DUNCAN continued from Page 6 After she graduated high school, Dixie State posed a great opportunity for Dum an to continue her education and softball career. The schools dental hygiene program and successful softball team attracted her to St. George, along with the weather and the fact that it is so close to her hometown. At DSU, Duncan has been wildly successful, playing a major roll on the team for the last four years. Assistant coach Doug Rogers spoke highly of her time at DSU. She is such a great person, Rogers said. Shes such a great player. Off the field she is so kind and so fun to be around, and when she steps on the field, her game face is on. She has a level of focus that Im not sure Ive ever seen in my many years of coaching. Currently in her senior season, she admits that she might be a little lost after softball comes to an end. Its become such a huge part of my life that I really dont know what Im going to do when its over, Duncan said. Once she got to DSU, she found out that the dental hygiene program interfered with softball and subsequently changed her major to business administration. She will be graduating with that degree in the fall. She plans on pursuing a career with a large corporation but jokingly suggests that shes just going to go into knitting. Keep up with Duncan and the rest of the Storm softball team as they look to close out their season in the coming weeks, starting with a double-heade- r against Azusa Pacific University Friday at 3 p.m. rom Gilbert Michelle Duncan, a senior business administration major Duncan loves to on it. Junior Hannah Folks, a communication major from St. George, said the Storm are in a good spot right now as long as they keep pushing themselves to go lower in scoring and stay consistent. Weve had our ups and downs like any team will, but its the last event of the year here at home so we want to finish the season strong, she said. With impressive shots made by senior Haley Dunn, the team made a solid start. After 18 holes, Dunn finished at 1 over-par for a 73 on day one to tie for first place overall. Dunn birdied four holes on the day, including three on the back nine. Other competitors in the three-da- y tournament include junior Brittney Bisgrove, who placed 1 1th after the first day with a score of 78; junior Shelby Madden, who was one stroke behind Bisgrove at 79 to tie for 13th; sophomore Cobair Collinsworth, tied for 21st after shooting an 83; and Folks, recording an 88 to tie for 29th overall. Head coach Rachel Harmon said the women have utilized their patience and worked on preparing mentally for this tournament. The women have different weaknesses, which makes the tournament different for each of them. My strength is my accuracy most of tire time; I tend to stay out of trouble because I can keep it on grass, as well as my putting, Folks said. Im not a long hitter, so my short game and accuracy are what usually makes up for my lack of distance. Harmon said the team has been preparing for this since the beginning of the school year-- . We have spent a comfortable amount of time at Sunbrook, getting ready for the course and tire greens, she said. Mens golf The men of Dixie State were also successful in the first day of the conference tournament. The men of Dixie State, who are currently ranked No. 22 in the nation, finished first overall in the first day of the tournawith ment, shooting an overall score of 287. Head coach Brad Sutterfield said he expects to see the team with a strong finish. Junior Kenny You, previously named Pacific West Conference golfer of the week, tied for second with James Coon, from University, shoot69. ing a Freshman Donny Hopoi was right behind his teammate and tied for third shooting a par 70 . He birdied a pair of holes on his first nine and another pair on his final nine, good for fourth individually with a 70. The three other contestants representing the Storm were freshman Dane Nelson, who scored 73 in round one, junior Connor Van Guilder was one stroke behind with a 74, and senior Cody Wass, as the fifth golfer for DSU, scored 83 . Hawaii-Hil- o best baseball, Pope said. Weve had a lack of energy during our games. Our hitters have been struggling, and we have committed a lot of field- ing errors. Well have more energetic practices and come ready to play. In game two of the double-headethe Storm r, did come out with more energy and it showed. DSU jumped out to an early 0 lead and were able to hold SMU off when they attempted to rally in the late innings. 3-- Sophomore Tanner Howell picked up the win from the mound as he slung 4.2 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. Freshman infielder Hayes Hall finished 3 from the plate and drove in two RBIs as DSU won 2-- 3-- 1. Saint Martins flipped the script on DSU in the final game of the series as it got out to an early 1 lead and held off the 4-- Storm late. DSU looked to complete another comeback . as Morache and Bice each plated RBIs in the ninth inning, shrinking the lead to one with the tying run on second and nobody out. SMU smashed the Storms hopes of a rally with two straight strikeouts and a fly ball to end the game with two runners stranded. In the 3 loss, Dixie dropped to 3 but still sits atop the Pacific West Conference. DSU will get back to conference play against Azusa Pacific University this week in e California.
