readers— but Fillmore went one better Their theme was A Nation of Readers and Writers! Mr Kirby Giles’ classes in Fillmore Middle School have been writing and illustrating their own stories These stories were so much fun it was decided to feature them in the annual Story Festival Forty writers came and read their own stories to the chidlren of the Fillmore Elementary School and the The readers were divided into groups of two and sections of five groups for half a day at a time This meant that each person read his story fifteen times What a privilege it was to have the space in the new library to scatter five groups of children into the telling areas The areas were decorated to suggest places where it is fun to read Roy Johnson elementary teacher made a fireplace for one area Robyn Munro cut out a spring tree with blossoms and birds for the outdoor area Bonnie Baugh brought a cot with a quilted satin spread a bedside table and lamp for reading in the bedroom Mrs Wat- -
