drainage at the time of planting with the use of a gravel layer in the bottom of the hole or a better method is a dry well as shown in the drains Dry wells allow excess water to accumulate in the rock until it can soak away The soil placed around the root ball should also be light and provide easy water penetration A good medium would be 50 native soil and 50 organic matter The hole should be at least 2 to 3 times larger than the root ball Question: My new trees are showing brown dry edges on the leaves The problem starts on the lower leaves and moves to the younger leaves at the top of the tree Answer: Several physical problems will cause the above problem (I) lack of water (2) excess water which will destroy the root hairs and prevent water being absorbed at a rate sufficient to keep the leaves alive (3) however the most common cause of leaf scorch in the Delta area this year is SALT (white alkali table salt or NaCl) Salt has accumulated in the soil over the geologic ages from the of the water from the evaporation Sevier River Salt destroys the soils ability to let water penetrate and leach the salt from the soil Water can stand on salty soils for days and the ground below the surface may remain dry Salt also accumulates in the edges of the leaves and damages the tissues Question: Can trees and shrubs planted in the fall? be Fall is an excellent time for planting of containerized plants and establishment of new plants from seed Roots continue to grow during cool weather without top growth thus when spring comes the roots are better able to sustain plant growth through the summer Trees and shrubs can be planted any time until the soil becomes too wet or frozen to dig Fall is also a good time to start lawns Note: The pool is always looking for fun things to do Jackie hopes to run a water polo on intertubes league here at the West Millard Community Swimming Pool this winter Water polo on is a wild fun sport and leagues are held up north periodically To play the sport there are seven people on a team and innertubes are furnished by the pool All playing is done while sitting in the tube and if a person is dumped out heshe cannot touch the ball until heshe is back in the tube You play innertube water polo like regular water polo with goals at each end of the pool defended by a goalie each goal scored is worth one point The playing gets wild and furious and people who play not only have fun but get lots of exercise Don’t forget the special days that the pool holds every week On Monday nights from 5:00 to 9:00 pm is Famiadmission for each family ly Night who comes to swim is only $350 no On matter how large the family Wednesday evenings is Bring A Friend Night from 5:00 to 9:00 pm for each paid admission one friend gets in free this motor skills and communication between mother and child This special class is for tiny tots of ages 2 Improved drainage is the best solution Organic matter is one of the best means of opening the soil to allow drainage Leaves ground bark rotted hay enand peat silage straw or manures moss are all excellent Organic matter causes soil particles to adhere to each other allowing water to pass through and salt to be leached from the soil Another good method for trees and Although vitamin and mineral ads would have you believe that everyone needs more iron getting it from pills may not be necessary formulated blends of protein Carefully that dogs need for continuing good health For instance spaghetti sauce is acidic because of the tomatoes Cooking the sauce in an iron pot will yield almost 30 times more iron than if it were cooked in a stainless steel or coated pan Mahoney says Eggs gravy rice potatoes and beans will all benefit from iron cookware He says nearly all foods can yield more iron simply by being prepared in iron cookware “Another guideline is to serve high iron content foods (spinach beans beef whole grains) with a food high in vitamin C andor acidity These combinations make it easier for the body to use the iron available in the foods” Mahoney says Foods such as an orange grapefruit tomato or some cabbage will help Saurkraut is enhance iron retention doubly helpful because it is high in acid and vitamin C he says Mahoney says some fairly common meals such as hamburger string beans and mashed potatoes are high in iron This single meal would yield about half the iron an adult male needs each day A serving of saurkraut and sausage yields 100 percent of the male’s daily iron needs “Pregnant women young children diets may and persons on need extra iron prescribed by their doctors For most of us though our iron needs can be easily met through proper cooking and food selection” Mahoney Carnation Mix Classic 40 lbs Carnation Dinners Country Dinners
