Show ARTS 14- - DIXIE SUN A&E & Staff Writer Chase Due to the nature of the film, this week we have taken an interesting spin on the conventional movie review, turning it from two separate stories to a single commentary. Myself, (Chase Grant and Wendi Epps have gone scene by scene and taken this her fallen enemy, she turns to see the child standing in the doorway. The Bride sincerely tells her that she didnt intend to kill her mother in front of her, and that if she gets older and still burns about it, she will be waiting. With that, The Bride walks out of the house and truck parked outhops into a side and drives away, the words Pussy Wagon blazing across the rear of the car. As she yanks the blade out of movie apart to give you the true lowdown on what is certainly a controversial film. Enjoy. The opening scene shows a close-uof what once was a beautiful woman, sputtering, her face swollen and covered in blood. The camera focuses only on her face; her eyes grow wide as the sound of a gun is cocked. She manages the words, Bill, its your ba- - and the gun goes off, quickly blowing a hole in her head. p Wendi-Thi- close-u- s WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2003 But The Bride kindly points out that Green is the only person she came to kill and asks her when she wants to die. Green picks up a box of cereal which has a gun hidden inside of it and shoots at The Bride, who instantaneously hucks a knife deep into Greens chest. Editor Wendi Epps Dixie Sun ENTERTAINMENT best. by M. Chase Grant Dixie Sun & flame-painte- Chase I thought the dialogue was absolutely ridiculous. Either they were engaging in wit that was much too intricate for either actresses to come up with themselves, or hurling mono-syllabi- c curses at each other. Wendi-I- t was strange scene was well shot; the extreme with the black and white really how they went from fighting brutally to going into the kitchen to calmly discuss business over a cup of coffee Thurman's thirst for revenge showed the emotion in her face.Chase-...well.a- s much emotion as actress Uma Thurman would be able to muster, which is lackluster at best. Wendi-.- . the part that got me was at the end of the scene when she said "Bill it's your baby" but can't quite get the whole thing out. It bothered me that he would be murdering the pregnant mother of his child. remains unchanged, even after the realization that Green 's daughter may be on her own quest for revenge when she is old enough to understand what she saw happen to her mother. Chase-- suppose, but that's only if your trying to dig for philosophy in easily the dumbest movie Ive ever had the displeasure of witnessing. The movie abruptly changes scenes and chapter one begins. In sunny Pasadena, California, Uma Thurman, known only to us as The Bride and Black Mamba, trudges up to a front yard filled with children's toys and rings the doorbell. A surprised Vernita Green (Vivica Fox), a.k.a. Copperhead, answers the door, and the two are instantly engaged in some hardcore kung fu fighting. The front door opens during the bloody brawl and a child walks in, asking mommy who made the mess. We now learn about Ishii, and how she became an excellent assassin and the head of the Japanese yakuza underworld. The scene is played out in Japanese animation (anime), and tells of n the murder of her parents and her revenge at the age of 11. Wendi-- I thought it was fairly harsh that she witnessed the brutal murder other parents at nine and then pretended to be a prostitute at eleven to revenge her parents death. Cbase-Yeabut the anime was awesome. It was one of the few redeemable parts of the entire movie. Ive seen other anime before, and this fit the movie and ran with it, rather than detracting and making it look cartoony. Wendi-liked how hey kept the unrealistic blood spray consistent with the rest of the movie (blood spraying across the room and filling the screen). Chase- - suppose, if consis Wendi It was a pretty good chick-fightChase- as far as those go. Wendi-...anthe action cuts were very abrupt and stylistic, true to director Quentin Tarantinos style. I Green sends the child to her room and the two glare intensely at each other. The two discuss their unfinished business," and the conversation is vague at 1 m 7TT j H f r. i; ;?))i - :: tency can be considered to be a good thing in this case. g The Bride goes to Okinawa, Japan seeking sword-make-r Hattori Honzo (Sonny Chiba), who happens to be the former master of Ishii. He agrees to make the sword and off she goes to Tokyo to fmd Ishii Chase fins was perhaps the only scene where Thurman's performance was actually well done. She was playing the part of a blonde idiot trying to flirt with a Japanese man. She pulled off the part with a familiar ease. Wendi-- I like chicks with swords. Chase-..- . She finds her in The House of Blue Leaves nightclub and engages in battle with Ishiis many minions. At the end of the scene we see The Bride standing on a railing on the second story of the nightclub. Below her are about a hundred members of Ishiis gang, The Crazy 88s, limbs missing and blood spraying. She tells them, Those of you who are lucky enough to have your lives, take them. But leave your limbs here. They belong to me now. Wendi-Thi- s was definitely the best scene in the show. It looked like fish flopping around, only they were missing their arms and legs and Hr ipHiwinr K way too much blood squirting everywhere. It was awesome. wouldn't was an 7 am begin to describe it. Wendi-Thi- s woman hear me roar" scene. Chase-Anas such, it was completely unreahstic. Overview movie began bloody and the brutality escalated as the movie went on. Every time I thought it couldnt get any worse, it did. From the orderly prostituting The Bride's comatose body to the Japanese anime story of Ishiis life spewing blood like a rainstorm, I yearned for some knowledge of why these people did this to The Bride. She rightly seeks revenge for the loss of her child but shows no sign that she wonders why her comrades did such a thing to her. I guess it will all be explained in the sequel. Wendi-Th- Chase-Thi- s movie was terrible! I was constant- ly shifting between laughing at the absurdity of it all or keeping my gag reflex in check at the unrelenting guts and gore. The cinematography was decent, and there were some very nice effects, but as a whole, this movie failed in every aspect, and it failed miserably. Save yourself the money you would spend on tickets and burn it; it will be more entertaining. Two thumbs down. mi) ins PGR Tl e ;. umi u it IF , |
