Show Kite Fes "Dixie Dixie Escalante. She came up BY BRYAN UHRI Online Editor As the Dixie air warms up into spring, thousands of children will be out flying kites at this years Dixie Escalante Kite Festival. The event, sponsored by Dixie Escalante Electric, aims to encourage reading in local schools and culminates each spring with a festival of games and prizes. A.J. Mellor, a junior integrated studies major form St. George, said the event is a wonderful community event, and his family goes every year. I take my nieces and nephews, He said. We fly kites, but there are also a bunch of booths and things to do. Festival director Stella Iver- son said the event was created as a way for the company to give back to the community. The task of creation and ganization was given to or- Royce Jones, who worked for with a list of ideas. A committee was created by inviting local businesses to be part of the event and decide on a name, location, time and more. The first event took place on May 13, 2000 at the Sunriver Golf Course. The program currently aims at getting children excited about reading. Working along with community schools, Dixie Escalante created reading charts and invited students to read in class and at home. Students can turn in reading charts in exchange for a free kite to fly along with their peers. The top classes at each school will be entered to win a Laser Mania party package, and the second place classes will receive an ice cream party, Iverson said. While encouraging children to read is at the heart of the festival there will be many events involving the community as well. There will be entertain ment throughout the day including some school choirs and a free concert, Iverson to ready take said. According to the festival website, dixiekitefestival. com, over 30 vendors have signed up to attend. Mellor said some people get very serious when it comes to building kites. I usually just get the dollar store kite that breaks in about two minutes, he said. But its awesome to people with their dragon kites and box kites that they have built. Its I L Tt BY just really cool. Iverson also said they expect this to be their biggest year. Wesley Schmidtt, a fresh- man engineering major from Barstow, Calif., is planning on going with family for the first time because he used to attend a similar event back home. It was something I enjoyed a lot, he said. Karman Wilson, a sophomore general education major from Simi Valley, Karli Owens, a sophomore integrated studies major from Panguitch, experiences kite flying in a wind storm. In a Dixie Sun survey conducted on campus out of 30 DSC students, 27 do not use Twitter, leaving three people who do. Two of the 27 people even went as far as using its also become a fast way of delivering the news. Twitter was used during the situation in Egypt a couple of months ago. Users were able to keep people up to date as to what was going on with the protests that led to the resignation of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. I was able to personally witness the effect of Twitter as it pertained to instantaneous sports news. When the story broke that the Denver Nuggets traded Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks, I found out by reading tweets of the people I follow on Twitter. ESPN.com had not posted the story yet, but so many of the people I follow had already posted that the deal was done. It wasnt until an hour after the news broke on Twitter that ESPN.com finally posted the story. Twitter has become a way to find news. Assistant communication professor Eric Young, who teaches classes on social media, said its important to be choosy with the people we follow on the website. "If they're not (selective) luo) n VnH-U- ' i .A' ;ir lrfcisi ini iV :&'' Twitter is really going to assign them anything," Young said. "It'll go into a mainstream feed where your integrated with the likes of MC Hammer, Kevin Smith or 50 Cent." Young said Twitter users need to stop following these kinds of people and start networking productively. He said users should follow people who help them find information about what's going on. "We all need to realize the veracity of the messages coming up," he said. "We have to think for ourselves and say: 'Is this true? Is this valid?' If more messages are coming through that validate that then we get a better picture of what's going on." Even when knowing what's important on Twitter, there are people who don't know how to properly execute its functions. Here are the ways to l: make using Twitter more use-fil- Midgley said its important to use hashtags and the symbol. A hashtag is the symbol that can be found on any computer, cell phone or tablet keyboard. By placing a hashtag before a word, phrase or persons name in a tweet the phrase is then placed into the search engine on Twitter. Users who are searching for the word the tweeter posted in the hashtag will then be able to see the tweet after typing the phrase into the search box. Midgley said she follows people on Twitter who are similar to her. Using the hash-ta- g helps users find those people who are similar to them. Giving a hashtag to a word or phrase also helps users keep their tweets flowing. Users will put tine hashtagged phrase at the end of a tweet like a punch line to a joke. NHL.com writer Dave Lozo had this tweet on April 7, 2011: I dont have season tickets, but what I do have is a particular set of publicists who can get me tickets for games like this.
