Show Page3 ampus November 24, 1998 Scholarships Awarded for Minority Achievements By Ashleigh Millgate ashleighinfowest. com The Utah Coalition For the Advancement of Minorities in Higher Education awarded two deserving candidates Dixie attending College $1000 scholarships last week. UCAMHE The scholarships are cash awards offered to students of color who meet resident status for tuition purposes. Students receive recognition for their academic vocational achievement, involvement and leadership in school, community, religious, political, or other service activities, personal goals and financial need. Each candidate was required SUU By to submit a scholarship application form along with a college transcript and two letters to Lina Judee, the director of the Multicultural center. The candidate must also have completed 24 semester of hours graded course work in order to eligible for the scholarship. ti. a Navajo Indian sophomore at Dixie College was one of the proud recipients. Bigman is majoring in psychology and planning on graduating at the end of the summer, in order to transfer to Southern Utah University. She is also the Filipe is planning to graduate Dixie College in May. He will then transfer to the University of Utah, in order to further his major in Social Science. He said he hopes to become a social worker of a probation officer. Filipe is the vice of the club, Polynesian and also volunteers his time, energy, and talents to help raise money for the Polynesian students scholarship fund. "I'm very thankful for this scholarship; it will help me out a lot in furthering my education at a major university." said Filipe. There is also a satellite student attending Southern Utah University through Dixie's cam president Rhoda Bigham, Native American Students Association. "Bigman has far more awards and accomplishments than any other student I've come in contact with at Dixie," said Judee. "She is well deserving of this scholarship." The second of the two students is Thomas Filipe, a Tongan sophomore at Dixie College. pus that was awarded the scholarship through SUU. a Delores Kahkonen, Six of Nations Cayuga (Iroquois) is a senior at SUU. She graduated from Dixie with her associates degree and has also graduated from SUU with her bachelors degree. She is now planning to graduate SUU from with her masters degree in May. She can be regularly found in the Career center where she is the job skills coordinator. "I'm very grateful and appreciate this scholarship; it will give me more of an opportunity to complete my masters." said Kahkonen. Hosts Advisement Session Laura Smith su nsun. current Miss Indian Dixie and the ICC representative for the dixie, edu If earning a four-yedegree is on your list of things to do, plan on attending the Gala and Advisement Session hosted by Southern Utah University held in the Gardner Student Center on Mon., ar Nov. 30. Transfer advisement sessions will be between 11 am to noon and from 1 to 2 pm. Between sessions, the Gala will begin with the talents of SUU's show choir, "Acclamation." SUU's "Ballroom Dance Company" and Annie Griffith, "Miss SUU," will also be featured. Asai Gilman, a 1994 alumni of SUU and the assistant director of school relations for Dixie College, will be the Mater of ' Ceremonies during the Gala. "It will be a unique opportunity to see SUU's campus without leaving St. George, and beneficial for those that take of said it," George advantage Fenstermacher, director of St. George Center for SUU. Representatives from each of SUU's academic colleges will be in attendance as well as general advisement, transfer evaluation, and and SUU NCAA athletic counselor. Those students who are in attendance will receive a free SUU catalog. According to Sandra J. Lord, director of school relations for SUU, no one should miss out on the opportunity to take advantage of free food, free entertainment, and free valuable information.
