Show Students impressed with teacher's style by Brock Bybee Dixie Sun News Editor For most students, while taking Professor John Cartiers composition class, an entirely new view of the English language opens up to them. He shows me new ways of seeing things. When Im in his class, I take different angles of writing than I ever saw before, said DSC sophomore Krystal Allen. Professor Cartiers unique teaching style combined with a diverse backgroud of travel and studies have helped him become a major asset to the DSC campus. Professor John Cartier is in his fourth full semester here at Dixie Slate and says he has enjoyed eveiy moment since he came here from New York. Cartier teaches english composition classes here on campus But its not when or what he teaches. Its how. Students across campus are marveled at the way he brings out the true writer in themselves. Said DSC sophomore Keli Nielsen, I cant beleive the way he helps me in my writing. Since Ive been in his class, Tve picked up so much more than in the past with other teachers. Its astounding what he does for his students. Cartier has a much different approach to learning than most teaches I wanted to be the would teacher that I never had As an undergraduate, I was lost. I never had someone to push me. I try to help rather than hinder. he commented full-tim- e He is so much more different than other teachers. In the past Ive had teachers who would have a specific deadline, and everything was uniformed and precise. There was no creativity. Everything sort of revolved around the teacher. With him, all that is reversed. Everything revolves around you. You are the focal point of his discussion. You are what matters. Not some silly vocabulary test. You. He cares about helping you grow as a writer. Thats what makes him different from other teachers here on the campus. continued Allen. Its that creative style of teaching that students are buzzing "Just Married" will make you "Just Laugh!" about aross the campus. Born and raised in New Jersey, Cartier graduated from high school and attended Nathaniel Hawthorne College in Antrim New Hampshire. Going into school, I focused on being a business major, but soon after, I got into drama and also writing. I wrote a mildly successful play, and felt the need to pursue this area. said Cartier. Times were harsh at this point in the country, so he left school and enlisted in the Navy and served four years as a Naval Intelligence officer. After I got out of the Navy I to school in returned Pennsylvania at Edinburgh College. I later dropped out and moved to Seattle where I could w'ork on my writing. he continued. He got to Seattle, and then had the opporunity to move to Japan. He stayed there for five years working on his writing and then returned to the states to do some more teaching in New Jersey. After a few years of teaching back east, I felt the need for a change in my life. I needed to get out. So, in the summer of 2001 he took the train across the country out to California. From there he traveled and camped out along the southern coast of California and into Nevada and Arizona. When I came here to St. George, I felt that this was the right place to be. It fit. And they lived happily ever ... or did they? In the new romantic comedy Just Married we take a peek at an audacious young couple as on their they embark Honeymoon from Hell. Tom Leezak (Ashton Kutcher) is just your regular Joe. He likes sports and beer and works as after a nighttime radio traffic reporter. Sarah McNerney (Brittany Murphey) is a beautiful, young, art history major from a wealthy and privileged family. When the two meet, through a casual incident, they find love at first sight. In keeping with the tradition of all romantic comedies, whatever can go wrong will go wrong for the two young lovers. The family pet dies in the first twenty utes. (No, its not a cat although the movie does have , a Pussy the football-in-the-hea- From there he flewback home to New York and got on the Internet searching for jobs in the area. When Dixie State College came up, I called them up. He had a phone interview, and soon was on his way back to Utah to check out the campus. Once I was here, they gave me the job. I flew back to New York and packed up everything that I could into my jeep and took off across the country. A few fleeting moments later, we end up at their wedding They say their I dos! and get a few bloody noses, and theyre off to Europe for their honeymoon. But what would a European honeymoon be without an airline episode, some crazy cars, a concierge, sadistic old people, bad weather, and of course, an exboyfriend. The show moves along quickly, which is okay because you know from the beginning what is going to Director happen anyway. Shawn Levy has made yet another teen movie that seems to fit the mold of any of a dozen similar and its still entertaining. And after all, isnt that why we go I enjoyed the to movies? movie and would recommend spin-off- s, it. Especially for all you love- birds out there, this show has something in it for both of you. (You can even take a picture of your wedding day and enter Westates Theaters Just Married sweepstakes,) This show is funnier than Dude, Wheres My Car? (as if thats hard) and less annoyThe ing than Clueless. chemistry on screen works for the two, and may even be what led to their real life relationship. Anyway, all the dim-witte- d moments add up to be reasonably entertaining, and I would have to say that Id be surprised if it didnt win an MTV movie award this year. Just the Married is Honeymoon from Hell that might be a little bit of heaven to watch. You think your relationship has problems? In this witty romantic comedy, youll embark on an adventure with Tom (Kutcher) and Sarah (Murphey) on their honeymoon as they find out whether or not love really is enough. Although it hasnt received good reviews from most of the papers around the nation, it didnt hit 1 at the box office this last week for no reason. The movie is comical and fun, but definitely not serious. So, if youre looking for something to do on a Friday night, Just Married is a great way to kill a couple of hours. |
