ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Neon Odyssey exhibit to dose Friday tDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 20 0 ft DIXIE SUN - 9 Ham visited Dixie State College Friday for a live painting demonstration where he painted a portrait of Bob Dylan. Ham said: What I like about Dylan is that he understood the courage it takes to listen to his interior voice, especially when he already had his life made. He was at the top of his game. Most of the artists I paint in some way or another help me to remind myself of S' n I l that. Ham reminded id L abstract and colorful painting of John Lennon graces the walls of the Sears Art Gallery. The exhibit, featuring Jeff Ham adjunct professor Shane Christensen, will be on display until Friday. An ind IV SHANNON JOHNSON Dixie Sun Staff Writer Students have just a days left to see the tew and ceramics eatured at the Seas Gallery in the Eccles fine Arts building. The show features jiwork enowned artist Jeff Neon Odyssey, lams swell as adjunct Shane Chris-tnseceramics on display. The gallery is 'pen until Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Since he was 18 years old, Ham's work has been inspired by the Southwest and southern Utah. His work can be found in magazines, galleries, and numerous collections and universities across the nation. I was really excited to be invited to the gallery, Ham said. Its a cool facility; its beautiful, and Im really happy with the way the show turned out. Its a good show, and it came together very well. Ham said St. George has made him feel more at home than any other place hes lived. The city has been un- believably supportive of me, and doing this gallery is a good way to give back to the community, he said. I like doing this for the college because it brings people to the campus to see whats going on, and I like doing that because I like this place. Students, as well as community members have attended the gallery to view Hams artwork. Freshman Jessica Jones, a music education major from Parowan, is excited to see the gallery full of artwork once again. The gallery is a good thing for the community and the students, as well as a great way to spotlight talent and cultural diversity, she said. Jones said whenever she walks by the gallery Hams work catches her eye. I really like the bright colors he uses, and the portraits of celebrities are unique, but they are fun to look at because you can still recognize who they are, she said. Ham said he likes to paint in bright colors because thats the way its come out since he was 6 years old. He said when he gets tired of painting people hell start painting animals for a few months and when he gets tired of that he goes back to people. stu- dents that they should bring art into the world without worrying how it will be judged by the world. Have the courage and convictions to put it out there and to let your work be what its going to be, he said. Freshman Candi Pierce, an accounting major from Monument, Colo., said the Sears Gallery is a valuable resource to expose students to what is available to them. Life would be pretty boring without art in your life, she said. The Sears Gallery is a neat venue that students should take advantage of. Ham said exposure to the arts changes your perspective. Its important not just to see standard traditional kind of art, but all the different kinds of art that are out there, he said. "Art brings culture to a campus. Students need to see that.
