Adding more responsibility and activities to your proverbial plate seems like a counterproductive thing to do when trying to earn better grades and make your mother proud in the process. However, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, students who are more involved outside of class are 20 percent more likely to get better grades. As a member of student government and a writer for the Dixie Sun News, I time-consumi- but at least those grades from last semester can now be I wiped clean. i The spring semester comes with a new start, much like the new year does. Many people make goals to try and improve themselves. Unfortunately, a lot of New Year's goals end up unsuccessful. For students heading back to Dixie State University hoping this will bring with it a higher GPA, there is a way arrig- :41w1 ',Lao have a lot of responsibilities that can be time consuming. My original line of thinking had me believing that this would negatively affect my grades. Just the opposite occurred. Being involved with student government and with the Dixie Sun News actually elevated my GPA and my capacity to succeed. This happened to me for three reasons. The first reason involvement leads to better grades is that it gives students the tools to succeed. A lot of times activities have deadlines and goals. Students get the opportunity to work with others to accomplish the task at hand and do so as efficiently as possible. By working with deadlines and goals outside of classes, they are able to do so more efficiently when campus. Coming back to school after - lir tter gra es - IPA extra-curricul- (- in school. With so many deadlines and classes and assignments due in each class, the ability to effectively balance and manage those tasks is essential. When Students willingly give up some of their free time to ar extra-curricul- - DIXIESUNNEINS.COM involve- ar ment, it then eliminates the amount of time that can be wasted, thus sculpts the student into a work of art that ultimately results in good grades. The third reason is when you surround yourself with similar and moti- vated people, it cultivates a responsible and positive culture. Forbes.com said success comes easier when surrounding yourself with the right people. It actually becomes easier to succeed when you are constantly surrounded by successful and hard working students. What this whole concept boils down to is that getting good grades is tough. It requires discipline, passion and dedication: Although those tools are essential, they may not be natural tendencies. So, getting out the comfort zone, becoming involved in something bigger than yourself, and being sur- - -rounded by motivated and hard working students will be the best advice you will ever receive on how to get - better grades. 4 es Proper gym etiquette for practicing Social media causes this year's New Year's resolution opinion intolerance Add pDixieSunNews on Y Snapchat DianaFossettDSN campus events. c : ii )949 a It 4,1 é i é e t1 4, :. ; converting r to a new religious group. A couple of wee. ks ago, I had an interaction on social media that exemplified just this. Some friends of mine were debating who they thought was the best basketball player of all time. During the conversation, one of my friends told the other that his opinion was wrong. I chimed in by saying that an opinion cannot be wrong, which was quickly rebuked by all others participating in the conversation. I found this 4 I .1 -- published. This is a terrible lie. Everyone is watching each other at the gym. While you shape your body, search for weakness in the others working out around you. Is there a person running next to you on the treadmill? Take a peek at what speed and incline the person is running at and then double it for yourself. This will clearly place you on a higher level, and the lesser gym attendees will part like the Red Sea to let you reach your chosen equipment. With these simple guidelines, you are ready to overload yourself with gear and swagger into your gym. your turf For instance, if you have decided today is arms day whatever that means to you then you need to be prepared for encroaching equipment poachers. Building supersized arms to the point of crazed disproportion is a favored form of worship at the gym. So the easiest way to be sure you get your time in with everything you wanted to do at the gym is a strategy. First, gather up all the movable pieces you want to work with and pile them all over near whatever immovable equipment you'll be working with. Don't worry that it may inconvenience your fellow gym goers; asserting Selecting a gym If you have been researching your local gyms and still can't decide on one especially since "Game of Thrones" understandably interrupted I've got a simple solution. Since this interaction, I have often wondered why it seems like we don't value other people's opinions anymore. The best thing about living in this country is we have the right to believe what we want to believe. Social media merits some of the blame for this. It gives a voice to everyone. We are constantly exposed to views that are different than ours. Many of these views we may never know without social media. In the Common Sense Media's report "Media Use by Tweens and Teens" it is stated teens spend an average of nine hours a day consuming media. On platforms where people can and are encouraged to share their beliefs, it's only a matter of time before we read an opinion that is different than ours. I've often found myself bothered when I see people sharing an op in- - I ion on something, that I have an opposing view on. It is dif ficult to refrain from trying to convince them that their view is wrong. This is something probably everyone has felt. I used to want to try and convince everyone who had a different opinion that I was right, but it usually led to a heated argument. Discussing opposing views with other people can be great. It helps us grow and understand the lives and experiences of others. Taking the wrong approach when discussing controversial topics can often lead to actual controversy. I recall discussing very controversial .topics such as homosexuality with family members. While these topics can be difficult to talk about, it helps us understand different points of view which ultimately lead to more knowledge and growth. My beliefs have changed from having conversations like these after looking at things from in a different way. I remind myself that everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. After all, their opinion doesn't effect me. It doesn't prevent me from believing what I believe or living the life I want to live. Just because someone has a different opinion doesn't mean he or she is wrong. They have every right to believe what they want to believe. The next time an opposing view comes into your life, use discretion. As we begin the new year, include this as one of your resolutions. There are few things greater you can give a person than respect. Let us be mindful of the opinions of others so that we might live in a better world |
