Show invites students to learn, commit to more Penn State frat reaches settlement with parents whose son died in hazing ritual inside frat house FBI KatDixieSun On Thursday, Dixie State University held an FBI session, which entertained and informed a full room of students and community members. Special Agent Benton Larsen said the job is mainly paperwork, which can last for days and most people do not realis not just ize that Lish the action. about Harris, associate professor of criminal justice, said the FBI have large amounts of people wanting to join. Harris said more and more people are interested now because of what people watch on TV.and hear about with real cases. Larsen said the students must make themselves stand out from their peers because the FBI only chooses the people. Out of 60 interviews, the FBI can only hire 10 applicants, Larsen said. "You just can't say 'oh, I'll join the FBI'. It doesn't work that the-jo- . best-qualifi- . vices," Harris said. "The positions in federal law are really competitive." Anna Thomson, a sophomore integrated studies in criminal justice and psychology major from Kaysville, said the session was helpful; she came to the event to get to know a field of work that she is interested in. She wasn't deterred by what Larsen said about the job being competitive, she said. "There are people who have spent hours and money to go to school and time getting the training it takes to protect our country and that's not easy," Thomson said. "So, it shouldn't be easy to get in either." Larsen said he came to tell students about different jobs and programs within the FBI. Larsen said there is a 10- week internship with the FBI in the summer, and students can apply online. The internship is for US citizens only. If you have any questions or concerns when applying, contact recruitingfbi. gov. Applications are due other people or else they won't be chosen. Knowing a different language can help as well, especially if the language is not common, Larsen said. "In that seven-yea- r time, it has become the largest major on campus." More than 20 fraternity members have been charged with hazing and other offenses; three have pleaded guilty. "That the Piazza family has had to endure the loss of their beloved son and brother, Tim, remains one of the greatest disappointments and darkest hours in Beta's history," S. Wayne Kay, general secretary and chairman of the national Beta Theta Pi Foundation board, said in the statement. "It is heartbreaking and numbing to know our former members let Tim and his family down in such a tragic way." The Piazzas also have a claim against Penn State; no negotiations have taken place, Kline said. They also plan to pursue claims against individual fraternity members who they believe were involved in their son's death, he said. The plan agreed to as part of the settlement is a "binding, legally enforceable agreement," Kline said. The settlement also included a monetary payment, according to Tom Kline, the lawyer for Jim and Evelyn Piazza. But neither the terms nor the amount were released by Kline or Justin Warren, a spokesman for the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. "We have mutually decided not to release the amount, which is a private matter," Kline said. Penn State permanently revoked recognition of the fraternity after Piazza's death, but the house remains under the jurisdiction of the organiza- tion's housing corporation. In addition, the agreement requires the national fraternity to revoke recognition of a local chapter if the host university takes that action. In the past, national fraternities have maintained recognition of groups Penn State has sanctioned. The plan also calls for better education and training of members, and encourages local chapter houses to have a live-i- n adviser and security cameras on the premises. The settlement, Kline said, "is an outgrowth of the determined dedication by Jim and Evelyn Piazza to the cause of preventing hazing injury and death in Greek life in the future."
