This is what the American Association of University Professors calls Academic Freedom. Adjunct Professor Keith Kelsch said professors have two responsibilities when it comes to inviting ideas in the classroom. ",They have to invite ideas from the student, and they have to invite ideas outside the classroom," Kelsch said. He said professors pushing their own agendas is destructive culturally and intellectually and is not in the spirit of a liberal education. "A really liberal education in a classical sense is a professor who asks questions," he said "They don't force feed ideas on the student, they ask constant them questions questions to get them thinking, so the student has a solid foundation of mindset, so they know what it's like to think for themselves, stand for themselves and have a L JAN.10 self-startin- g, mind." Kelsch said students can prepare themselves to be informed and responsible citizens. This is because professors need to present some form of structure in their classes, or they risk going completely off topic and per the definition of Academic Freedom: "Teachers are entitled to freedom in the classroom in discussing their subject, but they should be careful not to introduce into their teaching controversial matter which has no relation to their subject. It is a concern because it contradicts the belief that universities are institutions where students can improve their critical thinking skills through open debate and discussion with peers and professors in a presumably unbiased environment. But Alice isn't alone in her fascination with Cassie: Frank Ashcroft, a patient of Alice's, has also taken an interest. While his doctors think he's comatose, he has locked-i- n syndrome, awake and able to hear everything around him, but unable to communicate at all. As Alice's investigation continues, the only thing clear is Cassie's life isn't nearly as picture-perfeas her family says it is. Trapped in his own mind, Frank has a warning to give Alice that Cassie isn't safe, and she's running out of time. Elgar brings these three characters together in an unlikely manner, creating a psychological thriller that is every bit as good as many of her peers in the thriller writing genre. She said: "If I have a professor telling me 'this is the only way that you can do this,' then I'm going to be like, no I'm smart. I've been dancing for 18 years; I think I know what will work on my body versus what worked on you back when you danced 20 years ago." The effect of inviting students to openly discuss topics and express their opinions is evident in the experiences they have in those classrooms In a Washington Post article titled "Professors Are Losing Their Freedom of Expression," Howard Gillman and Erwin Chemerinsky outline instances where professors were either fired from their positions or had offers taken away from them because they expressed views that were seen as controversial and not in keeping with a particular university's own political point of view. The education received at a university is not for the professor's advancement, but for the students to become true professionals. By inviting ideas and not pushing individual agendas, professors can ensure that college students will obtain the education they are stilling for. L- r BY GEORGE M. Although the days are getting longerthere had to be some good news in therethese are the days of hunkering down with a hot beverage of choice (no judgments as to what) , your favorite woobie and TV. And let's face it, American television audiences (including yours truly) have morphed into a group that appreciates quality and values watching how they want, when they want and where they want. Sometimes that means taking it slow. At other times, depending on your schedule, that means investing two days into getting through up to 13 episodes of a TV series. Some of the shows listed below qualify as bingeable because either their respective outlets released every episode at once or there are a sufficient number of episodes to provide enough of a taste to satisfy: "The Deuce" (HBO): James Franco stars as twins Vinnie and Fran 1de, brothers working their way up the business side of Times Square's sex industry in the '70s. Produced by David Simon (The Wire), the subject matter can be tough to take, but it's hard to forget. "Godless" (Netflix): A western? Some will appreciate that fact alone. The cast includes Jeff Daniels and Michelle Dockery. "Marvel's The Punisher" (Neff lix): This series isn't C ill superhero ,11 fare. Jon Bemthars former combat Marine is tortured by ghosts of his murdered family and what he could have done to prevent their deaths. He ends up seeking justice. Briarme Burt, a freshman business administration major from Layton, relates an experience she had in English class last semester. She said her professor allowed the class to write a research paper based on concepts in their individual fields of study. "That makes it to where I want to be a part of that essay. I actually want to learn about that essay because it's going to help me in the future," Burt said. The issue at hand may not rest solely on the professors, but instead on the administrators who decide how and what professors can teach or even say on or off campus. g ) ( C |
