She attended Delta High School where also lettered and took state in track. One of Nielsons highlights in high school was winning state in the 800 meter. I was running three times a day, 3 12 miles with my dad following me in a car to help me keep up my pace, she said. Nielsons father, Dan Nielson, also took state and holds the Delta High School record for the 800 meter for the boys. Nielson holds the same 800 meter school recorder the girls. My father never pushed me to take state like him, she said. I asked him to help me to get going in the mornings becauseI it was so something wanted, he was there to encourage me every step in his car, Nielson said. She had many offers from different universities in the state for track but decided to come to DSC for volleyball. I wanted to come here to be part of the big transformation going on here, Nielson said. Im much better at track than I am in volleyball, but I love playing and T her natural position at middle block- er. Head coach Jeff Parker said he committed to keeping her to the middle blocker position, and she really has come to age. She is really strong and works hard, he said. She has made great improvement, and thats why shes a captain this v- - ) year. The defensive unit was led by senior defensive back Jayson Malufua, who recorded four solo tackles along with one assisted stop. The Rebels proved to be able to bounce back from losses by winning two contests following a loss in their first game. To start a stretch of five home games out of their next six contests, the Rebels ) will face a big challenge in hosting Carson-Newma- n College ) of Tennessee. Carson Newman ranked ninth in a Division II coaches poll at press time, but that was before their 45-victory on Saturday. Nielsons transition has been very difficult; in a matter of three years she has moved from high school to a junior college to Division II athletics. Coming out of high school my volleyball experience wasnt much because small towns didnt have club teams, and I was active in other sports, she said. I did learn a lot more the first week at DSC than my whole high school career." Nielson is a veteran of the team. As one of three juniors, she could be the first volleyball player to receive her r degree. However, Nielson did express strong feelings toward possibly serving in an LDS mission, which might set back the graduation date. team Nielson leads the in blocks with 12 and fourth in kills with 1.73 per game.
