Ns 1 BY JONN HOLLAND trippyjedi When the familiar piano strains which introduce the film, "Halloween" permeated the air 'of the theater, I thought: "Here we go. The sequel this franchise deserves. A showdown forty years overdue." It's true though previous "Halloween" films were either attempts to Iv" !I, mystify the relationship between Laurie Saunders and Michael Myers even creating the idea or they are siblings in competition with the popularity of "Friday the 13th"and "A Nightmare on Elm Street." "Halloween" uses the passing of forty years to its advantage. By picking up the story four decades later, it gives the film a sense of realness not normally seen in a horror film. The reality being that murder survivors often fear the return of the killer. Laurie Saunders is no exception to that. Estranged from her daughter and granddaughter due to her neurotic need to prepare for the inevitable ;ri 711 ri ff4 r,,,,,, Is , return of Myers, she appears to be a woman driven mad by the trauma she experienced. Yet, she isn't, because Myers does return, yet leaving a trail of blood in his wake. There were a lot of elements I enjoyed in this newer "Halloween" film. The first being nods to the original film and the era it was filmed in throughout the movie. In one scene, Laurie's granddaughter Allyson, attends the same high school, sits at the same desk and listens to the same lesson her grandmother does in the first "Halloween." Another scene, where Myers enters the home of a victim shows a classic '70s children's show play 7N CIPit-1,07- prrk4 1.-- ,P Lea 0 characters and the world they live in. The acting is worlds better than in the classic film and the camera work is steady and deliberate instead of using the handheld shakiness of current horror films. Finally, "Halloween" is not just another horror film with a supernatural villain. Instead, it is the story of two individuals, one forever living in darkness, trapped by the evil that drives him and the other fighting to stay in the light and the escape the darkness invading her life. A story that has cemented itself in the memories of those who experienced it 40 years ago is giving them the ending they have long waited for. lar emphasizes this fact very well. In this scene, Allyson and her friend Oscar are cutting through a neighbor's back yard on the way to Allyson's home This yard is equipped with motion sensor lights which illuminate the yard, then turn off after a few moments. Left alone, Oscar finds himself in the presence of Myers who uses the timing of the lights turning off and on to appear as though he is a hallucination, there one moment, gone the next, only to ,appear again closer than he was before, and Oscar discovers just how real Myers is. "Halloween" stays true to the original film in the authenticity of the ing on the television. This is an homage to the year John Carpenter's original film was released, reminding those in the audience who were alive in 1978 just how long it has been since then. In a way, the replicated scenes from the original and the throwbacks to the late '70s serve as a contrast between the world as it was two years prior to the 1980s and the world today, with cell phones and the internet. Another aspect of the film I enjoyed was its superb use of light and shadow. The absence of light becomes a tool for Myers as he commits his evil and merciless acts of murder. Anyone can invest in stocks, but how can you take advantage of the longterm potential of the stock market? How much money do you need to start? As an investor, you have three options: you can hire someone to manage your portfolio, manage your own portfolio, or passively invest in an index (or pursue some combination of the three). This article will focus on the latter two options. The first thing you need to start investing in stocks is a bank account. There are many different options when it comes to opening a checking account, and most banks and credit unions have special promotions for opening a new account. Conducting a simple Google search for local bank promotions or "interviewing" the various financial institutions around town should help you find a bank with attractive incentives, low (or no) fees and high-quali- I ty small minimum balances. Once you've funded a checking account, you can link it to a handful of brokers and other investment institutions that will help you deploy your savings. A favorite amongst college students and young professionals is Robinhood, a website and application you can download on either IOS or Android. Robinhood has no minimum balance requirements and allows users to buy and sell American stocks without commission. As the only "free" (they make money on margin and idle cash) broker, Robinhood is a great app for new investors with small savings to buy and sell individual stocks. Robinhood is constantly launching new features, recently giving users access to a few large international stocks like Alibaba, Adidas and Tencent. For the enterprising investor who wants access to a larger pool of global investment options, Interactive Brokers ("TB") offers a solid product. With access to 24 stock exchanges around the world and low commissions, TB is one of the highest-rate- d brokers in the US. The minimum to open an individual account is normally $10,000, but adults under the age of 25 can open an account with $3,000. While IB offers a good product, it's not advised for beginners. For those who want to take advantage of the long-tercompounding potential of stocks without m having to do any work, Vanguard is a wonderful option. As the largest index fund company in the world, Vanguard allows investors to "passively" invest in stocks that track some sort of index. For example, the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index (VTSMX) owns 3,680 American companies, giving investors exposure to a large portion of the US stock market (VTSMX has a minimum investment of $3,000). By making consistent contributions to a diversified index fund like the one discussed above, investors are likely to do well over the long-teras stocks continue to add value and build wealth. There are many investment companies other than those listed above, all offering similar features and competing products. Investors would do well to research Fidelity, Schwab, and others to determine which fit their individual needs best. The chief importance when choosing a broker should be low fees and acceptable features for your personal use. Once you've opened and funded your account, you can begin investing either actively or passively and refining your investment process to meet your personal financial goals. There is no investment strategy, but knowing the basics of .- ,,,, 1,. 14, ''' 41 3 ' .7,,:4,:' :. - 7 '.-- - 01 orik.MA'., ', evV. :::., ::,,. We as a nation must not put political foes in crosshairs or tolerate rhetoric that pushes people like Sayoc to threaten us with bombs. And we must demand that President Donald Trump, who started Friday tweeting that "this 'bomb' stuff" was interfering with Republican momentum heading into the midterms, rise above his partisanship. That afternoon, while in the White House, the president frighteningly joined his audience's call to "Lock him up," regarding billionaire philanthropist and Democratic donor long-terGeorge Soros, a target should benefit the of one of the devices investing individual investor. Sayoc allegedly sent from m buy-and-ho- ld Florida. Sandwiched between Trump's disturbing statements was a moment of calm, when the president said the right things as he read from a TelePrompTer. Disappointingly, he soon returned to the fiery rheto1 ric that fans the flames of discontent. Such bombast can't be divorced from the alleged actions of Sayoc, who officials say sent more than a dozen explosive devices to key Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as other Trump critics. A van used by Sayoc was covered with stickers and included a photo of a target superimposed on Clinton's face. Sayoc's social media was full of corn pro-Tru- pro-Tru- - ments and attacks on some who were sent bombs. This wasn't fake or a plot from the left, despite previous claims to the contrary. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Sayoc "appears to be a partisan." FBI Director Christopher Wray confirmed the bombs were "not hoax devices." Thanks to the quick, skilled work of law enforcement, we feel some relief in the capture of a suspect. But there's little relief in knowing that if the vile debasement of our discourse continues, others might turn talk into action. "We must never allow political violence to take root in America," Trump said Friday. But the roots are there, and Trump waters them regularly. On this, our president won't lead. So, we as a nation must. (c)2018 Newsday. V |
