The "Grand Theft Auto" series are just a few of the violent video games that have been blamed for violent acts carried out in real life. A ILC' My exposure to video games happened at a young age. One of my n favorite genres is EMILY FISHER L When tragedy strikes and the population is desperate for answers, we are more susceptible to accepting the wrong ones. Maybe its the heart- breaking chain of shootings that have been happening lately, or the campus officer who was nervously eyeing students during the Video Game Clubs latest social, but Im finally ready to talk about it: Unfair blame is put on video games for mass shootings. By no means am I hating on campus police who are merely doing their job, but I am annoyed with how, for decades, authoritative media have put killers and their hobbies under magnifying glass. This click-drive- n, ultra-focu- s places an unfair connotation on me and millions of other people who love to play video games. I scrolled through a pleth- ora of positive and negative comments on Twitter. One tweet led me to a thread on amirite.com, and this specific forum scared the hell out of me. Thanks to feminism, employers are shying away from hiring beautiful, brainy women for a real job because of the sexual harassment threat, one commenter wrote. So if she cant shake her money maker, how else can an attractive woman survive? An attractive woman can survive by showcasing her intellect and inner beauty. I couldnt find any statistics online to substantiate this, but Ive never heard of an employer being weary of hiring an attractive woman because he or she was afraid of a sexual harassment threat. Sex appeal is never going away because its human nature, and I hope it doesnt, but Ferguson found no links between violent games and behavior. Ferguson even questioned the processes similar studies used to provide different results. Blame and ban video games. Lets make anything that induces moral panic illegal, and the problem is solved, right? It is human nature to find comfort during emotional times in being able to place the blame with the point of a finger. We look for these convenient, easy answers because as a collective society we are unwilling to admit we have failures. I know the answer to mass shootings is not a simple one. I definitely cant find the answer on my own. Lets start the conversation. Continue the conversation on George Streetfest changed its profile picture to a graphic of two mugs giving cheers for the night of the event with full knowledge there would be no beer available, which was misleading to say the least. It should have been upfiront and honest to the public. If organizers of the event wanted more respect from the crowd, they could have taken responsibilbeer-drinki- ity for the mishap as soon as they knew the venue wouldnt be available instead of waiting until the night of to expose the issue. The community as a whole is forced to be tolerant of issues similar to this. In the future it would be wise for anyone planning an event that involves the entire city to be more open about glitches as soon as possible. St. George City Council member Michele Randal said in an email: This had nothing to do with the city. This was a complete oversight by the event promoters. Unfortunately, when the organizers learned they would not be able to use Ancestor Square for the Jazz Garden because of the new sod, they were unaware the state does not allow that licer to transfer to another venue, The Ancestor Square Councils decisions led to a less than fulfilling attempt at Oktoberfest. German culture lacked presence at the fest,bi no one would have noticed a cared had brews been present After all, beer drinking is in ( definition of Oktoberfest. I the rules are a bit more strict with liquor licenses in Utah, but you cant hold an Oktobe fest without beer. The move to have the bee garden at another location wa ge approved by the city council; said Joe Bowcutt, a St. George City Council membe However, approval was also needed from the Utah State Liquor Commission, and th approval apparently was not done in a timely manner. The Utah State Liquor Commission should have been more understanding of Oktoberfest and made the push to get a license more of a priority. It could and should have made an exception to it seven-da- y policy. If newly planted sod truly was the only reason the Ancestor Square Council decided to vote against a Jazz Garden at Oktoberfest, they should have planted it at a& date so it would not interfere with the event. This would have been a simple decision that requires little planning. Perhaps the Ancestor Squai Council could have also let 4 event organizers know before they granted permission. Its outrageous to let something that big go unnoticed until last minute. Fortunately for George Streetfest, St. George will sti maintain some sort of nightli with beer and wine kinks hopefully worked out in the future. According to The Independent, in addition to a magnificent lineup for Novembers Streetfest, the grass in the newly remodele. Ancestor Square courtyard be ready for the Jazz Garden return. And there will be bee Twitter by tweeting Emily at emilyfisherDSN and using the hashtag VoiceOfDixie. Playboys redesign is just a small, positive step toward achieving a world where a womans worth isnt determined by her figure. I hope the future holds a social environment where my daughter doesnt feel like her looks are the driving force behind her success. Playboys decision is making this dream a reality for women everywhere. I never thought Id say this: Thanks, Playboy. Room available in town home, $340 per month.
