According to Academic Max Rose, the best thing you can do is talk to a counselor now. Rose added that the two main things you must remember is to still take 16 credits, even if it means taking five classes, and not to stress, "the transition is going to be a piece of cake for students." Rose said they are going to do whatever it takes to make the transition easy for students. In no way, are the students going to be their the Penalized for going through the transition, he said. A web site has been estab-I'she- d to help Dixie College students with the transition. The website was developed by Joe Green, the address ls http.www.dixie eduadmis-Sonssemcon.htm- l. According to the web page, a quarter system breaks the academic year into three periods. A few additional days are needed after each period for final exams Under the new semester system, the academic year divided into two terms, which includes time at the end of the term final for a study day and a four-da- y exam period. To convert quarter hours to semester hours you must multiply the number of quarter hours by .667. If fractional credits result from the conversion, is your cumulative credit total will be rounded up to the next highest number. Rose, however, does not recommend trying to convert your credits yourself. He said that is what your counselors are there for. According to the web page, the primary benefit of the semester system is the courses are more comprehensive. The web site also states that longer terms allow professors to lay necessary groundwork before introducing principal subject matter. You register fewer times for classes and will go through fee payment lines and the financial aid process fewer times. Since most textbooks are designed for a semester system, you will purchase fewer books. Time lost starting and stopping terms on the quarter system becomes energy put into teaching and learning. Also, approximately 80 percent of all colleges and universities in America adhere to the semester calendar, according to the web page. Tuition will not increase when the conversion takes place. Since semesters are longer than quarters, students will pay more for each semester credit. However, there are fewer terms per year on a semester system than on a quarter system.
