Like Empire, The Two Towers has no begin-- ! ning and no end but adds depth to the evolving characters for whom we have been cheering since the first film. The first 30 minutes move quickly, covering nearly of the book and giving us the basics of the plot and the whereabouts of each character as we left them at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli remain together and join with the Riders of Rohan against the legions of Isengard, taking part in the desperate battle one-thir- d over Helms Deep. Merry and Pippin escape their captors and flee into Fanghorn Forest where they meet the almighty Treebeard as he stomps out an ore who had been tailing the Hobbits. Gandalf, believed to be dead, has returned as the White Rider to complete his task in the fellowship. Frodo and Sam have begun their dangerous journey deeper into the heart of Mordor, led by the schizophrenic Gollum all the while the armies of the Dark Lord are massing together, unaware that the One Ring draws ever nearer to the cracks of doom. The CGI withstood the ultimate test of blending in when he was thrown to the ground by Frodo and Sam, beginning an intense struggle over the ring. A flawed or weak character does not exist in the ensemble. Never once did I think, "This person just doesn't fit." The Two Towers plays against the backdrop of darker times and ends on a weary note in which there is not much hope and things seem to be teetering on the edge of permanent despair. Ending the movie on an unstable note was pure genius. With the second chapter under our wings, we shall soon have one of the greatest stories ever told in the greatest cinematic form achievable. This movie truly does justice to the book and to the author who has inspired a new genre of film making. |
