ween festival on Monday October 29 The event will begin with a family Department Delta Senior Citizens Travel 15 Oct the sky had a few thunderheads floating around and a sky of snow had fallen here and there but it did not dampen the spirits of this group as they boarded the bus for a day of fun The destination was Fairview and a scenic drive Everyone was dressed with sweaters and coats (prepared for the weather) But the bus was warm and cozy As it rolled along laughter and song filled the air One favorite song everyone likes to sing is “When We get Together” You should have heard the The “Outhouse” Some were called outhouses some privies we called ours the castle It was at the end of a row of black currant bushes Just far enough from the house and close enough to be convenient It was a long way on a dark night with all kinds of enemies hiding in the currant bushes There was always a well worn path The first one we had faced the house It was better if the door faced the field for different reasons We always kept ashes in a box in the corner with a can in the box to scoop ashes It worked on the same principle as flushing One day I took the ashes out of the long ashbox in the old Monarch and dumped them in the box Later I happened to look out the kitchen window and saw flames pouring out the door the cracks and the moon near the roof of the outhouse I hurried and pumped some buckets of water and threw them into the fire and saved the important It always showed the scars building and we always came out a little blacker then we went in We moved and had an outhouse that had been papered with old newspapers to help keep out the cold winds You could sit there and read the same old yellowed newspaper and advertisments or you could read last year’s catalog from Sears and Roebuck which was standard The door had a supply leather strap from an old harness that we fastened on a nail to insure privacy It was part of life If you built a new house you kept the scrap lumber and built a new outhouse When it became necessary a new hole was dug and the building moved The old spot was a good place to plant a tree as there was always a depression in the soil that sured a supply of water and the tree grew big and tall There was always danger of black widow spiders We were warned If the danger was too bad we would burn some crumpled old newspaper around Thanks to supporters We want coaches to thank the referees players timekeepers linesmen Delta High School and parents who made the Delta Area Little League Football Program a success for 1984 We also thank see any deer but we did see a few hunters staking out their spots As we traveled through this area of hills and mountains we were thrilled with the beauty of the fall colors of yellow orange and red Up high on the mountains the leaves had fallen leaving the trees bare but standing tall reaching for the sky The stately pines were ever so beautiful We all selected our Christmas tree Fairview’s scenic under the seat In or near 1936 the government under President Franklin D Roosevelt had a WPA project and built new privies for whomever needed one We were patriotic and bought one I think they cost $1000 They were all alike all business no moons or stars They were nice with lid and ventilating pipe and cement floor There was a “privy gang” which came and put it up for drive by Melva Shields
