( Jr The launch of the iPad 3 got me wonder- ing about handheld device trends, which made me think: IPad is the Gameboy for grown-up- s. There are many parallels that can be drawn between Apple devices, such as the iPad and the Nintendo Gameboy. Neither creators at Apple and Nintendo invented the idea of their products, but through similar strategies they have stayed on top of sales. The Nintendo Gameboy wasnt the first handheld gaming system. However, it was the first successful one. The Gameboy provided an easy, relatively cheap experience. Most importantly, it provided good games. There have been many handhelds that have tried to compete with the Gameboy, such as the Sega Game Gear and the Neo Geo. Both of them had color before the Gameboy and both had more power, but they still couldnt compete. What Nintendo creators did that was so smart was they kept the Gameboy cheaper, gave it a longer battery life, and always had better games. With these three things it wasnt until Sony made the Playstation Portable that there was ever any real com- cion 0tstu m Im fun for be ,30 the V kids and fit in your pocket! rease dfror read tens, maybe hundreds, of thousands of words on the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the South Florida teenager whose shooting death last month at the hands of a neighborhood watch volunteer has become a national symbol of continuing American racism. But in all those words, there are three that havent come up that seem worth remembering to me: Duke lacrosse team. In 2006, the phrase Duke lacrosse team was seething shorthand for the evocation of racial power and privilege, the everybody-knows-- it truism that to be white and wealthy was a license to rape and plunder other races, the moral certainty that for all our cheap rhetoric to the contrary, millennial America was really just 1955 Mississippi dressed up with an affirmative action program or two. A young black stripper told police that, at a drunken party thrown by captains of the nearly Duke lacrosse team, she was choked, raped and sodomized for 30 minutes by three all-whi- te ;esa According to an article on cnet.com by David . Camoy titled Sony Vitas Launch, Success or Failure, PSP Vita. Apples strategies of selling its products has been similar. Apple creators didnt invent the idea of a tablet, but they reinvented it into something that sells like crazy. Apple differs from Nintendo in the sense that creators at Apple generally dont try to keep their product cheaper than their competitor. Instead, they go for a sleek, quality feel for their products that usually cost their costumers extra bucks. But, V ( Ya, but Im bigger v V VW: 0 . c tm Overnight, the strippers story turned from an accusation to the national common wisdom. Mobs swarmed around the home of the lacrosse players, banging pots and pans. Wanted posters bearing the names and photos of 40 players were posted around campus. The teams games were canceled, its coach fired. Any attempt by the lacrosse players to defend themselves became further evidence of their guilt. When the players said they wanted to consult with attorneys before complying with a police request for DNA samples, cable news video lynchmistress Nancy Grace was incredulous. Youre kidding, right? she squawked, adding that their house ought to be burned down. Apple seems to rely more on other things, such as battery life, design and the article on cnet.com by Harry McCracken titled IOS vs. Android: Lots of stats, Little Clarity, it is quite possible that if you combine both phones and tablets, then Google is probably selling more units. But it says Apple is still selling more tablets, and with revenue from apps, Apple still brings in more money annually than Google. While it is true that the Gameboy DS and 3DS appeal to an older audience with games like Brain Age, most Gameboy games are for adolescents and younger audiences. Also, iPad definitely has games and apps for kids, but with all of the organization, business and practical apps, it is marketed more toward an older audience. The the big difference between Gameboy and the iPad is a Gameboy was something I would hide behind a book in middle school during ap- proach was by no means restricted to the perpetually belligerent Grace. Selena Roberts, now with Sports Illustrated but then a New York Times columnist, said that the refusal of the players to identity the rapists among their ranks was a conspiracy of silence. The possibility that there were no rapists was, well, impossible, for the intersection of entitlement and enablement, there is Duke University, virtuous on the outside, debauched on the inside. Even Dukes own faculty scoffed at the idea that anybody needed to wait for judicial due process. Were turning up the volume, 88 professors wrote in a letter to the student newspaper. To the students speaking individually and to the protesters making collective noise, thank you for not waiting and for making yourselves heard. By not waiting, they also made themselves look like fools. In the courtroom, where evidence counted for more than righteous outrage and political cant, the case against class, and an iPad is what college students read their books on in college.
