Show Pane 2 Millard Count ISPS Ihurs Cmitmenta 1985 Bu I’m tired No that’s not correct am exhausted lose summer so try to use have just worn every minute and myself to a frazzle Also the days have been cooler and that makes me think of fall then inter so just buzz faster to try to get want done everything done that before the cold weather returns And get so frustrated because no matter how fast don’t get go want to do everything done that The rock garden is moving ahead but we still have a ways to go have had a couple of offers from people to dig sage brush on their property but so far haven’t had the time to toss in the shovel and get to digging We had overnight company from PI BIIMILR'S NOTK: We are getting snowed under with Letters to the Ldilor concerning the proposed Regional Correction Center in Hllmore It makes our days longer as we must juggle the limited spare we have and decide what should be published immediately and what must wait So now is the time to restate our policy on "Letters to the Ldilor" We encourage readers to excercise their right to state their opinions in letters August Won’t move to prison town it o this week Dennis’ Pennsylvania brother Tom and family arrived Monday and left Tuesday Hardly enough time to visit let alone see many of the sights of which Millard County has an abundance They enjoy the desert the mountains and commented on how blue our sky is From here they were headed for Riverton then Idaho on to Wyo Canada back to Custer country and back to Pennsylvania And they only have 2 weeks to make the loop a lot of driving We advised them to bypass the freeways and angle across the state to Vernal take time to see their museum and dinosaur quarry and then go on to Wyo have been My husband and looking for a place to move suitable to our life style - we thought perhaps offered that possibility Fillmore since he is a ranch and I have worked in manager several facets including the public and we have school system always lived rural We found your area to be most attractive and suitable not only of but us also for our two for the two married daughters and seven grandwho visit with us each children summer I have just returned back to our home in Weber County Utah from Fillmore with mixed feelings after reading the front page of the July 18 1985 issue of this newspaper which “The State Department stated of Corrections a proposal presented agreed upon by their department and the Fillmore Area Chamber of Commerce to place a regional criminal resource center justice here” My concern is based on the fact that Weber Utah County decided not to allow a prison facility to be built on the shores of the great Salt Lake and that was away from their major populated area The location Fillmore is considering (if I am correct) is very close to your city and your schools and in my opinion could not help but bring some negative reactions to growth in your area as well as the dangers involved Having a prison in one’s has never enhanced any community I have ever heard of and we have lived in California Nevada Colorado and Utah The newspaper article said nothing regards bringing this proposal to a vote by the people of Millard County and yet Fillmore is the county seat and it’s my understanding that the children are brought in from all the surrounding communities to attend school in Fillmore therefore would those people not be concerned and involved with such a decision based on the major If the Dept of economic factor had approached Corrections the and put the County Commissioners facility out away from your city schools and towns it would seem more reasonable than for the Chamber of Commerce to ask that Fillmore become a possible site for a center of this type We are not residents of your county or city - and maybe never will be - but we are considering it and will return to look again at the end of August and hope this has been resolved to everyone’s satisfaction However as we have upwards of 15000 readers we obviously do not have the space to publish letters from all readers on a regular basis so we reserve the right to edit reject and limit letters Letters have an excellent chance of being published if they are short too the point and factual Anyone who feels that they have more to say than we have the room for may buy space at the regular advertising rate “The Gypsies don’t come any more’’ In the early days of Delta the gypsies came every summer We never knew where they came from or where they went They came in their painted wagons pulled by horses with decorated harnesses and camped on the outskirts of town They would stay a week or two and then move on Their wagons wre a forerunner of our modern campers They were built like a box on wheels and painted with flowers and intricate designs of birds and scrolls bright designs on a black There was a door on the background side The gypsy women and children wore bright colors and long skirts and skimmed the ground as they worked around their campfire never did get a chance to see inside of one of their houses We were especially warned not to get too close and there was a rumor among the children that “you could get kidnapped” if you got too close The wagons contained ail they had their beds cupboards cooking utensils etc They would come to our house and want to trade a "blessing” on our home to “always be happy” a "blessing” on our father’s corn from our garden or flour or homemade butter They were always appreciative and thanked us The gypsy men would come and ask if we had anything that needed to be repaired They could solder a pan put a new handle on a skillet or whatever needed to be fixed They knew how to repair everything Things were unsophisticated then fixing was not hard The gypsies were always a mystery to us We never went any place but to school and had to live in houses We would stand and stare at the colorful houses on wheels and envy those who lived there and could travel to the far and exciting places of the land The gypsy children would stand and stare at the native children They didn’t stay long enough to get acquainted and learn to play together We loved the gypsies They were a mystery We didn’t know where they came from or where they went Now we wonder where have they gone? by Mary Henrie Sincerely Idona M Taylor 2436 No 4350 West Ogden Utah 84404 SUPER letter to the editor which gives my personal viewpoints of the Regional Criminal Justice Resource Center issue Several things disturb me deeply that are happening in our communOne is the division of people ity have admired very much whom since moving back to Fillmore I will never condemn those who hear a different drummer from myself That is the great democratic process by which we all want to live The most disturbing aspect is the in the interest lack of human have heard rehabilitative process in public the word “trash” used with reference to families who would potentially move here to assume a few of the positions that would be available from the proposed 25 jobs do not want myself numbered among the self righteous who call other people “trash” To condemn informed is not without being Christian behavior do number myself among those who are working diligently to help a diminishing economy and who have an interest in trying to rehabilitate P $595 50 ft With regards to the proposal for the Regional Diagnostic Center here in Fillmore am becoming very that many people are concerned judging before they take a good long look at all the facts surrounding it Working with the court system in the aspect that I do please take my word for the simple fact that some of those ideas and "facts” that are being spread around are not quite true see in court are not bad Those people tor the most part They are a few that have made a mistake in their lives for one reason or another and are now ready to pay for that mistake like it live in Fillmore because want it to grow and to here and prosper so that my children and may be able to live grandchildren here and work here in the future I also hope that there will be good jobs lor them so they can available support their families am guilty at times of judging too fast and also of not looking at all the facts sometimes but in this instance feel that the economy of Fillmore can only prosper with a facility of this type under the right circumstances If the contract drawn up between the county the city and the state is with the input of an advisory board as is feel that this will promised definitely benefit our town Whether or not this proposal comes to pass I can only hope that all of us will open our eyes and see what is around us hope that we can maintain the pride we have in our community but at the same time realize that we are not now immune to crimes here nor will we be in the future Some of the things that are now going on we need to face and we also need to work on Perhaps working together would be of more benefit to all of us than working apart I respect the right of each individual to have a view and an opinion and do not begrudge that of anybody But please let it be an informed one is small by jail present comparison to any standards One issue which has not been publicly discussed' but one which I will personally continue to work for is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program as part of the proposed facility one that could be used by the A crime can be community committed with intent but it can also be committed without intent under the influence of drugs and alcohol really believe it accounts for a large percentage of crimes committed and for many accidents The fatal problem could be dealt with at a level of rehabilitation before a crime is or an accident occurs committed Few of us can say that our lives have never or never will be touched by alcohol drugs or crime We should all share the responsibility for our fellow men I also will personally work for a bememorandum of understanding tween the county and the state with the right for the county to remove or refuse a problematic inmate and for other measures of safety that I feel are necessary to the community The issue will be settled in the coming weeks but please let us all remember that we are dealing with human taking out the the $1195 80 ft TANK SPRAYER 2 gal Plastic or & L READY-M- IX High-Fle- x
