Show WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2000 THE SUN 9 3 Lawhorn continues to dominate SWAC opponents By Ashleigh Millgate Sports Editor ashleighmfowest.com One of Dixies star power forwards from last year's conference championship team has returned for another season. d Vance Lawhorn is The 68" back and definitely ready to show off his smooth moves and his natural scoring ability for the Rebels. Lawhorn, a Las Vegas native, grew up loving basketball for as long as he can remember. Lawhoms parents, Wanda and Dunbar Lawhorn, started his basketball career when they placed him in the Doolittle Community Center basketball league at age five, and hes played and loved it ever since. Lawhorn graduated from Western High School in 1998 and acquired many sports awards along the way. Lawhorn started the varsity basketball team as a freshman and hasnit looked back since. During his four years of high school basketball, he was named to the team in both his junior and senior years. Also, during those two years, he was named ; his teams Most Valuable Player. He was also named to the ment team at the presti- 200-poun- All-Sta- per game, and had a total of 29 blocked shots. This season, Lawhorn has continued his dominating ways. Lawhoms has worked hard to improve his game, and his efforts are paying dividends. Lawhorn currently leads the Scenic West athletic Conference in several statistical categories: scoring (20.4 points per game), field goal percentage (68 percent), and blocked shots (1.29 per game). Lawhorn has been the premier post player in the SWAC this year. He also ranks in the top ten in the conference in rebounds per game (7.4). I have never had a player like Vance make a drastic jump in one year. He has shown me his desire to become an impact player this year. A terrific scorer in the post and the ability to defend his position will make him invaluable to our success this year, said head basketball coach Jeff Kidder. Vance is a great player and a very important part of our teams success this year, mentioned teammate Zach Batte. Lawhorn was also a e slam dunk champion for his high school. After high school, Lawhorn signed with San Jose State; however, his Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores were just ten points shy to qualify to play at the Division I level, so he had to con- sider other options, one which was Dixie. Dixie was one of the only junior colleges Ive ever heard of. Its close to my family, and Coach Kidder came out to my house in Vegas and talked to me about the Dixie tradition, and 1 was sold from there, said Lawhorn. Lawhorn is currently e on a basketball scholarship at Dixie for his second year in a row. Last season, Lawhorn was ranked sixth m the nation in field goal percentage.
