Show muf'?T L The Foice ofDixie Right on Target claims victory at DSC ef On Thursday, Feb. 28 and Friday, March 1, final elections for the 2002-200- 3 DSC Executive Council took place. After the disaster of the online voting during primary elections, ASDSC decided to conduct the final elections, with hard copy voting, meaning students would have to mark an actual piece of paper. Connor Shakespeare, student body president, said that more students able to vote online, but he was still happy with the 652 students who did vote. Students were invited to vote on Thursday and Friday afternoon and were also given a complimentary cookie after their vote was entered. All three parties who were entered into the primary race also ran during the final election because of the complications due to the online With all three parities running the votes were strung out between them. If there had only been two parities running the results would have been altered. Many college people will be taking a trip abroad for spring break andor summer vacation. Most of them will have a great time with their foreign experiences, but others may not be so lucky and their vacations could turn into disasters. Many vacationers let loose and party a little too hard over their break, which consecan hold quences when you are not on American soil. Many vacations have been ruined as a direct result of drinking, drugs, andor other disorderly behavior. Every year more than 2,500 American citizens are arrested while abroad - about half on narcotics charges. It is important to remember that drug laws vary from country to country, and some drugs that are legal in one country may not be in the next. Many young people have become victims because of their ignorance of the laws in the country they are visiting. Alcoholdrug abuse and crav behavior are not just problems in foreign countries but right here at home, too. Many students get arrested for being intoxicated in public, for underage drinking, and for drunk driving. The percentages go up drastically over spring break. Many students expecting to get away with drinking and drugs, without getting in trouble here in the states, may travel abroad assuming that because they are foreign vacationers their actions will be overlooked. The truth is that everybody should expect to obey the laws of the countries they visit, and if they break those laws they should be prepared to face severe penalties severe extremely penalties. Being arrested is only one of the many dangers of being a visitor in a foreign land. Every year scores of young Americans have been injured or have died in automobile accidents, drownings, and shootings in addition to other mishaps, when the situation gets Sometimes out of control. but accidents are unavoidable, more often than not they are caused by alcohol or drug abuse. Many Americans tragically have been raped or robbed because of poor judgment while under the influence, or simply being in the wrong part of a town they dont know. So remember, thoughtless behavior while in another country can do more than just ruin your spring break. It can land you in a foreign jail, make you a victim of much crime, or even worse worse. Before you leave, check up on the laws of the land. Don't go out alone. Make sure you know how to get back to your hotel. Take proper identification and the phone number of someone to contact in case of an emergency. A Iso, if you plan to drink, don't drive. Stay away from potentially dangerous situations.
