The once popular program has provided students with the cause opportunity for both Airframe and Power plant certification by the Federal Aviation Administration. Over the past twenty-tw- o is years, approximately two hundred students have successfully completed the Airframe 1 and Power plant program, finding employment opportunitnd ies with Skywest, Delta and United Airlines as well as for fal numerous smaller companies across the country. According to Hawley, the program is ending at a time when airframe and power plant mechanics are in high demand. In each of the last three years, he says, employers have called wanting to know the students names and would they please send resumes. Jaque Nielsen, a personnel employee at SkyWest says We can't get enough airframe and power plant mechanics. In addition to the existing shortage of qualified mechanics, Nielsen says Often times the applicants do not want to relocate to where the job openings are. Both Hawley and Hansen are disappointed in the decision to end the program. Hawley plans to retire at the end of spring semester while Hansen will continue teaching for the college, perhaps in Auto Technology. President Huddleston said that the existing needs of other departments would be considered in determining how to use the vacated space in the Jennings Building. M " Dont like what you read? ' the St George airport and many students had the opportunity to hire locally. In 1995, SkyWest relocated its maintainence department to the Salt Lake City airport. Charles Hawley, one of the program instructors, believes that since that time, community support for aviation has dwindled. Hawley, who teaches the airframe courses, is a graduate of the program himself. Formerly an Air Force Major and ROTC instructor, Hawley enrolled at Dixie College in 1984 and received his Airframe and Power plant license in 1985. He was hired by the college as an instructor in 1990. Lowell Hansen, assistant professor of the Airframe And Power plant Program, has been teaching at Dixie since 1972. He too has an Air Force background as a forand mer pilot instructor of jet aircraft, primarily flying 7 8 aircraft. Hansen says that the program has a restricted enrollment due in part to Federal Aviation Administration rules regarding class size. These restrictions and program costs, he says, are contributing reasons for ending the program. Dixie College President, Dr. Robert Huddleston confirms that high costs are one reason for discontinuing the program as well as a lack of community placement opportunity for those who complete the certification process. He mentioned that other schools in the state are experiencing T-3- Divided into two sections, the Airframe classes cover range of subject material including aviation microof computers, airframe structures and systems, aircraft a hydraulics and materials and processes.
