Show Page 6 Millard County USPS Thurs Sept 13 1984 Delta High’s award winning newspaper Nine shine for ‘‘It’s a showcase of the most outstanding musicians in the state of Utah” said Mr David Wankier regarding the Band Chorus and Orchestra program In all nine music students from Delta High will be participating in the Music program sponsored by the Utah Music Educators Association Out of 12 Accapella students who applied eight were received as members of this elite 500 voice group Varsity volleyball team plays alumni Bump set and spike! If that sounds like a to you you’re right and that’s exactly what happened at the varsity vs alumni game played Thursday September 6 at the Delta High School Gym In the first game the alumni team was looking good leading the varsity The varsity wasn’t going to let them take advantage so they had a turn around winning the first game with a score of In the second game the alumni blocked and hit well taking the lead and over the varsity winning Winning one game and losing the other the varsity was ready to win the third game They were psyched up and pulling together but the alumni wasn’t going to give in that easily The score was varsity’s serve The ball was volleyed back and forth until Wendy Stanworth spiked the ball Kim Haag making the score now then served the ball for the game point and the varsity won would normally be the final Swimmers prep for season Swim team has started with a splash Last Tuesday swimmers were introduced to the new coaches and had their goals rules and expectations explained to them This year’s coach is Tom Hamilton and his assistant is Dennis Armstrong Both coaches work in the post office and have volunteered their time Returning members of the team inNatalie Webb clude Jay Paulman Sean Lindsay and Sherri Bennett Natasha Dolie Anyone wishing to join the swim team should come to practice after school ready to swim A pass must be purchased for the cost of admission This is a minimal cost considering the pool closes its doors to the public for the swimteam Practice generally ends between 5:00 and 5:30 and prospective members should be able to swim at least one type of stroke fairly well Both coaches’ expectations are high and plan on building up to very rigorous workouts They are going to push hard Practices will become more and more strenuous as time goes on A high emphasis will be placed on technique and gaining better times will always be the major goal Coach Hamilton will put up with no goofing off He is going to be strict and maintain a disciplined team with the purpose of keeping workouts orderly and as smooth as possible DHS game but they decided to play a fourth in which the alumni won With both teams winning two out of four spectator Vance Terrell said “I thought that both teams played exceptionally Coach well” Wiscombe said “It was a really good experience because the alumni team blocked and hit well I don’t think we will play a team that was as tall as the players on the alumni so it was a good experience” Darcy Peacock one of the team captains said “It was a fun game and a good practice I feel that the McDermaid Johnson team Five reap honors at yearbook camp During the month of August five students from Delta High School took a week off from their busy schedules to attend the Yearbook West yearbook camp at USU in Logan Utah Katie Young Debbie Rose Cristie Smith Jennifer Lewis and Peggy Hansen were among those who spent the week learning new ideas about compiling a yearbook and comparing notes with other from parts of students journalism Utah Idaho and Montana Jennifer Lewis said "The kids from the other states were so crazy and they are what made the camp so much fun” The students attended four classes a day learning things such as how to design layouts write body copy take use graphic elements and photographs write captions “This was really a good learning opportunity for me” said Cristie Smith in yearbook “I’ve never participated before and I learned a lot things that will be helpful to me when we start to put our yearbook together” Other activities also in the schedule allowed the students to relax and get to know each other These included a tour of the USU campus a volleyball a trip to the waterslide a tourament barbeque in the canyon a talent show and best of all a dance under the stars At the end of the week a contest was held in which every student was enThere were couraged to participate awards for the best layout design best caption and the best written body copy These awards were presented the last day at a brunch held to commemorate the funfilled week Delta came home with a bundle of awards with Jennifer Lewis receiving first second and third place awards Debbie Rose won a second and Peggy Hansen took home two third places Peggy Hansen said “It was a lot different from what I expected it to be The dorms were rowdy and a switch from what I’m used to but it was a really fun camp once you got into the swing of things” Debators break into finals at Camp Speech and Debate Camp was held Of the five at SUSC on July students from Delta who went John Escott said “It was a terrific learning All of our people parexperience ticipating in individual events and of our debators broke into finals No other school accomplished this” Tim Hurst and Joel Sannes took fourth in varsity debate Jenny Killian and her partner from Arizona took third in novice debate The schools varied from 1A to 4A and came from different states such as Arizona Colorado Nevada and New Mexico “We established a name for Delta schools who among the were at the camp” said Tim Hurst Students had classes every day from 8:30 AM - 9:30 PM for the Tirst week The mornings were performance songs Instramentalists applying for Band had to audition for judges last year Sean Lindsay performed his audition for the Cedar saxophone City director at State Solo and Ensemble in Woods Cross He received word of his acceptance a week before school let out last year “The music won’t be too tough The hard part is going to be all of the practicing” said Sean On September 29 and October 3 the regional practices will be held without the conductors premier Arnold Gabriel conductor of the Air Force Band and Craig Jessop conductor of the Air Force Singing Sergeants will be this year’s guest directors Not until October 10 will the conductors and musicians come together This gives the group three days to put the “polish” in their pieces These practices will be held at South High in
