I totally expected a letter from Hogwarts at age 11, Mulitalo said. While for now Harry Potter still seems to dominate the hearts of the younger generation, it may not always keep them spellbound. Baldwin said she will probably read the books to her children someday, but only because reading is so important to her. I almost think it will be a fad, Baldwin said. Fad or not, itd be hard to toss a broomstick without hitting someone who can say how their culture has been affected by the books and films. Rowling spent a lot of time on their thoughts as they wandered around, Rasmussen said. The movies couldnt capture that. The core of the Harry phenomenon seems to be how many 19 to have grown up readthe books. Many have ing favorites (five, six or seven most often) and most have one they didnt particularly like (two and three didnt fare too well). However, not everyone who stayed up to watch the film's opening night vigilantly perused the books. Fola Mulitalo, a freshman integrated studies major from Salt Lake City, had only read up to the fourth before she lost steam. De 1 A ft i I ed right-plac- A A ' I - Nr- The fast and ping start ! Wilsons paintings have rich, blended colors and a balance of strong and soft brush strokes. Also, every painting contains two sets of four dots. According to Wilsons webthe site, www.dc-wilson.codots represent his signature. One set of dots signifies D, which is four letters from the beginning of the alphabet. The other set of dots represents W, which is four letters from the end of the alphabet. Together, the dots signify Daryl Wilson. The showcase also contains a number of photographs, which are printed on archival canvas instead of photography paper. Wilson said because he was a painter first, it was only natural that he should print his photographs on canvas. He said he prefers printing on canvas even though it's more expensive. u W Fatal Error, Wilsons October release, blends science fiction with mystery and suspense. There are three different things going on in Fatal Error. Error by F. Paul Wilson is nothing continued from page "Beyond the Literal" takes the St. George At Museum on a journey of the surreal with canvas and sculpture. The exhibit features local artists and depictions of abstract paintings and sculptures that convey what words cannot. According to the museum website, the artists are all from Utah and include Pearl Meadows from Springdale, who lives by the words of Marc Chagall, Great art picks up where nature ends. She began painting in 2004 after a decade of work in photography. W. Noel Logan from is the only sculptor featured in the exhibit, and he holds degrees in art and archeology. His work with metal was intriguing yet unique, adding a third dimension to the museum floors. Other artists include Anne Weiler Brown from " p n i The idea behind the is to educate the pub, about the roots of abstract art, which began more that 100 years ago as sentational art, Manager at Curator Deborah Reeder said. Reeder said abstract art lows people to go beyond surfaces and appearances and go into the interior of our being, which is what matters most. The emotions that accom pany abstract art can be plentiful and even surpris-inas images may spark Lj imagination or memory. It is what we feel, think and believe that counts, Reeder said. While some may find thr iad type of art strange and different, I would encourage 0y everyone to see the images and get lost in them. Many people have trouble with this type of art, Reeder said. We hope to idi bridge the gap between viewer and artist. Ju non-rep- paintings convey a message of surrealism and the unseen emotions of the artists. As I walked the halls of small museum I was reminded of the beauty that Utah holds. Maybe it wasnt the direct intention of the artists to remind me of St. George, but the vibrant colors and subtle transitions sparked images of Zion and Snow Canyon. It was a gentle escape to stand there and allow my mind to wander while my eyes were lost in the array "The colors last much longer, it doesn't fade and it's higher quality," he said. "And it just looks better." Many of the photos are of ordinary subjects but are taken in remarkable fighting or at creative angles so as to give the image depth and interest. During the event Wilson will discuss his perspective of art, read some of Iris poetry and unveil his latest art piece. The plot gets gripping when Habib is ordered to cut off one of his own fingers to give to the kidnapper. Repairman Jack, a recurring character in many of Wilsons stories, is hired by Habib to help with his unsavory dilemma. Another one of the storylines in Fatal Error is the birth of a boy. Dawn Pickering, the woman who gives birth to the boy, is convinced he is not human. She is told she had a miscarriage and that her son died upon birth. Is this a conspiracy with a hint of Rosemarys Baby type stuff happening? Again, too much information I cannot divulge. The last thing going on in the story is a group of people known as the Septimus Order, who are plotting to rid the world of the Internet and achieve world domination. Repairman Jack is the one man who is trying to halt these things from happening and find out the truth about Pickerings baby, all while helping Habib get his family back. lai 0( ;air 'OU nas ,ogy "1 pin Ions Pa v Vv.-' : r - - 1 , ly," li'A'A Y jlkt. i , i0t bl i v.j hrfrjidy colored abstract .A U alumnus Daryl C. . ron adorns the walls of e North Plaza. One poem that hangs next to a painting with deep red paint splotches begins with "Spilled was this blood, sheathed is this blade." Another poem hanging near a photo of a magnificent sunset reads, "Enchanted I've become, entranced I am." Wilsons work has really evolved over the last 10 years, re a) 1 : C - 1 ' photography ?s ate currently .'h Es ! mfc X r I li The biggest problem I had with this book was that it was written. The first 50 or so pages gripped my senses and enticed my imagination with sheer anticipation. By the halfway point of Fatal Error, it was nothing more than an arid arsenal of apathy. As the story went on, the mystery of Pickerings baby became a mystery of why Wilson was compelled to bore his reader, in this case, me. Repairman Jack had all the characteristics of a badass. From the moment he entered the story, I envisioned him as the suave ladies man who can thwart his foes with either brain or brawn. Indeed, Jack often stymied the sinister with might or cunning, but he never courts a woman. Maybe Im jaded perhaps Ive seen too many James Bond movies but a character like Jack should either lure the ladies like a rock star or be monogamous with a gorgeous woman whos a brain surgeon or something of that sort. As the conflicts mounted and the solutions were being formed in Fatal Error, the k gg liters , f h! M to Fatal L i more than a disappointing tease. After reading this novel, was very clear as to why th was not one of Wilsons Some of the loose ends in the book wen not tied together well, nor were they interesting when concluded. As the story dragged on, more and more characters appeared with nothing to offer other than disinterest and confusion. I wont reveal which one of the storylines in the nove has a futile conclusion. I assure anyone who yearns to be bored: You will be highh disappointed with how Wilson resolved the conflict. While the unscrupulous people in the book were plotting their demise of the soulful, the storyline eventually bled into a dismal display of monotony. Delicious deceits were a savory recipe for a highly original and riveting story Unfortunately, the beginnW: of the book was a lure of lies. The midway point of the story is tiresome at best The conclusion of the bool' has some mystery to it, but overall, the ending is a hap-less tale of terrible. best-seller- s. il |
