"The hardest part was walking in heels for five hours a day, but practicing a lot and working with the girls was worth it, and it was fim." Today students are invited to paint the D, located at 300 South and 800 East on campus at 4 p.m. On Thursday students will have the opportunity to meet the candidates for the 2008-200- 9 student council from 10 1 to a.m. p.m. in the Gardner Center. On Friday the Great Race will take place at 6 p.m., followed by a free barbecue and carnival on the Encampment Mall at 7 p.m. A mandatory meeting for Great Race team captains will be held today at 8 p.m. The race includes 10 different team events for each to compete in, including run10-m- ning, Rollerblading, biking, etc. The carnival after the Great Race is probably the biggest this and best event of Activities Student year, Director Donna Stafford said. This year we have taken the carnival to a new level, she said. Stafford said Zions Bank is sponsoring former American Idol contestant and Utah native Carmen Rasmusen for a free live concert on the Encampment Mall at 7:30 p.m. Student Body President Brock Bybee, a senior communication major from Roy, said almost every club on campus will have a booth set up. Higginson said there will be lots of food, music and a big tent set up for dancing. She said there will also be blowup toys on one end of the carnival. There will also be a jumbo slide, a balloon man and a DJ there. The carnival is an event for the family, and its free for students and the community, Higginson said. Saturday morning students can get up early to whitewash the D on Black Hill and have a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. Stafford said this event is where the history of really came from because its when the college had its first She said official y. when the community decided there needed to be a D on Black Hill, they called an architect to make sure you could see it straight down Tabernacle Street. After they had that figured out, they decided on a day to create this D. Early one morning the male students managed to push all the rocks they needed into the area the architect had marked and whitewashed the new D two or three times to really make it stand out. After this, the girls came up with their wagons full of homemade sandwiches and salads, and the group had a picnic on the hillside. is a tradition thats almost as old as the college, Stafford said. Its the first original week we really had. around aimlessly looking for family and friends, Kelvington said. Whether the meeting place be on the floor or outside, it cuts down on time and lessens stress. Lance Adams, a senior biology major from St. George, will receive his bachelors degree on May 1. Having already received his associate degree from DSC, hes not too worried about wondering where to be. I've graduated once with my associate degree and done this before and am familiar with the process, Adams said. Rae Reimer, a junior from Cincinnati graduating with her Associate of Science degree, said she is excited for graduation. Being a single mom who barely made it through high school, she said she finds it a great accomplishment to be graduating this semester. Reimer didn't express any feelings of nervousness but said she is rather excited for the event and wants to be in her cap and gown already. A softball tournament will also be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in which student and alumni teams will face off against each other at the DSC Cooper Diamonds. will conclude 9 p.m. in the at Saturday Gardner Ballroom with the dance. Tickets will be $ 10 per couple, available at the door. The theme for the dance this year is Masquerade, said Special Events Chair Stephanie Brady, a junior visual technology major from Grace, Idaho. Its a formal dance, and the color scheme is purple, silver and cream, she said. Its going to have a very elegant feel, kind of like the Phantom of the Opera. Brady said couples are supposed to bring masks to wear, but if they dont have them, student government will be providing some. I suggest making the masks as a couple before the dance, she said. Following the dance, True Rebel Night will be held at the fountain at midnight Brady said student government will be providing mints and lip balm. is an exciting tradition on Dixie State D-D- Colleges campus, and were excited to keep it going, Bybee said.
