The reasons for the fall in the market are nomics, explained that the stock market is a reflection of the economy; it does well when the economy does well. "Our economy is not doing well right now, and we may be at the brink of a recession, Mahmud said. Johnson said he agrees the faculty and staff of the college are doing everything they can to retain students. However, the biggest draw for students, he said, is more degree offerings. As we get more programs to offer, more students will come, Johnson said. Its just that simple. 12 He said students can help the economy by being consumers. It is the resilience of our consumers which helped us to come through the last recession so quickly..., Mahmud said. As long as the consumers can believe in the future they will keep on spending, and that will keep the economy afloat. If not, then we should better be ready for a very rocky ride. However, a fall in the economy is not always a bad thing, and its something the country will go through every few years. Instead, its the duration of the recession people should be focusing on. The survey has a broad scope, with about 600 colleges and universities of all types and sizes using the survey this spring, according to the press release. But the main reason DSC is participating is staff members and administrators want to learn more about what students think and do so they can improve the undergraduate programs. David Roos, executive director of enrollment management, said they wont be sending the survey out to everyone on campus because they mostly want to target freshmen and seniors. SHOOTING continued from page 3 Theres still a chance that sophomores and juniors can receive the though, Roos said. Thats one thing that were worried about, that students will just disregard it as junk mail. Roos said the first attempt to send students the survey will be through their Rebelmail accounts, and if theres no response from that, then they will be sent a hardcopy in the mail. This is going to be like our report card on how we should do better and make changes where a majority of students are having difficulty, Roos This isnt just like any other survey. Everything on the survey will be looked at closely, and well be looking for areas on campus we can improve on. said. Its important that researchers find out directly from the students about their experiences and then share what they learn through comparisons with other colleges and universities, according to the press release. DSC chose to participate; it wasnt required. This means there are people who want to see the results. For students looking to buy a home or refinance a home they already have, this is a great time to do it because as stocks fall so do interest rates, Wells said. How does the market falling affect student investors? Wells said it isnt a big concern for younger investors. Those who need to be concerned are people who are looking at retirement. Whats happening right now in the market is just a correction. There are definite signs of slowing in the economy, but I dont think it will be long term, Wells said. Its really just a natural process, and Im suspecting that well pull out of it by the third or fourth quarter of this year.
