For Las Vegas native Ryan Nickels, 21, became a part of his life before he even knew what it was. Nickels said he has been climbing on, jumping off and e running around obstacle courses since he can remember. I used to sneak out of my bedroom window and use the sill to kind of shimmy my way across the side of the house to get onto the roof or see how fast I could climb over the back balcony and shimmy down the support beams to get down to the bottom floor, Nickels said. Nickels moved to St. George at 14, and he and a friend became well known at their high school as the kids who would jump off anything. Because of this, another friend of Nickels showed him the documentary Jump London, starring Sebastien Foucan. Parkour was developed by David Belle in France in 1988. Belles father, Raymond Belle, was well versed in a French military movement technique called the Natural Method and passed it on to David. Its nice having a always wanted to do, and from that moment I looked up every article I could read, every video I could watch, every person I could email or talk to, and learn(ed) as much as I could about what was being displayed as a personal discipline and physical expression. Thats what I loved about it. Nickels began training based on his research and started to get others involved as well. Now, Nickels and those interested in learning and training get together and practice all over the St. George area. Nickels mentioned that the great thing about parkour is the freedom that comes with gymnastics background, Knight said. It makes (it) a little bit easier to jump right into it. Those who train and practice with Nickels range in age from 12 to 29 and have varying levels of experience, but all have bonded over their common interest in parkour. Jake Crookston, 12, and Kiefer McCrillis, 14, both started training in gymnastics before they acquired an interest in parkour. Once they caught wind of people practicing the sport in St. George, they jumped on board. Though they are the youngest in the group, both agreed the people involved in the sport were very accepting and encouraging to them and anyone else who gains an interest in parkour train- it. dont need any equipment, just shoes, You Nickels said.
