In the final leaving a match against Ventura College, both teams managed to sqeeze in a single as they tie. ended with a All three games were played against California teams. Long Beach City College was their first opponent, and that is a team coach Linda Huddleston said is a big rival. Long Beach is a tough competitor throughout the state of California, and a team the Rebels have never beaten. "It was a very good game," Huddleston said. "Both teams 0-- 0 1 played well." Although they would have liked to pull of a big win team, against a Huddleston said it was still nice to end the tough battle in a tie. "A tie is quite different in soccer than in other sports," she said. "To some teams it may be considered a win." The shutout score may be highly credited to key defenders such as freshmen Brianna Robison, Marli Martin, and sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Tanner. The defense held strong and allowed only total yards, which included an impressive minus five yards rushing for the Rhinos. The college football season is roaring with a head of steam. To lots of Americans, opening day of football is like their first deeply religious experience; in fact most, fans might actually study ESPN more than religion during the next six months. The fans of Dixie State College football are no different. Lucky for Rebel fans, none of the DSC players are holding out for an extended contract or more money. DSC fans are fortunate 221 enough to have some players who would like to bring pride to the school and fight for a national championship. Last year the Rebels had a record of 10-- and in the preseason polls ranked No. 2 in the nation behind only Pearl River Community College in Mississippi (which finished the 2004 season undefeated). DSC's team put up extremely impressive individual and team statistics last year that included finding the end zone 61 times last season. In their 12 games last year they averaged 37.3 points per game while holding opponents to only 21.8 ppg. The team also had great balance of rushing and passing yards, which keeps opponents guessing what they will be hit with next. Like they tend to do in competitive college sports, players follow the revolving door, and football is no different. Some of the notable departures are players like Walter Nickel, a second team tight end with 2 with a small practice and "I smile said, didn't know that." That could be because of her focused attention to her duties. In Friday's last game, Martin kicked a shot off the goalie that resulted in a freshman Anna Baugh shot that tied the game in the second half. "It hit off the goalie and I was able to score," Baugh said. "All the girls on the team were really excitied." The team has the right to be excited, with leaving the famed state unbeaten. However, just like any other team in the world of sports, there is always room for improvement. "We played well, but have some things to work on," sophomore Blair Jorgensen said. Huddleston knows what things need to be worked on, and it is just a matter of time this early in the season. "We struggled a bit on offense," Huddleston said. "We also struggled trying to get them to play the way we want to play." The Rebels are also struggling with some injuries. Sophomore Heidi Bushman couldn't play in Friday's game due to an injury, and freshman Tauni Huddleston has been out for two weeks now. P DSC will travel to Carson City, Nev., to take on Western Nevada Community College on Thursday, then will take on North Idaho College Saturday in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. The Rebels' first home game will be Sept. 16 against Snow College. Monday's home game was canceled. Also, there is Danny Southwick, who threw for more than 1,900 yards with a completion percentage of 55.8 and 11 touchdowns in 12 games for the Rebels last season. Missing from this year's equation is a good chunk of receiving and defensive talent. Fortunately there are a few of last year's players returning. First team tailback J.T. Diedrichs is one returning player offensive coach Kelly Smith said is as close to Corey Dillon as they get. He looks to have an even better season this year than last, which included 22 touchdowns and more than 1,800 514 rushingpassing yards equaling nearly half of the total offense for the Rebels. Some areas of concern for most fans have been replacing an offensive line that allowed a great offensive year for the Rebels. Smith said everyone is so new that it will take time to see how the players will gel. It will Fa AI Ai Ai Ck The Rebels scramble in on Ogden's offensive line during Saturday's win. also be interesting to see how proposed starting quarterback Derek McAllister and new wide receivers bond to solidify the offense. What about the defense? Smith said the defense is quick and will cause a lot of problems for opposing offenses, including the return of pre-seaso- n Misi Tupe, who is fast and can cause a number of problems. So for fans out there who believe defense wins games, they can look forward to victories this season. The next game for the Rebels will be against Air Force Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at Hansen Stadium.
