Sure, delightful and twisted aren't words that usually go together when describing a horror film, or any thriller for that matter, but Pee le's film is exactly that for a reason. Amid the harrowing plot wherein a middle-clas- s family vacationing in Santa Cruz defends themselves against their murderous doppelgangers, are little snippets of humor. It isn't the laugh out loud sort of humor though I did exactly that at least twice but the kind of humor meant to lighten an otherwise dark premise. A scene I found particularly ironic is where Abraham, played by Winston Duke, is fighting off his twin on a boat he had purchased earlier in the film. The boat has a quirk where the engine stalls, and earlier in the film, Abraham is seen hitting the engine to try and get it to start again. Ironi- fying prospect when you think about it: the idea that there is a copy of you somewhere underground, waiting for the day they get to murder you and take over your life. Additionally, the film tackles the psychological aspect of struggling with your own fears and past traumas through Adalaide, who is confronted with her traumatic past when her family arrives in Santa Cruz, the very place she had a traumatizing experience. Only, her fear is very real and has her face, her voice and its own dark history. There isn't a lot to dislike about "Us" except that when we first meet Adalaide as a grown up with a family, it's hard to think of the film as a hor cally, his double does the same thing, providing Abraham the moment he needs to get the upper hand. I found the peppering of humorous moments entertaining, but that isn't what I appreciated the most in this film. It is the unconventionality of the film itself. By unconventional I mean that Pee le takes the idea of "man versus himself" and makes it literal instead of metaphorical as most films would be. In "Us," Abraham, his wife Adelaide, and their children are faced with living, breathing "shadow" versions of themselves who not only want to kill them but want to replace them. It's a tern .41,, the new "Us," ror and, with a few exceptions, the cinematography was a little simplistic. I would have liked to see a little more creativity with the camera work to accentuate the "off kilter" theme of the film instead of solely relying on story, scenes and lighting to drive that feel home. The lack of disjunction in the shots and editing took away from the horror element just enough that I didn't find it scary. Just really twisted, which is still an entertaining thing in my book. If you're looking for something off the beaten path of horror and psychological thrillers, "Us" is exactly that and as such is an enjoyable, entertaining piece of cinema worth seeing. While these two love birds have been able to find love (at least for now), most contestants of the show have not been so lucky. This brings up the question, is "The BaChelor" a realistic way for people to find love? Or is it setting unrealistic expectations of what love is? And if it is unrealistic, why are we addicted to it? If you aren't familiar with the show, and even if you are, let me give you a glimpse of what it is. There are 25 to 30 women (or men, when it's "The Bachelorette") vying over the attention and love of a single man (or woman, when it's "The Bachelorette") and are expected to be engaged by the end of an eight week period, with only seeing each other once or twice a week. Any normal thinking person would agree this sounds absurd, unrealistic and hon : , . ,t,,,,,, , ' . . 1 , 't, i , , T , 1 i ' ' , ' ,,,,, , , ..- ,.,, ' 4..,' ',4.. Noelle Spencer said shows like "The Bachelor" are not a pragmatic example of love.: estly, impossible. There is no possible way for two people to be ready for marriage after such little interaction and such little time. Yet, the show still convinces its audience this is indeed "true love." "The Bachelor" uses p techniques such as destinadates, exotic tions, and a cliche fairytale engagement that every man or women dreams of having to create this image of what over-theto- love is. Let me be the first to say, love is not all making out on the beach or champagne. Love is found through time spent with one another, getting to know one another, and accepting each other no matter what. If love is not found on reality television, then why is everyone still obsessing over this show? We have loved fairytale stories from the time we were young, and this show is just an adult version of a fairytale. Although we may know fairytale endings are indeed just a fairytale and the truth of fairytales is that they couldn't possibly happen, we still enjoy the idea that someone else is capable of having that ending. The show brings out emotions such as sadness, happi ness, heartbreak and anger, which are feelings everyone.- -: can relate to. It is also believed that people watch the show to get tips on their own sex lives, romantic relationships, how to date, etc. "The Bachelor" is enter- taining and if anything, you won't regret watching an entire season to see if two people do or do not end up spending the rest of their lives together. |
