Opera brings up in peoples minds a formal production, but this one is so different, Bunker said. Sheldon said the show is easy to understand with spoken dialogue, not just music. Portmans character is psychologically corrupt in that shes so obsessed with being the perfect dancer that she is literally falling apart. Those who are squeamish at the sight of blood and cutting should probably steer clear of this film, as it is one of the demons Portman deals with. The choreographer, Thomas, played by Vincent Cassel, is constantly pushing her to discover her dark side and let it come out in the role of the black swan. As an audience member I was waiting for her to connect her tortured personal life with that of the black swan, thus creating the perfect dancer. But Mila Kunis character, Lily, causes shifts throughout the story. Shes new to the ballet company and seems to have just enough dark party in her to play the black swan. But there is more to this plot than meets the eye. The reason this movie has been so critically acclaimed is because what we see in the trailers is not what we see at the movie theater. Kunis plays a very specific role in the most unusual way, and I believe she pulls it off beautifully. Throw in a performance by Barbara Hershey as over-protecti- ve star mother, and cinematic gold. have you The one drawback to the film is it doesnt give you enough time to relax. I was clenching my jaw (and my butt cheeks) throughout the entire film, and I felt as though director Darren Aronofsky could have slowed down the psychological intensity for just a moment or two to allow the audience to catch its breath. And of course the scene the world has been talking about is the love scene between Kunis and Poitman, which was more graphic than I But despite the severity of the sex scene, there was still no nudity. I can hardly believe that just a few short years ago she was Queen Amidala in those hideous prequels. And who would have thought the snobby girl from That '70s Show would go on to get a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress? And if you dont already believe this film has all the elements y of an creation, please go and see Winona Ryders performance as an aging ballet star. Hopefully, none of you will have to drive to Vegas to see it like I did. That was the most expensive movie ticket my spouse has ever purchased for me. Season of the Witch Its hard to watch a slow death, and I feel as though I am doing just that with every recent Nicolas Cage movie Ive seen. Poor Nic! I feel absolutely bothered this once great actor (although some might disagree with me) is now ' playing sultry, brooding characters with a little too much on their minds. A helping of The Sorcerers Apprentice, anyone? Cages character is a troubled knight who has a come to Jesus moment (pun intended) while fighting in the crusades. After realizing he was partaking in a bloodbath at the expense of Muslim women and children, he renounced his oath to fight for the Catholic Church. Cages sidekick, Hellboy, wait I meant Ron Pearl-maleaves the Churchs army along with him. The two then go on a months-lon- g journey in search of who knows what aimlessly. Upon returning to civilization after their hiatus, they discover something has ravaged the population: The Black Plague. n, t : 8; The Dixie State College Scholarship Associates Committee funded the event, and all profits of the event will further fund scholarships at DSC. Monson said they have spent their entire budget, 2 and they have continued to have local businesses do-- ; I nate their services to the 4 event. Which is great because any cost we can defray glj hi v Well, as two soldiers in an army of thousands who defected and then spent months wandering away from their homes, they were bound to be recognized. Yes, despite there being absolutely nothing like the Internet in the dark ages, for some reason the two were still identified as if the entire country had just seen their faces on the Web and were on the lookout for the two knights. They are then given an ultimatum: Take a captured girl who the townspeople are convinced is a witch that has brought the plague upon them to be tried at a distant monastery, or hang as traitors. Well, even though I wish they would have chosen the latter, they agreed to the journey. I was delighted at the n scene where the cardinal told the two it was either taxi a witch or dangle from a rope. Because who should the cardinal be but Christopher Lee? And in some extremely good makeup in fact! But then the audience is taken down this somewhat psychotic road of is she or isnt she as strange things happen on the way to the monastery. Theres loads of bad dialogue and some scenes that were completely irrelevant. Cage of course cant do an English accent, so I was giggling that he was the only American in England before there was even a USA. However, Pearlmans accent often strayed, and they honestly employ a guide who sounds like hes from New Jersey. No, Im not kidding. I think he was supposed to be the comic relief, but his character honestly felt like it accidentally fell out of Mel Brooks Robin Hood: Men in Tights and landed in this train wreck of a story. All of his dialogue sounded like it was a punch line to a joke we werent around to hear. Dont go thinking this is a comedy. It seems to me to be an attempt at recapturing the big adventure Nicolas Cage who was in National Treasure, a film with lots of action with some comedy plague-stricke- I I efw I wont spoil it for you by revealing if the girl is a witch or not, but I will tell you this: Any thread of hope I had of this being an OK movie was definitely severed as the characters reached the monasteiy, thus beginning the end of the fihn. I specifically remember thinking to myself as the fihn started winding down, So help me, if this ends with someone saying and so the black plague ended, Im going to shoot myself. Well, I didnt have my gun handy. Callbacks: -- through sponsors is more money that we can be putting toward scholarships, Monson said. That's the spirit of the production from his perspective, Syphus said. "Yeah, its a competition and there are winners, and its full blown, but when you think about the reason behind it all it really is a big deal," Syphus said. "This is a chance for students to give a donation of sorts toward a scholarship that will benefit somebody whos maybe not been as fortunate as most of us have."
