am Real communication involves sending messages— and receiving messages demands a willunderstand another person’s ingness to point of view or way of looking at the world or maybe even unspoken desires and goals Use of words that fit the feelings is essential in the development of selfesteem One to achieving this is the use of ”1” statements rather than “you" statements that blame or induce shame or guilt Examples: “I feel angry” rather than “You make me angry" “I find it hard to talk when there’s so much noise" rather than “You're making too much noise" “I’m upset” rather than "You make me sick” Wise parents avoid use of messages such as: "1 want you so do as I say" to be “That’s a beautiful picture but your trees look like lollipops" Be aware of hidden messages in some verbal communication: “Let me do it for incompetent) “Don’t bother you” me” (You’re (You’re not important) “You’re in the 4th grade you should work" (You’re be able to do stupid) “You got only five A's next time bring up that B” (Be perfect You can never do enough to please me) It helps your child when you avoid or other belitthe use of tling expressions such as: (“Dummy" "Stupid” "Lazy" “Clumsy" etc) Pointing out others’ mistakes in such a way as to cause embarassment Asking questions to point out shortcomings of others Using sarcasm of ridicule Clever parents always look for ways of children to enhance the is the highest because form of approval Postmarks by Posl master Tom Hamilton Ah the phone Some days I’d like shoot that thing with a really big gun Most days however the calls bring your friendly voice to us asking for a zip code asking us to hold the mail asking us how much the letter will etc cost to Australia Sometimes the phone brings us complaints And sometimes well it should Being human we do make mistakes We don’t try our best to make mistakes though some people out in Delta land think that’s our main job Really mistakes are not our best effort They will happen though when each of us will handle in excell of 10000 pieces of mail each delivery day And when we make ‘em we want to fix 'em Let me give two examples of the kind of phone calls that we can and do receive At the end of May a customer called gave her name and address to us and wanted to know why the carrier kept leaving mail in their mail box for Jane Dow and asked us to please not do so in the future When asked the carrier about the incident she being fairly new to the route was just trying to deliver the mail It seems that the customer had at one time had someone to July 15 Utah Board of Nursing to meet in Fillmore 8 pm Fillmore Community Medical Center classroom July 19 Delta High School class of ’61 reunion deepest known depression in surface of the earth— Marianas ch— is nearly a mile deeper the world's highest mountain est is high I with a similar name living in the house a DOW The mail was addressed to almost the same address as the customer It’s a case of the mail being sorted as addressed and the carrier trying to deliver the mail The customer was quite polite and the problem was basically resolved When Jane Doe was contacted and asked to use her PO Box address she wasn’t very interested in doing so In spite of that we hope the problem of DOE mail is resolved for both customers Then two hours later came the storm This phone customer could be heard out in the customer lobby What thunder What lightning What poor manners Her complaint was the not $ substitute She was never good on time It was okay on Saturday when “nothing important EVER comes” She said that the carrier had just been there 10 minutes before at 4 pm and now it was too late to make the trip to town to pay her house payment and she would be charged a late fee I looked at the clock It said 3:45 pm We didn’t get to say much but we did try to explain that it was Tuesday the first day after Memorial Day weekend and that we had 3 days mail to deliver That got us only more cursing At the beginning of the call she gave us ner name out u turned out to not be a name of anyone in Delta We truly want to provide good service for the Delta mailing public The people working here are dedicated people But we do make mistakes When you call to ask about a mistake that has affected you personally I will try and resolve your problem in your favor but you must be willing to let me There goes that phone again Hello Delta Post Office Tom Middle America On thoughts and observations by Bob Thomas Some random thoughts and other absolutely brilliant observations after 10 weeks in town: This is a friendly place and wish I knew half the people who either honk or wave when I drive by The prime rib dinner with Texas toast at the City Cafe is the best meal in town for the money There’s no such thing as an unfriendly person working at the Triple Quick Spitey’s does excellent work on any repair (and I aspect of automotive ought to know because I’ve had every function aspect of mechanical go wrong with that “bomb” of mine in recent weeks) “Sam” Miles at Curley’s is among the most pleasant people I know And she’s pretty too Everybody at City Hall seems anxious to answer even the most trivial of your questions personally think they’re putting the traffic light up at the wrong intersection Nobody at Zion’s Bank views me as young enough to be called by my first name (It’s always Mr Thomas) How come there aren’t any Frank Sinatra love ballads on any of the juke boxes in town? Sue Phillips at The Hair Affair trims my prematurely blond locks exactly the way I like There are no grouchy faces in the Delta Rexall Drug Store Nancy Brush is among the most proficient and professional of waitresses Joy Morrison at the Chamber of Commerce is a nice lady Malachi Cavin could have been a if he hadn’t decided to philosopher become a welder The classiest motel room in the area must be Room 39 at the Rancher How come the price of gaslone jumped up nine cents a gallon in two weeks? Is anyone certain that summer has finally arrived? We have the best post office of any' town our size in America (And the help ain’t all that bad either) It’s a shame more people don't support the community swimming pool We have a fire department that really knows how to respond I wish someone would invite me on a tout of the Cheese Factory (I’ll bring the wine) Is our main thoroughfare among the widest in Utah? I still can’t get used to our street addresses — and I’m a qualified naval navigator When does Pot season begin? o' s Cofmiss the easy access to J fee Shop Can't we get that opened up again? What this town needs is an authenI get a yen for tic Chinese restaurant Oriental cuisine about twice a week Let’s hold a some weekend and go after the Guinness record of 283 feet Did you know Wang of the Nanjmg (China) Institute of Geology and Paiaentoiogy Academia Sinica is in town? Just about everybody around here is — except the redheads You can tell the real ranchhands walking the streets They’re the ones wearing baseball caps and running shoes (The ones in Stetson hats and Tony Lama boots are vacationing Greyhound bus drivers) There are a lot of good pool shooters in town How come we don’t have an official Town Historian? You can sec some fantastic summer sunsets in this part of the world — if you’re willing to stay up that late The Pizza House makes a great California Club sandwich And I wish had the franchise on their salads How come there’s no great in attending City Council meetings? We have a neat little library here Local beer drinkers are already talking football (Give me a break already!) It must be tough to be a Democrat in this county This is no place to open a business Is it just my imagination or are the police patrolling the streets more frequently of late? A stranger in Delta is a guy without a pickup — or access to one I’d like to own an in the hills about Oak City I’m in favor of keeping today's temperature (80 degrees) just the way it is for the next three months |
